Abstract

An impact attenuating helmet including an outer liner having an inner mating surface, an inner liner positioned under the outer liner and having an outer mating surface configured to be received by the inner mating surface of the outer liner, the inner liner and the outer liner being configured to move relative to each other along a slip plane between outer mating surface of the inner liner and the inner mating surface of the outer liner, and one or more securing attachments, each securing attachment being coupled to the outer liner and being configured to secure the outer liner to the inner liner, each securing attachment comprising a slack element configured to permit a range of movement between the outer liner and the inner liner.

Claims (35)

1. A helmet comprising:

an outer liner having an inner mating surface;

an inner liner having an outer mating surface configured to be received by the inner mating surface of the outer liner and an inner surface configured to receive a head of a user of the helmet, the inner liner and the outer liner configured to move relative to each other; and

one or more securing attachments, each securing attachment being coupled to the outer liner and the inner liner and configured to secure the outer liner to the inner liner, each securing attachment comprising a slack element configured to extend from the outer liner to the inner liner through a slip plane, each slack element comprising a cord having a predetermined length configured to permit a range of rotational movement between the outer liner and the inner liner.

2. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the outer liner comprises an exterior surface being an exterior of the helmet.

3. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein each slack element is configured to extend at least partially through the inner liner.

4. The helmet of claim 2 , wherein each slack element comprises an unextended state and a fully extended state and is configured to move between the unextended state and the fully extended state to permit a range of rotational movement between the outer liner and the inner liner.

5. The helmet of claim 4 , wherein the cord extending to the predetermined length corresponds to the fully extended state, and

wherein the cord extending to less than the predetermined length of cord such that the cord comprises a slack corresponds to the unextended state.

6. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the inner liner and the outer liner are configured to move relative to each other along a slip plane between the outer mating surface of the inner liner and the inner mating surface of the outer liner, and

wherein the slip plane is configured to form a direct interface between the outer mating surface of the inner liner and the inner mating surface of the outer liner.

7. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the outer liner or the inner liner comprise a cavity configured to store at least a portion of each securing attachment.

8. A helmet comprising:

an outer liner;

an inner liner configured to be received by the outer liner and separated from the outer liner by a slip plane; and

one or more securing attachments, each securing attachment being coupled to the outer liner and the inner liner and configured to secure the outer liner to the inner liner such that the inner liner and the outer liner are configured to move relative to the slip plane, each securing attachment comprising a length of cord configured to extend from the outer liner to the inner liner and through the slip plane.

9. The helmet of claim 8 , wherein the slip plane is configured to form a direct interface between the inner liner and the outer liner.

10. The helmet of claim 8 , wherein each securing attachment comprises a slack element comprising the cord,

wherein the cord comprises a predetermined length,

wherein the slack element comprises an unextended state and a fully extended state, the slack element configured to move between the unextended state and the fully extended state to permit the range of rotational movement between the outer liner and the inner liner,

wherein the cord extending to the predetermined length corresponds to the fully extended state, and

wherein the cord extending to less than the predetermined length of cord such that the cord comprises a slack corresponds to the unextended state.

11. The helmet of claim 10 , wherein each of the one or more securing attachments comprises a leash anchor coupled to the outer liner and to the inner liner, the cord extending between two ends of the leash anchor.

12. The helmet of claim 11 , wherein the leash anchor is molded into one or more of the outer liner or the inner liner.

13. The helmet of claim 8 , wherein one or more of the outer liner or the inner liner comprise a cavity configured to store at least a portion of each securing attachment.

14. The helmet of claim 13 , wherein each securing attachment comprises a cord, at least a portion of each cord stored in the cavity.

15. The helmet of claim 9 , wherein the one or more securing attachments comprise a webbing coupled to the outer liner and extending through a void passage in the inner liner.

16. A helmet comprising:

an outer liner;

an inner liner configured to be received by the outer liner, one or more of the inner liner or the outer liner comprising a cavity; and

one or more securing attachments, each securing attachment being coupled to the outer liner and the inner liner and configured to secure the outer liner to the inner liner, each securing attachment configured to permit a range of movement between the outer liner and the inner liner, each securing attachment comprising a slack element configured to extend from the outer liner to the inner liner, and at least a portion of each securing attachment being stored in the cavity.

The helmet of claim 16 , wherein the slack element comprises an unextended state and a fully extended state, the slack element being configured to move between the unextended state and the fully extended state to permit a range of rotational movement between the outer liner and the inner liner.

18. The helmet of claim 17 , wherein the slack element is configured to limit the range of rotational movement of the outer liner with respect to the inner liner to between 10-15 millimeters, inclusive.

19. The helmet of claim 16 , wherein the inner liner and the outer liner are configured to move relative to each other along a slip plane forming a direct interface between the inner liner and the outer liner.

20. The helmet of claim 16 , wherein each securing attachment comprises a cord, at least a portion of each cord stored in the cavity.
