Abstract

Systems and methods of capacity changes in an optical network having a plurality of optical sections include, responsive to a request for a capacity change for a plurality of channels, bundling the plurality of channels into different steps such that all of the plurality of channels are assigned to a step of the different steps; and causing implementation of the different steps across the plurality of optical sections, wherein each section performs the implementation and the bundling between corresponding Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (OADM) nodes independently and asynchronously from one another.

Claims (30)

1 . A method of capacity changes in an optical network having a plurality of optical sections, the method comprising:

responsive to a request for a capacity change for a plurality of channels, bundling the plurality of channels into different steps such that all of the plurality of channels are assigned to a step of the different steps; and

implementing the different steps across the plurality of optical sections, wherein each section performs the implementation and the bundling between corresponding Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (OADM) nodes independently and asynchronously from one another,

wherein one of

each section performs the implementing and the bundling without any communication or notification from upstream controllers to sequence channel actions, or

each section performs the implementing asynchronously from other sections meaning a given channel of the plurality of channels that traverses multiple optical sections does not need to be in a same step or do the different steps need to be coordinated in time.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the implementing of each step of the different steps includes switching between traffic-carrying channels and channel holders.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each section performs the implementing and the bundling without notification to peer sections.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each step of the different steps includes some of the plurality of channels placed throughout optical spectrum for a given optical section.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of channels are placed throughout optical spectrum for the given optical section in an interleaved manner.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the bundling is based on an impact to existing traffic-carrying channels, and wherein the impact includes one or more of amplifier tilt, ripple, spectral hole burning effects, and changes in Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS).

7 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause one or more controllers, associated with an optical network having a plurality of optical sections, to perform steps of:

responsive to a request for a capacity change for a plurality of channels, bundling the plurality of channels into different steps such that all of the plurality of channels are assigned to a step of the different steps; and

causing implementation of the different steps across the plurality of optical sections, wherein each section performs the implementation and the bundling between corresponding Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (OADM) nodes independently and asynchronously from one another,

wherein one of

each section performs the implementation and the bundling without any communication or notification from upstream controllers to sequence channel action, or

each section performs the implementation asynchronously from other sections meaning a given channel of the plurality of channels that traverses multiple optical sections does not need to be in a same step or do the different steps need to be coordinated in time.

8 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the implementation of each step of the different steps includes switching between traffic-carrying channels and channel holders.

9 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein each section performs the implementation and the bundling without notification to peer sections.

10 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein each step of the different steps includes some of the plurality of channels placed throughout optical spectrum for a given optical section.

11 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of channels are placed throughout optical spectrum for the given optical section in an interleaved manner.

12 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the bundling is based on an impact to existing traffic-carrying channels, and wherein the impact includes one or more of amplifier tilt, ripple, spectral hole burning effects, and changes in Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS).

13 . A system comprising:

one or more controllers, each associated with an optical section of a plurality of optical sections in an optical network, each controller is configured to, for a given optical section,

responsive to a request for a capacity change for a plurality of channels, bundle the plurality of channels into different steps such that all of the plurality of channels are assigned to a step of the different steps; and

causing implementation of the different steps across the given optical section,

wherein each of the one or more controllers performs the implementation and the bundle of the plurality of channels between corresponding Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (OADM) nodes of the given optical section independently and asynchronously from other controllers,

wherein each of the one or more controllers performs the implementation and the bundle of the plurality of channels without any communication or notification from upstream controllers to sequence channel actions.

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the implementation of each step of the different steps includes switching between traffic-carrying channels and channel holders.

15 . The system of claim 13 , wherein each of the one or more controllers performs the implementation and the bundling without notification to peer controllers.
