Abstract

An energy management system and methods of using the same are disclosed. The energy management system is configured to deploy a first instantiation of a first hardware driver at a first electronic control device collocated with a first power plant apparatus, wherein the first hardware driver is configured to communicate with and enable control of the first power plant apparatus. The energy management system is configured to detect that the first instantiation of the first hardware driver at the first electronic control device has failed, and at least partly in response to detecting that the first instantiation of the first hardware driver at the first electronic control device has failed, utilize a second instantiation of the first hardware driver, stored in memory remote from the first electronic control device, to enable control of the first power plant apparatus.

Claims (41)

1. An energy management system, comprising:

a network interface; and

at least one processing device operable to:

deploy a first instantiation of a first hardware interface module at a first electronic control device collocated with a first power plant apparatus,

wherein the first hardware interface module is configured to communicate with and enable control of the first power plant apparatus;

detect that the first instantiation of the first hardware interface module at the first electronic control device has failed; and

at least partly in response to detecting that the first instantiation of the first hardware interface module at the first electronic control device has failed, utilize a second instantiation of the first hardware interface module, stored in memory remote from the first electronic control device, to enable control of the first power plant apparatus via the network interface and to adjust power and reactive power in real time at least partly in response to changes in grid frequency, the second instantiation of the first hardware interface module comprising software configured to virtualize a device interface to the first power plant apparatus,

wherein the second instantiation of the first hardware interface module is automatically selected based at least in part on a proximity of a device hosting the second instantiation of the first hardware interface module to the first power plant apparatus.

2. The energy management system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first power plant apparatus, the first electronic control device, and the memory remote from the first electronic control device, are located at a first power plant site, wherein the at least one processing device is operable to:

enable a third instantiation of the first hardware interface module, hosted by a cloud-based computer system remote from the first power plant site, to enable control of the first power plant apparatus at least partly in response to a failure of the first instantiation of the first hardware interface module and a failure of the second instantiation of the first hardware interface module.

3. The energy management system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the memory remote from the first electronic control device comprises memory of a second electronic control device.

4. The energy management system as defined in claim 1 , wherein there are a plurality of instantiations of the first hardware interface module stored in respective memories of physically separate electronic control devices.

5. The energy management system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second instantiation of the first hardware interface module is maintained in hot standby or on-demand mode.

6. The energy management system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first power plant apparatus comprises a battery or an inverter.

7. The energy management system as defined in claim 1 , wherein a plurality of versions of the first electronic control device are located at a first power plant site, wherein the at least one processing device is operable to:

select from a plurality of versions of hardware device interface modules stored in memory, the plurality of versions of hardware device interface modules configured for respective versions of the first electronic control device, an appropriate version of the hardware device interface module for a first version of the first electronic control device; and

deploy the appropriate version of the hardware device interface module for the first version of the first electronic control device to the first version of the first electronic control device.

8. The energy management system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first electronic control device comprises a programmable logic controller.

9. The energy management system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first instantiation of the first hardware interface module failed as a result of a failure of the first electronic control device.

10. The energy management system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second instantiation of the first hardware interface module is maintained in hot backup execution mode.

11. An energy management system, comprising:

a network interface; and

at least one processing device operable to:

deploy a first instantiation of a first hardware interface module at a first electronic control device collocated with a first power plant apparatus,

wherein the first hardware interface module is configured to communicate with and enable control of the first power plant apparatus;

detect that the first instantiation of the first hardware interface module at the first electronic control device has failed; and

at least partly in response to detecting that the first instantiation of the first hardware interface module at the first electronic control device has failed,

utilize a second instantiation of the first hardware interface module, stored in memory, to enable control of the first power plant apparatus via the network interface and to adjust power and reactive power in real time at least partly in response to changes in grid frequency, the second instantiation of the first hardware interface module comprising software configured to virtualize a device interface to the first power plant apparatus, wherein the second instantiation of the first hardware interface module is automatically selected based at least in part on a proximity of a device hosting the second instantiation of the first hardware interface module to the first power plant apparatus.

12. The energy management system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the first power plant apparatus, the first electronic control device, and the memory, are located at a first power plant site, wherein the at least one processing device is operable to:

enable a third instantiation of the first hardware interface module, hosted by a cloud-based computer system remote from the first power plant site, to enable control of the first power plant apparatus at least partly in response to a failure of the first instantiation of the first hardware interface module and a failure of the second instantiation of the first hardware interface module.

13. The energy management system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the memory comprises memory of a second electronic control device.

14. The energy management system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the memory comprises memory of a second electronic control device collocated with the first electronic device.
