Abstract

Intraluminal devices and methods for removing an obstruction from a blood vessel using an intraluminal device are provided. The intraluminal device can include a flexible shaft and an expandable wire mesh structure extending from the flexible shaft, the wire mesh structure including at least one first expandable section having a first wire arrangement pattern and at least one second expandable section having a second wire arrangement pattern different from the first wire arrangement pattern. In addition, interstices in the at least one first expandable section can differ in size from interstices in the at least one second expandable section.

Claims (26)

1. An intraluminal device, comprising:

a flexible shaft;

an expandable wire mesh structure extending from the flexible shaft, the expandable wire mesh structure including wires comprising a 1×2 braiding arrangement; and

a control wire extending through the flexible shaft and the expandable wire mesh structure, wherein the expandable wire mesh structure is configured to expand when a force is exerted on the control wire;

wherein at least a portion of the expandable wire mesh structure comprises alternating braided wires and intertwined wires.

2. The intraluminal device of claim 1 , wherein the wires of the expandable wire mesh structure form intertwined wire couples between braided wires of the 1×2 braiding arrangement.

3. The intraluminal device of claim 1 , wherein the intertwined wires create large interstices in the expandable wire mesh structure, enabling clot penetration of the expandable wire mesh structure.

4. The intraluminal device of claim 1 , wherein the flexible shaft includes multiple strands of continuous wire that are coiled, and wherein the expandable wire mesh structure is formed from at least some of the multiple strands.

5. The intraluminal device of claim 4 , wherein the multiple strands include wires having differing cross-sectional shapes.

6. The intraluminal device of claim 4 , wherein the multiple strands include wires of differing material.

7. The intraluminal device of claim 6 , wherein the multiple strands include at least one wire having a radio-opacity that differs from another radio-opacity of at least one other wire.

8. The intraluminal device of claim 1 , wherein the expandable wire mesh structure comprises at least one first expandable section having a first wire arrangement pattern and at least one second expandable section having a second wire arrangement pattern different from the first wire arrangement pattern, wherein the first wire arrangement pattern comprises the 1×2 braiding arrangement.

9. The intraluminal device of claim 8 , wherein interstices in the at least one first expandable section differ in size from interstices in the at least one second expandable section.

10. An intraluminal device, comprising:

a flexible shaft;

an expandable wire mesh structure extending from the flexible shaft, the expandable wire mesh structure including wires comprising a 1×2 braiding arrangement; and

a control wire extending through the flexible shaft and the expandable wire mesh structure, wherein the expandable wire mesh structure is configured to expand when a force is exerted on the control wire;

wherein the wires of the expandable wire mesh structure form intertwined wire couples between braided wires of the 1×2 braiding arrangement.

11. The intraluminal device of claim 10 , wherein at least a portion of the expandable wire mesh structure comprises alternating braided wires and intertwined wires.

12. The intraluminal device of claim 11 , wherein the intertwined wires create large interstices in the expandable wire mesh structure, enabling clot penetration of the expandable wire mesh structure.

13. The intraluminal device of claim 10 , wherein the flexible shaft includes multiple strands of continuous wire that are coiled, and wherein the expandable wire mesh structure is formed from at least some of the multiple strands.

14. The intraluminal device of claim 13 , wherein the multiple strands include wires having differing cross-sectional shapes.

15. The intraluminal device of claim 13 , wherein the multiple strands include wires of differing material.

16. The intraluminal device of claim 15 , wherein the multiple strands include at least one wire having a radio-opacity that differs from another radio-opacity of at least one other wire.

17. The intraluminal device of claim 10 , wherein the expandable wire mesh structure comprises at least one first expandable section having a first wire arrangement pattern and at least one second expandable section having a second wire arrangement pattern different from the first wire arrangement pattern, wherein the first wire arrangement pattern comprises the 1×2 braiding arrangement.

18. The intraluminal device of claim 17 , wherein interstices in the at least one first expandable section differ in size from interstices in the at least one second expandable section.
