Electronic device having antenna tuning components across a knuckle
An electronic device may be provided with peripheral conductive housing structures, a first antenna, and a second antenna. A gap may divide the housing structures into a first segment forming an arm of the first antenna and a second segment forming an arm of the second antenna. A first feed terminal may be coupled to the first segment and a second feed terminal may be coupled to the second segment. Switchable components may be coupled in parallel between the first and second feed terminals across the gap. The switchable components may be adjusted to tune the frequency response of the first and/or second antenna. The switchable components may have a first state in which only the first feed terminal feeds the first antenna and may have a second state in which both the first and second feed terminals feed the first antenna.
1 . An electronic device comprising:
peripheral conductive housing structures having a first segment and a second segment separated by a dielectric-filled gap;
a first transmission line path having a first signal conductor coupled to a first terminal on the first segment;
a second transmission line path having a second signal conductor coupled to a second terminal on the second segment; and
tuning components that are outside of the first and second transmission line paths and that couple the first terminal to the second terminal across the dielectric-filled gap.
2 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the tuning components comprise:
a capacitor coupled between the first and second terminals; and
a first switch coupled in series between the capacitor and the first terminal.
3 . The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the tuning components further comprise:
a resistor coupled in parallel with the capacitor between the first and second terminals; and
a second switch coupled in series between the resistor and the first terminal.
4 . The electronic device of claim 3 , wherein the tuning components further comprise:
a first inductor coupled in parallel with the capacitor and the resistor between the first and second terminals; and
a third switch coupled in series between the first inductor and the first terminal.
5 . The electronic device of claim 4 , wherein the tuning components further comprise:
a second inductor coupled in parallel with the capacitor, the resistor, and the first inductor between the first and second terminals.
6 . The electronic device of claim 1 , further comprising:
a flexible printed circuit having a first portion and a second portion extending from an end of the first portion, wherein first signal conductor and the tuning components are disposed on the first portion and the second signal conductor is disposed on the second portion.
7 . The electronic device of claim 6 , wherein the first portion is folded about a first axis and the second portion is folded about a second axis different from the first axis.
8 . The electronic device of claim 6 , further comprising:
a first conductive screw that couples the first signal conductor and the tuning components to the first terminal on the first segment; and
a second conductive screw that couples the second signal conductor and the tuning components to the second terminal on the second segment;
a first impedance matching circuit mounted to the first portion and disposed on the first signal conductor; and
a second impedance matching circuit mounted to the second portion and disposed on the second signal conductor.
9 . An electronic device comprising:
peripheral conductive housing structures having a dielectric-filled gap that divides the peripheral conductive housing structures into a first segment and a second segment;
a first antenna having a first arm formed from the first segment and having a first feed terminal coupled to the first segment;
a second antenna having a second arm formed from the second segment and having a second feed terminal coupled to the second segment;
a switchable component that couples the first feed terminal to the second feed terminal across the dielectric-filled gap;
a printed circuit that includes a first portion folded about a first axis and a second portion folded about a second axis different from the first axis, wherein
the switchable component is mounted to the printed circuit,
the first portion of the flexible printed circuit is coupled to the first feed terminal, and
the second portion of the flexible printed circuit is coupled to the second feed terminal.
10 . The electronic device of claim 9 , wherein the switchable component has a first state in which the first feed terminal feeds the first antenna and the second feed terminal feeds the second antenna and has a second state in which both the first and second feed terminals feed the first antenna and the second feed terminal feeds the second antenna.
11 . The electronic device of claim 9 , further comprising:
a switchable inductor coupled in parallel with the switchable component between the first feed terminal and the second feed terminal across the dielectric-filled gap.
12 . The electronic device of claim 11 , further comprising:
a switchable capacitor coupled in parallel with the switchable component and the switchable inductor between the first feed terminal and the second feed terminal across the dielectric-filled gap.
13 . The electronic device of claim 12 , further comprising:
a fixed inductor coupled in parallel with the switchable component, the switchable inductor, and the switchable capacitor between the first feed terminal and the second feed terminal across the dielectric-filled gap.
14 . The electronic device of claim 13 , wherein the switchable component comprises a switch and a resistor coupled in series between the first feed terminal and the second feed terminal.
15 . The electronic device of claim 9 , further comprising:
a fixed inductor coupled in parallel with the switchable component between the first feed terminal and the second feed terminal across the dielectric-filled gap.
16 . The electronic device of claim 9 , further comprising:
a first conductive screw that couples the printed circuit and the switchable component to the first feed terminal; and
a second conductive screw that couples the printed circuit and the switchable component to the second feed terminal.
17 . The electronic device of claim 16 , wherein the first conductive screw couples the first arm of the printed circuit to the first feed terminal, and the second conductive screw couples the second arm of the printed circuit to the second feed terminal.
18 . An antenna comprising:
an antenna ground;
a resonating element arm;
a conductive structure separated from the resonating element arm by a gap;
a first feed terminal on the resonating element arm and coupled to a first signal conductor of a first radio-frequency transmission line;
a switchable component that couples the first feed terminal to a second feed terminal on the conductive structure across the gap, the second feed terminal being coupled to a second signal conductor of a second radio-frequency transmission line that is different from the first radio-frequency transmission line; and
a flexible printed circuit that includes a first arm coupled to the first feed terminal and a second arm coupled to the second feed terminal, wherein
the first arm includes the first radio-frequency transmission line,
the second arm includes the second radio-frequency transmission line,
the first arm is folded about a first axis, and
the second arm is folded about a second axis different than the first axis.
19 . The antenna of claim 18 , further comprising:
a switchable inductor that couples the first feed terminal to the second feed terminal across the gap in parallel with the switchable component;
a switchable capacitor that couples the first feed terminal to the second feed terminal across the gap in parallel with the switchable component and the switchable inductor; and
a fixed inductor that couples the first feed terminal to the second feed terminal across the gap in parallel with the switchable component, the switchable inductor, and the switchable capacitor.
20 . The electronic device of claim 1 , further comprising:
first impedance matching circuitry that is different from the tuning components, wherein the first signal conductor couples the first impedance matching circuitry to the first terminal; and
second impedance matching circuitry that is different from the first impedance matching circuitry and the tuning components, wherein the second signal conductor couples the second impedance matching circuitry to the second terminal.
