Abstract

An augment device includes a hollow sleeve surrounding a channel extending through the hollow sleeve from a top to a bottom of the hollow sleeve, the hollow sleeve comprising a wall having an inner face and an outer face. The hollow sleeve includes at least one bending joint, the bending joint being configured for compressing the channel. Thereby the hollow sleeve may be compressed under an external force, leading to a decreased circumference and width of the hollow sleeve. This leads to a gap between the perimeter of the augment device and surrounding bone material, breaking any connections. By virtue of this, a much facilitated removal of the augment device can be achieved. Further, an extraction tool includes grippers for engaging and compressing the augment device, and further instruments, particularly a jig, for achieving an effective removal.

Claims (40)

1 . An augment device for a joint endoprosthesis comprising:

a hollow sleeve surrounding a channel extending through the hollow sleeve from a top to a bottom of the hollow sleeve, the hollow sleeve comprising a wall having an inner face, and an outer face,

wherein the hollow sleeve comprises receptacles configured for engagement with a handling tool, wherein the receptacles are configured as recesses in the outer face for a form-fit of the handling tool, wherein the top of the hollow sleeve includes alignment holes that are configured for positioning of a jig, and the top of the hollow sleeve includes checking marks in a fixed spatial relation to the alignment holes, wherein the checking marks are configured to indicate proper positioning of the jig,

wherein the wall is at least partially comprised of porous material configured for promoting bone ingrowth,

wherein the hollow sleeve comprises a compensator element configured for adjusting a circumference of the hollow sleeve.

2 . The augment device of claim 1 , further comprising at least two bending joints configured for compression of the channel.

3 . The augment device of claim 2 , wherein the at least two bending joints are formed by integral hinges.

4 . The augment device of claim 3 , wherein the integral hinge each comprise an elongated void in the hollow sleeve and a strip of solid material spanning the void.

5 . The augment device of claim 4 , wherein the strip is oriented such as to be oblique with respect to the wall.

6 . The augment device of claim 1 , wherein the receptacles are configured as porous portions.

7 . The augment device of claim 1 , wherein the receptacles comprise four receptacles, two receptacles on a front side of the augment device at a front left portion and a front right portion and two receptacles on a back side of the augment device at a back left portion and a back right portion.

8 . The augment device of claim 1 , wherein the wall is a sandwich structure having a solid portion and a porous portion, the porous portion forming the outer face and being formed of porous material which is configured for ingrowth of bony material.

9 . The augment device of claim 1 , wherein the augment device is a tibial augment for a knee joint endoprosthesis.

10 . The augment device of claim 1 , wherein the compensator element is configured as two overlapping tongues arranged in a sliding relationship.

11 . The augment device of claim 1 , wherein the receptacles include an undercut in the outer face, and wherein the receptacles are in the vicinity of the top of the hollow sleeve and are offset a height away from the top of the hollow sleeve.

12 . The augment device of claim 1 , wherein the alignment holes are conical in shape.

13 . A system comprising:

an augment device for a joint endoprosthesis comprising:

a hollow sleeve surrounding a channel extending through the hollow sleeve from a top to a bottom of the hollow sleeve, the hollow sleeve comprising a wall having an inner face, and an outer face,

wherein the hollow sleeve comprises receptacles configured for engagement with a handling tool,

wherein the wall is at least partially comprised of porous material configured for promoting bone ingrowth,

wherein the hollow sleeve comprises a compensator element configured for adjusting a circumference of the hollow sleeve;

an extraction tool comprising a substantially flat frame having a center portion and a periphery portion, a plurality of grippers distributedly arranged at the periphery portion, and configured for engaging the augment device, at least one of the grippers being movable inward towards the center portion, and a compression element for actuating the at least one movable gripper; and

a jig, the jig being substantially planar and having an upper side for attachment of the extraction tool and having a lower side as an abutment surface for a top of the augment device, wherein the jig includes a plurality of guiding holes for drilling, the guiding holes being positioned such as to coincide with the grippers of the extraction tool.

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the jig includes alignment pins projecting from the lower side and spaced and shaped such as to provide a positive locking in alignment holes of the augment device.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the alignment holes are configured to center the alignment pins.

16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the alignment holes have a conical sidewall for centering the alignment pins.

17 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the jig has a central opening having a contour that matches the contour of the channel formed by the augment device.

18 . A method of handling the augment device of claim 1 and an extraction tool having grippers that can be actuated for performing a compressing action, the method comprising:

placing the extraction tool at a top of the augment device that is in an implanted position,

engaging the augment device with grippers of the extraction tool,

compressing the augment device by actuation of the extraction tool in order to break the augment device free, and

removing the compressed augment device by pulling it in a direction substantially perpendicular to a direction of the compressing.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the extraction tool includes a substantially flat frame having a center portion and a periphery portion, the frame defining a plane, the grippers are distributedly arranged at the periphery portion and configured for engaging the augment device, and at least one of the grippers is movable along the plane of the frame inward towards the center portion of the frame, and a compression element for actuating the at least one movable gripper.

20 . An augment device for a joint endoprosthesis comprising:

a hollow sleeve surrounding a channel extending through the hollow sleeve from a top to a bottom of the hollow sleeve, the hollow sleeve comprising a wall having an inner face, and an outer face, wherein the top of the hollow sleeve includes alignment holes that are configured for positioning of a jig; and

at least two bending joints configured for compression of the channel, wherein the at least two bending joints are formed by integral hinges, wherein the integral hinge each comprise an elongated void in the hollow sleeve and a strip of solid material spanning the void, and wherein the elongated void of each integral hinge is in a portion of each alignment hole,

wherein the hollow sleeve comprises receptacles configured for engagement with a handling tool, wherein the receptacles are configured as recesses in the outer face for a form-fit of the handling tool,

wherein the wall is at least partially comprised of porous material configured for promoting bone ingrowth,

wherein the hollow sleeve comprises a compensator element configured for adjusting a circumference of the hollow sleeve.
