Abstract

Apparatuses, systems and methods of providing heat to enable an FDM additive manufacturing nozzle having refined print control and enhanced printing speed. The heating element may include at least one sheath sized to fittedly engage around an outer circumference of the FDM printer nozzle; at least one wire coil at least partially contacting an inner diameter of the sheath; and at least one energy receiver associated with the at least one wire coil.

Claims (21)

1. A heating element for a 3D printer nozzle having a tip from which exits 3D print material, and a nozzle body terminating in the tip, comprising:

a first sheath comprising a first inner diameter and a first outer diameter, wherein the first sheath is provided as a bolt-on to readily engage and disengage around an outer circumference of the 3D printer nozzle;

a first nichrome wire coil embedded between a first threshold of the first inner diameter of the first sheath and a second threshold of the first outer diameter of the first sheath;

an insulating layer comprising glass fabric positioned between the outer circumference of the 3D printer nozzle and the first inner diameter of the first sheath; and

at least one energy receiver associated with the first nichrome wire coil,

wherein the first nichrome wire coil is capable of delivering multiple heating zones comprising a hotter zone proximate the tip and a cooler zone at the nozzle body to the outer circumference of the 3D printer nozzle, and

wherein the insulating layer is configured to direct heat of the multiple heating zones, in the form of infrared (IR) power, towards the 3D printer nozzle.

2. The heating element of claim 1 , wherein the at least one energy receiver comprises at least one current receiving wire.

3. The heating element of claim 1 , wherein the first nichrome wire coil is at least partially staggered along a longitudinal axis of the 3D printer nozzle.

4. The heating element of claim 1 , wherein the at least one energy receiver comprises at least one of a Newtonian, a convective, and a radiative energy receiver.

5. The heating element of claim 1 , wherein the insulating layer provides at least one of enhanced thermal coupling, redistribution of heat, and insulation from overheating.

6. The heating element of claim 1 , further comprising at least one resistance sensor capable of sensing a resistance change in the first nichrome wire coil as indicative of a level of heating delivered to the 3D printer nozzle.

7. The heating element of claim 1 , wherein the at least one energy receiver comprises a thermocouple.

8. The heating element of claim 1 , further comprising a nozzle temperature sensor embedded in the first sheath.

9. The heating element of claim 1 , further comprising

a second sheath concentrically located about the first sheath, the second sheath having a second nichrome wire coil embedded therein,

second wire coil are configured to deliver the multiple heating zones comprising the hotter zone proximate the tip and the cooler zone at the nozzle body to the outer circumference of the 3D nozzle.

10. The heating element of claim 1 , further comprising:

a second sheath comprising a second inner diameter and a second outer diameter, wherein the second sheath is concentrically located about the first sheath; and

a second nichrome wire coil embedded between a third threshold of the second inner diameter of the second sheath and a fourth threshold of the second outer diameter of the second sheath.

11. The heating element of claim 1 , wherein the insulating layer comprises reflectors positioned on the first inner diameter of the first sheath configured to redirect IR power into the 3D printer nozzle.
