Abstract

A custom-tint paint production system that includes a color sensing device such as a low-resolution spectrophotometer to measure color of a preexisting surface color, a color data translation engine to convert the measured values to spectral curve values, and a tint formulation engine to determine a custom tint formulation based upon the spectral curve values, which is usable by a tinter to tint a base coating composition by adding one or more colorants in amounts based on color measurements from the color sensing device.

21 . A method for tinting a base coating according to a custom-tint formula, the method comprising:

adding one or more colorants from an array of colorants to a base coating composition to generate a tinted coating,

wherein an amount of each colorant is based on high resolution spectral curve data derived from wideband spectral data of a sensed surface,

wherein the amounts of one or more colorants is not pre-determined.

22 . The method of claim 21 ,

wherein the high resolution spectral curve data is derived from wideband spectral data of a sensed surface by interpolating the wideband spectral data.

23 . The method of claim 22 :

wherein the wideband spectral data is obtained by a portable device.

24 . The method of claim 22 :

wherein the high resolution spectral data is communicated to a tinter using a mobile software application.

25 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the high resolution spectral curve data has 16 points or 31 points.

26 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the high resolution spectral curve data ranges from about 450 nm to about 650 nm.

27 . The method of claim 21 ,

wherein the amount of each colorant is further based on base product attributes for each colorant in the array of colorants.

28 . The method of claim 21 ,

wherein the amount of each colorant is further based on information about existing palette colors.

29 . The method of claim 21 ,

wherein the custom tint formula is based on a tint formula for a closest match to an existing palette color.

30 . The method of claim 21 ,

wherein the array of colorants includes at least white, red, green, blue, and yellow, and black.

31 . The method of claim 21 ,

wherein the base coating composition is a paint.

32 . Computer-implemented code for tinting a base coating according to a custom-tint formula, the code including instructions for performing the steps of:

adding one or more colorants from an array of colorants to a base coating composition to generate a tinted coating,

wherein an amount of each colorant is based on high resolution spectral curve data derived from wideband spectral data of a sensed surface,

wherein the amounts of one or more colorants is not pre-determined.

33 . The computer-implemented code of claim 32 ,

wherein the high resolution spectral curve data is derived from wideband spectral data of a sensed surface by interpolating the wideband spectral data.

34 . The computer-implemented code of claim 32 :

wherein the wideband spectral data is obtained by a portable device.

35 . The computer-implemented code of claim 32 :

wherein the high resolution spectral data is communicated to a tinter using a mobile software application.

36 . The computer-implemented code of claim 32 ,

wherein the high resolution spectral curve data has 16 points or 31 points.

37 . The computer-implemented code of claim 32 ,

wherein the high resolution spectral curve data ranges from about 450 nm to about 650 nm.

wherein the amount of each colorant is further based on base product attributes for each colorant in the array of colorants

wherein the amount of each colorant is further based on information about existing palette colors.
