Abstract

According to one embodiment, a display device includes a substrate, a lower electrode, a rib, a partition including a lower portion and an upper portion, an organic layer provided on the lower electrode and including a light emitting layer, and an upper electrode provided on the organic layer and in contact with the lower portion of the partition. The organic layer includes a first end portion located on the rib, and a second end portion located on the rib on an opposite side of the first end portion. A thickness of the upper electrode immediately above the second end portion is greater than a thickness of the upper electrode immediately above the first end portion.

Claims (71)

1. A display device comprising:

a substrate;

a lower electrode overlapping the substrate in a plan view;

a rib comprising an aperture overlapping the lower electrode;

a first partition comprising

a first lower portion provided on the rib, and

a first upper portion provided on the first lower portion and extending beyond a side surface of the first lower portion;

a second partition comprising

a second lower portion provided on the rib, and

a second upper portion provided on the second lower portion and extending beyond a side surface of the second lower portion;

an organic layer provided on the lower electrode in the aperture and including a light emitting layer; and

an upper electrode which is provided on the organic layer, the upper electrode is in direct contact with the side surface of the second lower portion of the second partition, and the upper electrode is not in contact with the side surface of the first lower portion of the first partition, wherein

the first partition and the second partition face each other across the aperture,

the organic layer comprises

a first end portion located on the rib and between the first lower portion of the first partition and the aperture, and

a second end portion located on the rib and between the second lower portion of the second partition and the aperture,

a second thickness of the upper electrode in a second region directly above the second end portion of the organic layer is greater than a first thickness of the upper electrode in a first region directly above the first end portion of the organic laver, and

a second contact area of the upper electrode and the second lower portion of the second partition is greater than a first contact area of the upper electrode and the first lower portion of the first partition.

2. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

the second lower portion of the second partition is formed of a conductive material, and

the upper electrode is electrically in contact with the second lower portion of the second partition.

3. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

the upper electrode is in direct contact with the rib between the second end portion of the organic layer and the second lower portion of the second partition.

4. The display device according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a cap layer provided on the upper electrode; and

a sealing layer which covers the cap layer and is in contact with the first lower portion of the first partition and the second lower portion of the second partition, wherein

the sealing layer covers the upper electrode between the second end portion of the organic layer and the second lower portion of the second partition.

5. The display device according to claim 4 , wherein

the sealing layer comprises

a first closed void under the first upper portion of the first partition, and

a second closed void under the second upper portion of the second partition,

the first end portion of the organic layer is located directly under the first closed void, and

the second end portion of the organic layer is located directly under the second closed void.

6. The display device according to claim 5 , wherein

each of the organic layer, the upper electrode and the cap layer comprises

a first portion located on the first upper portion of the first partition,

a second portion located on the second upper portion of the second partition, and

a third portion located on a lower side relative to the first upper portion of the first partition and the second upper portion of the second partition,

the first portion, the second portion and the third portion are spaced apart each other, and

the sealing layer

is in contact with the first portion, the second portion and the third portion of the cap layer, and

is in contact with the side surface of the first lower portion of the first partition, a lower surface of the first upper portion of the first partition, the side surface of the second lower portion of the second partition and a lower surface of the second upper portion of the second partition.

7. The display device according to claim 6 , wherein

the first portions of the organic layer, the upper electrode and the cap layer are formed as a first stacked layer body,

the first stacked layer body is provided on an entire upper surface of the first upper portion of the first partition,

the second portions of the organic layer, the upper electrode and the cap layer are formed as a second stacked layer body, and

the second stacked layer body is provided on an entire upper surface of the second upper portion of the second partition.

8. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

a fourth thickness of the upper electrode directly under an edge of the second upper portion of the second partition is greater than a third thickness of the upper electrode directly under an edge of the first upper portion of the first partition.

9. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

a sixth thickness of the upper electrode between the second end portion of the organic layer and the second lower portion of the second partition is greater than a fifth thickness of the upper electrode between the first end portion of the organic layer and the first lower portion of the first partition.

10. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

a second uppermost portion where the upper electrode contacts the second lower portion of the second partition is farther from the substrate than a first uppermost portion where the upper electrode contacts the first lower portion of the first partition.

11. The display device according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a cap layer provided on the upper electrode, wherein

the cap layer has a lower surface in contact with the upper electrode, and

a second distance between the lower surface of the cap layer and the substrate directly above the second end portion of the organic layer is greater than a first distance between the lower surface of the cap layer and the substrate directly above the first end portion of the organic layer.

12. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

a second contact resistance between the upper electrode and the second lower portion of the lower partition is smaller than a first contact resistance between the upper electrode and the first lower portion of the first partition.

13. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

the first upper portion of the first partition overlaps the first region in the plan view, and

the second upper portion of the second partition overlaps the second region in the plan view.

14. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

the side surface of the first lower portion of the first partition is overlapped in the plan view by the first upper portion, and

the side surface of the second lower portion of the second partition is overlapped in the plan view by the second upper portion.

15. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

the side surface of the first lower portion of the first partition is a surface that extends from a lower surface of the first upper portion of the first partition to an upper surface of the rib, and

the side surface of the second lower portion of the second partition is a surface that extends from a lower surface of the second upper portion of the second partition to the upper surface of the rib.

16. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

in a Z direction normal to a largest surface of the substrate, the rib is located between the substrate and the first lower portion of the first partition, and between the substrate and the second lower portion of the second partition, and

the upper electrode is in direct contact with the rib between the second end portion of the organic layer and the second lower portion of the second partition.
