Abstract

Methods and devices that prevent stasis in the LAA by either increasing the flow through the LAA or by closing off or sealing the LAA. Increasing the flow is accomplished through shunts, flow diverters, agitators, or by increasing the size of the ostium. Closing off the LAA is accomplished using seals or by cinching the LAA.

Claims (20)

. A method of preventing stasis in a left atrial appendage comprising creating a path for blood to flow from the pulmonary artery into the left atrial appendage.

. The method of claim 1 wherein creating a path for blood to flow from the pulmonary artery into the left atrial appendage comprises placing a shunt between the pulmonary artery and the left atrial appendage.

. The method of claim 2 further comprising filtering the blood flowing through the shunt.

. The method of claim 3 wherein filtering the blood flowing through the shunt comprises placing a filter within the shunt.

. The method of claim 3 wherein filtering the blood flowing through the shunt comprises placing a filter over an end of the shunt.

. The method of claim 1 wherein creating a path for blood to flow from the pulmonary artery into the left atrial appendage comprises angling the blood flow toward a sidewall of the left atrial appendage such that a vortex is created within the left atrial appendage.

. A method of preventing stasis in a left atrial appendage comprising creating a path for blood to flow from a left ventricle to the left atrial appendage through a mitral valve such that a vortex is created in the left atrial appendage.

. The method of claim 7 wherein creating a path for blood to flow from a sinus of the mitral valve of the left ventricle comprises implanting a shunt through tissue of the mitral valve such that one end of the shunt is located in the sinus of the mitral valve and the other end of the shunt is directed toward or located in the left atrial appendage.

. The method of claim 8 wherein angling the blood flow toward the sidewall of the left atrial appendage such that a vortex is created within the left atrial appendage comprises angling the end of the shunt that is directed toward or located in the left atrial appendage toward a sidewall of the left atrial appendage.

. The method of claim 8 further comprising anchoring a midpoint of the shunt to tissue of the mitral valve.

. The method of claim 10 further comprising tethering at least one end of the shunt to cardiac tissue.

. A method of increasing flow through a left atrial appendage comprising directing flow from a pulmonary vein into the left atrial appendage such that the flow washes out the left atrial appendage.

. The method of claim 12 wherein directing flow from the pulmonary vein into the left atrial appendage comprises placing a shunt in the pulmonary vein, upstream of a left lateral ridge, that leads into the left atrial appendage.

. The method of claim 13 further comprising causing blood to flow through the shunt.

. The method of claim 14 wherein causing blood to flow through the shunt comprises implanting a flow resistor in the pulmonary vein, downstream of the shunt, such that pressure builds in the pulmonary vein, which is relieved by blood flowing through the shunt into the left atrial appendage.

. The method of claim 12 wherein directing flow from the pulmonary vein into the left atrial appendage comprises angling the flow against a sidewall of the left atrial appendage such that a vortex is created within the left atrial appendage, thus ensuring that the flow washes out the left atrial appendage.

. The method of claim 12 wherein directing flow from the pulmonary vein into the left atrial appendage comprises diverting flow around the left lateral ridge and into a sidewall of the left atrial appendage such that a vortex is created within the left atrial appendage.

. The method of claim 17 wherein diverting flow around the left lateral ridge comprises placing a tubular device around the left lateral ridge such that an outflow end of the tubular device is directed at a sidewall of the left atrial appendage.

. The method of claim 18 further comprising anchoring the tubular device to the left lateral ridge.

. The method of claim 19 wherein anchoring the tubular device to the left lateral ridge comprises placing a clip around the left lateral ridge and attaching the tubular device to the clip.
