Abstract

Flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) enabling distributed controls is a requirement for power transmission and distribution, to improve line balancing and distribution efficiency. These FACTS devices are electronic circuits that vary in the type of services they provide. All FACTS devices have internal circuitry to handle fault currents. Most of these circuits are unique in design for each manufacturer, which make these FACTS devices non-modular, non-interchangeable, expensive and heavy. One of the most versatile FACTS device is the static synchronous series compensator (SSSC), which is used to inject impedance into the transmission lines to change the power flow characteristics. The addition of integrated fault current handling circuitry makes the SSSC and similar FACTS devices unwieldy, heavy, and not a viable solution for distributed control. What is disclosed are modifications to FACTS devices that move the fault current protection external to the FACTS device and make them modular and re-usable.

Claims (42)

1 . A system of providing power flow control with fault current protection for a power grid, the system comprising:

a plurality of groups of modular flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) devices, each group of modular FACTS devices without fault current protection, wherein each modular FACTS device of each group of modular FACTS devices is to be coupled in series with a power transmission line of the power grid to provide control of power flow on the power transmission line; and

a plurality of modular fault current protection devices configured to provide fault current protection to the plurality of groups of modular FACTS devices, wherein each of the plurality of modular fault current protection devices is in parallel with a respective group of the plurality of groups of modular FACTS devices;

wherein the system is in a modular arrangement and is to be coupled to the power transmission line with the plurality of groups of FACTS devices in series.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of modular FACTS devices without fault current protection comprises a synchronous series compensator (SSSC) without fault current protection.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of modular FACTS devices without fault current protection comprises a thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC) without fault current protection.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the modular fault current protection device comprises:

a metal oxide varistor (MOV).

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the modular fault current protection device comprises:

a triggered gap.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the modular fault current protection device comprises:

a bypass breaker.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the modular fault current protection device comprises:

an inductor in series with a triggered gap.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the modular fault current protection device comprises:

a recloser switch.

9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the modular fault current protection device comprises:

a parallel-connected triggered gap and bypass breaker; and

an inductor in series with the parallel-connected triggered gap and bypass breaker.

10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the modular fault current protection device comprises:

a triggered gap in parallel with a bypass breaker;

an inductor in series with the paralleled triggered gap and bypass breaker; and

a metal oxide varistor (MOV) in parallel with a recloser switch, wherein the MOV in parallel with the recloser switch are parallel to the inductor in series with the paralleled triggered gap and bypass breaker.

11 . A method of power flow control with fault current protection for a power grid, the method comprising:

providing a modular arrangement system comprising:

a plurality of groups of modular flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) devices, each group of modular FACTS devices without fault current protection, wherein each modular FACTS device of each group of modular FACTS devices is to be coupled in series with a power transmission line of the power grid to provide control of power flow on the power transmission line; and

a plurality of modular fault current protection devices configured to provide fault current protection to the plurality of groups of modular FACTS devices;

wherein the plurality of groups of modular FACTS devices are in series with the power transmission line, and each of the plurality of modular fault current protection devices is in parallel with a respective group of the plurality of groups of modular FACTS devices.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one modular FACTS device without fault current protection comprises a synchronous series compensator (SSSC) without fault current protection.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein at least modular FACTS device without fault current protection comprises a thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC) without fault current protection.

14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the modular fault current protection device comprises a metal oxide varistor (MOV).

15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the modular fault current protection device comprises a triggered gap.

16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the modular fault current protection device comprises a bypass breaker.

17 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the modular fault current protection device comprises an inductor in series with a triggered gap.

18 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the modular fault current protection device comprises a recloser switch.

19 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the modular fault current protection device comprises:

a parallel-connected triggered gap and bypass breaker; and

an inductor in series with the parallel-connected triggered gap and bypass breaker.

20 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the modular fault current protection device comprises:

a triggered gap in parallel with a bypass breaker;

an inductor in series with the paralleled triggered gap and bypass breaker; and

a metal oxide varistor (MOV) in parallel with a recloser switch, with the MOV in parallel with the recloser switch being in parallel to the inductor in series with the paralleled triggered gap and bypass breaker.
