Abstract

Implantable devices and/or sensors can be wirelessly powered by controlling and propagating electromagnetic waves in a patient's tissue. Such implantable devices/sensors can be implanted at target locations in a patient, to stimulate areas such as the heart, brain, spinal cord, or muscle tissue, and/or to sense biological, physiological, chemical attributes of the blood, tissue, and other patient parameters. The propagating electromagnetic waves can be generated with sub-wavelength structures configured to manipulate evanescent fields outside of tissue to generate the propagating waves inside the tissue. Methods of use are also described.

Claims (33)

1 . A method for modulating a neural tissue in a patient body, the method comprising:

implanting one or more electrodes of an implantable neural stimulator at a target site adjacent to or near the neural tissue; and

wirelessly delivering, through mid-field coupling and from a location exterior to the patient body, a power signal containing electrical energy to the target site where the implantable neural stimulator is implanted such that one or more electrical impulses are generated using the electrical energy in the power signal wirelessly delivered through mid-field coupling from the location exterior to the patient's body, wherein the mid-field coupling utilizes both evanescent and radiative components to deliver the power signal;

wherein the generated electrical impulses are provided through the electrodes to the neural tissue.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein implanting the one or more electrodes includes advancing the one or more electrodes through a catheter, a cannula, or a needle.

3 . The method of claim 1 , comprising receiving the power signal at a first antenna coupled to the implantable neural stimulator.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein receiving the power signal at the first antenna includes receiving the power signal at a multiple-turn coil antenna.

5 . The method of claim 1 , comprising generating the power signal using a transmitter and from the location exterior to the patient's body.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein generating the power signal includes using sub-wavelength structures of the transmitter.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein generating the power signal includes generating spatially-focused waves that propagate from the transmitter toward the implantable neural stimulator.

8 . The method of claim 1 , comprising storing at least a portion of the electrical energy from the power signal using an energy storage circuit in the implantable neural stimulator.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein one or more characteristics of the generated electrical impulses are based on information about a characteristic of the power signal.

10 . The method of claim 1 , comprising receiving a portion of a non-stationary signal propagating in tissue of the patient, wherein the non-stationary signal comprises the power signal.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the generated electrical impulses are provided to the neural tissue in coordination of receipt of the power signal at the implantable neural stimulator.

12 . An implantable neural stimulator for modulating neural tissue in a patient body, the implantable neural stimulator comprising:

a device body configured for implantation in the patient body via a catheter, cannula, or needle;

one or more electrodes coupled to the device body and configured to provide electrical impulses to neural tissue;

a first antenna coupled to the device body and configured to receive, from an external transmitter and via a mid-field transmission when the device body is implanted in the patient body, a power signal comprising electrical energy, wherein the mid-field transmission utilizes both evanescent and radiative components to transmit the power signal; and

a circuit coupled to the first antenna and the electrodes and configured to generate the electrical impulses.

13 . The implantable neural stimulator of claim 12 , wherein the circuit is configured to generate the electrical impulses based on information about a characteristic of the power signal.

14 . The implantable neural stimulator of claim 12 , comprising an energy storage circuit configured to store power from the received power signal.

15 . The implantable neural stimulator of claim 14 , wherein the circuit is configured to use energy from the energy storage circuit to generate the electrical impulses.

16 . The implantable neural stimulator of claim 12 , wherein the first antenna comprises a wire coil.

17 . The implantable neural stimulator of claim 12 , wherein the circuit is configured to generate the electrical impulses synchronously with receipt of the power signal.

18 . The implantable neural stimulator of claim 12 , wherein the circuit is configured to generate the electrical impulses asynchronously with receipt of the power signal.

19 . A system comprising:

an external transmitter; and

an implantable neural stimulator for modulating neural tissue in a patient body, the implantable neural stimulator comprising:

a device body configured for implantation in the patient body via a catheter, cannula, or needle;

one or more electrodes coupled to the device body and configured to provide electrical impulses to neural tissue;

a first antenna coupled to the device body and configured to receive, from the external transmitter and via a mid-field transmission when the device body is implanted in the patient body, a power signal comprising electrical energy, wherein the mid-field transmission utilizes both evanescent and radiative components to transmit the power signal; and

a circuit coupled to the first antenna and the electrodes and configured to generate the electrical impulses.

20 . The system of claim 19 , wherein the external transmitter comprises one or more sub-wavelength structures configured to produce the mid-field transmission in response to one or more respective excitation signals.
