Abstract

A mask system may deliver a supply of air generated by a flow generator at a positive pressure in a therapeutic range to a patient's airways to treat sleep disordered breathing. The mask system may include: a cushion, a mask frame attached to the cushion, the mask frame having a front surface opposite the cushion and a bore projecting from the front surface to form a hole, and the mask frame having a curved interfacing structure projecting radially from the bore, and said mask frame having no built-in or integral headgear attachment points, headgear, an elbow assembly, and a headgear connector detachably connected to the mask frame by translating the mask frame and the headgear connector towards one another, wherein the mask frame and the headgear connector are constructed to resist movement between the mask frame and the headgear connector when said mask frame and said headgear connector are attached.

Claims (99)

1. A mask system for delivering a supply of air generated by a flow generator at a positive pressure in a therapeutic range to a patient's airways to treat sleep disordered breathing, the mask system comprising:

a cushion configured to seal with the patient's face in use;

a mask frame attached to the cushion, the mask frame being constructed from a first substantially rigid, non-malleable plastic material, the mask frame having a front surface opposite the cushion and a bore projecting from the front surface to form a hole, and the mask frame having a curved interfacing structure projecting radially from the bore, and said mask frame having no built-in or integral headgear attachment points;

headgear comprising:

a rear portion configured to engage the occiput of the patient's head in use;

a pair of upper side straps extending from the rear portion, each of the upper side straps being configured to pass above a corresponding one of the patient's ears in use;

a pair of lower side straps extending from the rear portion, each of the lower side straps being configured to pass below a corresponding one of the patient's ears in use; and

a pair of lower headgear clips configured to receive respective ones of the pair of lower side straps;

an elbow assembly configured to be connected to an air delivery tube to deliver the supply of air to the patient's airways; and

a headgear connector detachably connected to the mask frame by translating the mask frame and the headgear connector towards one another along the common axis until a snap-fit connection is established between the headgear connector and the curved interfacing structure of the mask frame, the headgear connector including a pair of lower headgear clip anchors configured to be engaged with respective ones of the lower headgear clips to attach respective ones of the lower side straps, and the headgear connector being constructed from a second substantially rigid, non-malleable plastic material,

wherein the mask frame and the headgear connector are constructed to resist movement between the mask frame and the headgear connector when said mask frame and said headgear connector are attached.

2. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the headgear connector does not include a forehead support.

3. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the mask frame and the cushion are configured to deliver the supply of air to the patient's nose and mouth.

4. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the cushion and the mask frame are permanently attached.

5. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the mask system further comprises a vent for gas washout.

6. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the headgear connector is shaped to conform to a portion of the mask frame.

7. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the headgear connector and the mask frame are non-malleable.

8. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein:

the mask frame and the cushion are configured to deliver the supply of air to the patient's nose and mouth,

the cushion and the mask frame are permanently attached,

the mask system further comprises a vent for gas washout,

at least a portion of the headgear connector is shaped to conform to a portion of the mask frame, and

the headgear connector and the mask frame are non-malleable.

9. A mask system for delivering a supply of air generated by a flow generator at a positive pressure in a therapeutic range of 2-30 cm H 2 O to a patient's airways to treat sleep disordered breathing, the mask system comprising:

a mask frame having a bore and a curved interfacing structure, the bore being structured to convey the supply of air to the patient's airways in use, the curved interfacing structure projecting from the bore in a radial direction, and the mask frame having no built-in or integral headgear attachment points;

a cushion provided to the mask frame and configured to seal with the patient's face in use;

headgear comprising:

a rear portion configured to engage the occiput of the patient's head in use;

a pair of upper side straps extending from the rear portion, each of the upper side straps being configured to pass above a corresponding one of the patient's ears in use;

a pair of lower side straps extending from the rear portion, each of the lower side straps being configured to pass below a corresponding one of the patient's ears in use; and

a pair of lower headgear clips configured to receive respective ones of the pair of lower side straps;

an elbow assembly configured to be connected to an air delivery tube to deliver the supply of air to the patient's airways; and

a headgear connector configured to engage the curved interfacing structure with a snap-fit, the headgear connector having an opening with a closed shape, the headgear connector including a pair of lower headgear clip anchors configured to engage with respective ones of the pair of lower headgear clips to attach respective ones of the pair of lower side straps, and the headgear connector including a pair of openings configured to attach to respective ones of the pair of upper side straps,

wherein the mask frame and the headgear connector are constructed to resist movement between the mask frame and the headgear connector when the mask frame and the headgear connector are attached, and

wherein the mask frame is more rigid than the cushion.

10. The mask system according to claim 9 , wherein:

the bore has a cylindrical shape structured to convey the supply of air to the patient's airways in use,

the curved interfacing structure is ring-shaped, and

the opening of the headgear connector has a circular shape.

11. The mask system according to claim 9 , wherein the headgear connector does not include a forehead support.

12. The mask system according to claim 9 , wherein the mask frame and the cushion are configured to deliver the supply of air to the patient's nose and mouth.

13. The mask system according to claim 9 , wherein the cushion and the mask frame are permanently attached.

14. The mask system according to claim 9 , wherein the mask system further comprises a vent for gas washout.

15. The mask system according to claim 9 , wherein at least a portion of the headgear connector is shaped to conform to a portion of the mask frame.

16. The mask system according to claim 9 , wherein the headgear connector is removably attachable to the mask frame.

17. The mask system according to claim 9 , wherein the headgear connector and the mask frame are non-malleable.

18. The mask system according to claim 9 , wherein:

the mask frame and the cushion are configured to deliver the supply of air to the patient's nose and mouth,

the cushion and the mask frame are permanently attached,

the mask system further comprises a vent for gas washout,

at least a portion of the headgear connector is shaped to conform to a portion of the mask frame,

the headgear connector is removably attachable to the mask frame, and

the headgear connector and the mask frame are non-malleable.

19. A mask system for delivering a supply of air generated by a flow generator at a positive pressure in a therapeutic range of 2-30 cm H 2 O to a patient's airways to treat sleep disordered breathing, the mask system comprising:

a mask frame having a bore and a curved interfacing structure, the curved interfacing structure projecting radially from the bore, the mask frame having no built-in or integral headgear attachment points;

a cushion provided to the mask frame and configured to seal with the patient's face;

an elbow assembly configured to be connected to an air delivery tube to deliver the supply of air to the patient's airways;

headgear comprising:

a rear portion configured to engage the occiput of the patient's head in use;

a pair of upper side straps extending from the rear portion, each of the upper side straps being configured to pass above a corresponding one of the patient's ears in use;

a pair of lower side straps extending from the rear portion, each of the lower side straps being configured to pass below a corresponding one of the patient's ears in use; and

a pair of lower headgear clips configured to receive respective ones of the pair of lower side straps; and

a headgear connector having a headgear connector opening, the headgear connector being configured to engage the curved interfacing structure of the mask frame to removably connect the headgear connector to the mask frame, the bore and the headgear connector opening being disposed about a common axis when the headgear connector and the mask frame are connected,

wherein the headgear connector and the mask frame are non-malleable,

wherein the headgear connector and the mask frame are detachably connected together by translating the mask frame and the headgear connector towards one another along the common axis until a snap-fit connection is established between the headgear connector and the curved interfacing structure of the mask frame,

wherein the headgear connector includes a pair of lower headgear clip receptacles configured to be engaged with respective ones of the pair of lower headgear clips to attach respective ones of the pair of lower side straps,

wherein the mask frame and the headgear connector are constructed to resist movement between the mask frame and the headgear connector when the mask frame and the headgear connector are attached, and

wherein the headgear connector includes a pair of upper openings configured to attach to respective ones of the pair of upper side straps.

20. The mask system according to claim 19 , wherein the headgear connector opening is circular, and

wherein the bore and the headgear connector opening are concentrically disposed about the common axis when the headgear connector and the mask frame are connected.

21. The mask system according to claim 19 , wherein the headgear connector does not include a forehead support.

22. The mask system according to claim 19 , wherein the mask frame and the cushion are configured to deliver the supply of air to the patient's nose and mouth.

23. The mask system according to claim 19 , wherein the cushion and the mask frame are permanently attached.

24. The mask system according to claim 19 , wherein the mask system further comprises a vent for gas washout.

25. The mask system according to claim 19 , wherein at least a portion of the headgear connector is shaped to conform to a portion of the mask frame.

26. The mask system according to claim 19 , wherein:

the mask frame and the cushion are configured to deliver the supply of air to the patient's nose and mouth,

the cushion and the mask frame are permanently attached,

the mask system further comprises a vent for gas washout, and

at least a portion of the headgear connector is shaped to conform to a portion of the mask frame.

27. A mask system for delivering a supply of air generated by a flow generator at a positive pressure in a therapeutic range of 2-30 cm H 2 O to a patient's airways to treat sleep disordered breathing, the mask system comprising:

a mask frame having a bore and a curved interfacing structure, the curved interfacing structure projecting radially from the bore, the mask frame having no built-in or integral headgear attachment points;

a cushion provided to the mask frame and configured to seal with the patient's face;

an elbow assembly configured to be connected to an air delivery tube to deliver the supply of air to the patient's airways;

a vent for gas washout;

a headgear connector having a headgear connector opening, the headgear connector being configured to engage the curved interfacing structure of the mask frame to removably connect the headgear connector to the mask frame, the bore and the headgear connector opening being disposed about a common axis when the headgear connector and the mask frame are connected; and

headgear configured to be attached to the headgear connector to hold the cushion in a sealing position on the patient's face in use,

wherein the headgear connector and the mask frame are non-malleable,

wherein the headgear connector and the mask frame are detachably connected together by translating the mask frame and the headgear connector towards one another along the common axis until a snap-fit connection is established between the headgear connector and the curved interfacing structure of the mask frame, and

wherein the mask frame and the headgear connector are constructed to resist movement between the mask frame and the headgear connector when the mask frame and the headgear connector are attached.

28. The mask system according to claim 27 , wherein the headgear connector opening is circular, and

wherein the bore and the headgear connector opening are concentrically disposed about the common axis when the headgear connector and the mask frame are connected.

29. The mask system according to claim 27 , wherein the headgear connector does not include a forehead support.

30. The mask system according to claim 27 , wherein:

the headgear includes a pair of upper side straps configured to extend above the patient's ears in use, a pair of lower side straps configured to extend below the patient's ears in use, a rear portion configured to engage the occiput of the patients head in use, and a pair of lower headgear clips configured to receive respective ones of the pair of lower side straps,

the headgear connector includes a pair of lower headgear clip receptacles configured to be engaged with respective ones of the pair of lower headgear clips to attach respective ones of the pair of lower side straps,

the headgear connector includes a pair of upper openings configured to attach to respective ones of the pair of upper side straps,

the mask frame and the cushion are configured to deliver the supply of air to the patient's nose and mouth, and

the cushion and the mask frame are permanently attached.
