NEUROMODULATION FOR METABOLIC CONDITIONS OR SYNDROMES
According to some embodiments, a method of treating a subject having diabetes or symptoms associated with diabetes is provided. The method includes delivering a neuromodulation catheter within a vessel (e.g., hepatic artery) having surrounding nerves that innervate the liver (e.g., sympathetic nerves of the hepatic plexus). The method may also include modulating (e.g., disrupting, ablating, stimulating) the nerves by mechanical compression, energy delivery, or fluid delivery.

3 . A method of treating a subject having hypertension, the method comprising:
inserting an ultrasound catheter into vasculature of a subject, wherein the ultrasound catheter comprises a distal portion comprising at least one ultrasound transducer;
intravascularly positioning the at least one ultrasound transducer of the ultrasound catheter within a portion of a hepatic artery of the vasculature; and
delivering ultrasonic energy via the at least one ultrasound transducer to a wall of the hepatic artery sufficient to denervate one or more nerves surrounding the hepatic artery to treat hypertension,
wherein the distal portion of the ultrasound catheter is configured to contact the wall of the hepatic artery while the ultrasonic energy is being delivered.
4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the one or more nerves comprise sympathetic nerves of the hepatic plexus.
5 . The method of claim 3 , wherein a contact pressure of 0.1 g/mm 2 to 100 g/mm 2 is exerted on the wall by the distal portion of the ultrasound catheter.
6 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the ultrasonic energy delivered by the at least one ultrasound transducer to the wall is in a range of 100 J to 1 kJ.
7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the ultrasonic energy is delivered by the at least one ultrasound transducer for about 5 seconds to about 120 seconds.
8 . The method of claim 3 , further comprising at least partially occluding flow within a common hepatic artery.
9 . The method of claim 3 , wherein delivering ultrasonic energy via the at least one ultrasound transducer comprises delivery ultrasonic energy at an average ultrasound intensity of about 1 W/cm 2 to about 10 kW/cm 2 .
10 . The method of claim 3 , wherein inserting the ultrasound catheter into vasculature of the subject comprises accessing the vasculature of the subject via a femoral access point or a radial access point.
11 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the ultrasound catheter further comprises a liquid filled balloon.
12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising circulating a coolant through the liquid filled balloon.
13 . The method of claim 3 , wherein delivering ultrasonic energy via the at least one ultrasound transducer to the wall of the hepatic artery comprises causing ultrasound energy to be preferentially delivered by the at least one ultrasound transducer to sympathetic nerves surrounding the hepatic artery.
14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein causing ultrasound energy to be preferentially delivered by the at least ultrasound transducer to sympathetic nerves surrounding the hepatic artery comprises causing the at least one ultrasound transducer to deliver ultrasound energy to a proximal portion of the hepatic artery.
15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the proximal portion of the hepatic artery comprises a common hepatic artery.
16 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the hepatic artery comprises at least one of a common hepatic artery, a proper hepatic artery, a right hepatic artery, or a left hepatic artery.
17 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the hepatic artery comprises a common hepatic artery.
18 . A method of treating a subject having hypertension, the method comprising:
intravascularly delivering a distal portion of an ultrasound catheter to a vicinity of a liver of a subject;
disrupting neural communication along a sympathetic nerve fiber by causing ultrasonic energy to be emitted from at least one ultrasound transducer positioned on the distal portion of the ultrasound catheter to treat hypertension; and
removing the RF energy delivery catheter from the subject.
19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the ultrasound catheter is delivered intravascularly through a femoral or radial artery to a location within a common hepatic artery.
20 . The method of claim 18 , wherein intravascularly delivering the distal portion of the ultrasound catheter to the vicinity of the liver of the subject comprises positioning the at least one ultrasound transducer of the ultrasound catheter within a portion of a common hepatic artery.
21 . The method of claim 18 , wherein disrupting neural communication along the sympathetic nerve fiber comprises permanent termination of nerve conduction along the sympathetic nerve fiber.
22 . The method of claim 18 , wherein disrupting neural communication along the sympathetic nerve fiber comprises temporarily slowing or terminating nerve conduction along the sympathetic nerve fiber.
23 . The method of claim 18 , wherein disrupting neural communication along the sympathetic nerve fiber comprises disrupting neural communication along a plurality of sympathetic nerve fibers of the hepatic plexus simultaneously.
