Abstract

A surgical handpiece assembly for operating a bit having resilient arms to engage the handpiece assembly. The handpiece assembly includes a housing assembly. A drive cannula is coupled to the housing assembly and receives torque from a motor. The drive cannula extends along an axis. The drive cannula has an internal surface defining a bore that extends along the axis. The bore receives the bit. The internal surface has a driving portion to transmit torque to the bit. A retention surface near an end of the drive cannula assists the resilient arms of the bit to retain a position of the bit relative to the drive cannula. A release assembly proximal the drive cannula includes a release member moveable relative to the retention surface to disengage the resilient arms from engagement with the retention surface to permit the bit to move relative to the drive cannula.

Claims (28)

1. A surgical handpiece assembly for operating a drill bit having one or more resilient arms to engage the surgical handpiece, the surgical handpiece assembly comprising:

a housing assembly comprising a proximal region and a distal region;

a drive cannula rotatably coupled to the housing assembly and configured to receive torque from and rotate in response to a motor, the drive cannula extending along a longitudinal axis between a proximal end and a distal end, and the drive cannula comprising an internal surface defining a bore that extends along the longitudinal axis, with the bore being configured to receive the drill bit, and with the internal surface comprising a driving portion adjacent the proximal end configured to transmit torque to the drill bit;

a retention surface adjacent the proximal end of the drive cannula configured to assist the one or more resilient arms of the drill bit to retain an axial position of the drill bit relative to the drive cannula; and

a release assembly proximal the proximal end of the drive cannula, the release assembly comprising a release member moveable relative to the retention surface to a first position and a second position, the release member configured to operatively disengage the one or more resilient arms of the drill bit from engagement with the retention surface to permit the drill bit to move axially relative to the drive cannula in response to the release member moving from the first position to the second position.

2. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 1 , wherein the retention surface tapers away from the longitudinal axis from proximally to distally.

3. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 1 , wherein the release member moves along the longitudinal axis to the first position and the second position, with the release member being spaced from the retention surface at a first distance in the first position and the release member being spaced from the retention surface at a second distance less than the first distance in the second position.

4. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 3 , wherein the release assembly further comprises a biasing mechanism configured to bias the release member toward the first position.

5. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 3 , wherein the release member comprises a release surface configured to abut the one or more resilient arms of the drill bit to disengage the one or more resilient arms from the retention surface in the second position.

6. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 5 , wherein the release surface tapers away from the longitudinal axis proximally to distally.

7. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 5 , wherein the release surface is an annular surface configured to abut a plurality of resilient arms to disengage the plurality of resilient arms from the retention surface.

8. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 3 , wherein the release assembly further includes a collar configured to rotate about the longitudinal axis to move the release member along the longitudinal axis to the first and second positions.

9. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 8 , wherein the collar comprises an internal surface facing the longitudinal axis and defining a channel that extends parallel to the longitudinal axis, and wherein the release assembly further includes a guide element configured to move at least partially within the channel and the guide element configured to move at least partially within a helical slot formed by the housing assembly, and wherein the release member defines a recess for receiving the guide element and capturing the guide element within the helical slot and channel, and wherein the collar is configured to rotate the guide element about the longitudinal axis and move the guide element at least partially within the helical slot and channel to move the release member along the longitudinal axis to the first position and the second position.

10. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 1 , wherein the drive cannula comprises the retention surface on a proximal face of the drive cannula adjacent the proximal end of the drive cannula.

11. A surgical handpiece assembly for operating a drill bit having one or more resilient arms to engage the surgical handpiece, the surgical handpiece assembly comprising:

a housing assembly comprising a proximal region and a distal region;

a drive element rotatably coupled to the housing assembly and configured to receive torque from and rotate in response to a motor, the drive element extending along a longitudinal axis and comprising a driving portion configured to transmit torque to the drill bit;

a retention surface adjacent the proximal end of the drive element configured to assist the one or more resilient arms of the drill bit to retain an axial position of the drill bit relative to the drive element; and

a release assembly proximal the proximal end of the drive element, the release assembly comprising a release member moveable relative to the retention surface to a first position and a second position, the release member configured to operatively disengage the one or more resilient arms of the drill bit from engagement with the retention surface to permit the drill bit to move axially relative to the drive element in response to the release member moving from the first position to the second position.

12. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 11 , wherein the retention surface tapers away from the longitudinal axis from proximally to distally.

13. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 11 , wherein the release member moves along the longitudinal axis to the first position and the second position, with the release member being spaced from the retention surface at a first distance in the first position and the release member being spaced from the retention surface at a second distance less than the first distance in the second position.

14. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 13 , wherein the release assembly further comprises a biasing mechanism configured to bias the release member toward the first position.

15. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 13 , wherein the release member comprises a release surface configured to abut the one or more resilient arms of the drill bit to disengage the one or more resilient arms from the retention surface in the second position.

16. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 15 , wherein the release surface tapers away from the longitudinal axis proximally to distally.

17. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 15 , wherein the release surface is an annular surface configured to abut a plurality of resilient arms to disengage the plurality of resilient arms from the retention surface.

18. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 13 , wherein the release assembly further includes a collar configured to rotate about the longitudinal axis to move the release member along the longitudinal axis to the first and second positions.

19. The surgical handpiece assembly of claim 18 , wherein the collar comprises an internal surface facing the longitudinal axis and defining a channel that extends parallel to the longitudinal axis, and wherein the release assembly further includes a guide element configured to move at least partially within the channel and the guide element configured to move at least partially within a helical slot formed by the housing assembly, and wherein the release member defines a recess for receiving the guide element and capturing the guide element within the helical slot and channel, and wherein the collar is configured to rotate the guide element about the longitudinal axis and move the guide element at least partially within the helical slot and channel to move the release member along the longitudinal axis to the first position and the second position.
