Abstract

Filter media having a relatively small pore size and related components, systems, and methods associated therewith are provided. The filter media may include a fibrous efficiency layer, a fibrous support layer, and a third layer adjacent to the efficiency layer. The efficiency layer may impart a relatively homogeneous pore structure to the filter media without adding substantial bulk to the filter media. The support layer may promote the homogeneity of the pore structure. For example, the support layer may prevent and/or minimize defects in the relatively thin efficiency layer that may result from manufacturing and/or processing. The third layer may serve to impart beneficial filtration (e.g., efficiency, dust holding capacity) and/or non-filtration (e.g., layer protection) properties to the filter media without adversely affecting one or more properties of the filter media. Filter media, as described herein, may be particularly well-suited for applications that involve liquid filtration, amongst other applications.

Claims (32)

1 . (canceled)

2 . A filter media comprising:

a first fiber web comprising first fibers, wherein the first fibers have an average diameter of less than or equal to 0.5 microns, wherein the first fiber web has a thickness of less than or equal to 200 microns;

a second fiber web directly adjacent to the first fiber web;

a third fiber web bonded to the first fiber web; and

a fourth fiber web;

wherein two or more of the fiber webs are joined by lamination, thermo-dot bonding, calendering, through-gas bonding, an ultrasonic process, a chemical bonding process, and/or an adhesive.

3 . The filter media of claim 2 , wherein two or more fiber webs are joined by an ultrasonic process.

4 . The filter media of claim 2 , wherein two or more fiber webs are joined by an adhesive.

5 . The filter media of claim 4 , wherein the adhesive comprises an acrylic copolymer, a copolyester, a polyolefin, a polyamide, a polyurethane, a styrene block copolymer, a thermoplastic elastomer, a polycarbonates, and/or a silicone.

6 . The filter media of claim 2 , wherein the fourth fiber web comprises a scrim fiber web.

7 . The filter media of claim 2 , wherein the fourth fiber web is directly adjacent to the third fiber web.

8 . The filter media of claim 2 , wherein the fourth fiber web comprises a wet laid fiber web.

9 . The filter media of claim 2 , wherein the filter media has a water permeability of greater than or equal to 2 ml/min·cm 2 ·psi.

10 . The filter media of claim 2 , wherein the filter media has a water permeability of greater than or equal to 5 ml/min·cm 2 ·psi.

11 . The filter media of claim 2 , wherein the filter media has a water permeability of greater than or equal to 8 ml/min·cm 2 ·psi.

12 . The filter media of claim 2 , wherein the filter media has a water permeability of greater than or equal to about 2 ml/min·cm 2 ·psi and less than or equal to about 9 ml/min·cm 2 ·psi.

13 . The filter media of claim 2 , wherein the filter media has an air permeability of greater than or equal to 0.5 CFM and less than or equal to 10 CFM.

14 . The filter media of claim 2 , when the first fiber web comprises first fibers having an average diameter of greater than or equal to 0.05 microns and less than or equal to 0.5 microns.

15 . The filter media of claim 2 , wherein the filter media is sterile.

16 . The filter media of claim 2 , wherein the fourth fiber web comprises synthetic fibers.

17 . The filter media of claim 16 , wherein the synthetic fibers comprise polyester, polypropylene, polyamide, and/or polyethylene.

18 . A filter element comprising the filter media of claim 2 .

19 . A method of using the filter media of claim 2 for liquid filtration.

20 . A method of using the filter media of claim 2 for water filtration.

21 . A method, comprising:

forming a filter media comprising:

a first fiber web comprising first fibers, wherein the first fibers have an average diameter of less than or equal to 0.5 microns, wherein the first fiber web has a thickness of less than or equal to 200 microns;

a second fiber web directly adjacent to the first fiber web;

a third fiber web bonded to the first fiber web; and

a fourth fiber web;

wherein the method further comprises joining two or more of the fiber webs by lamination, thermo-dot bonding, calendering, through-gas bonding, an ultrasonic process, a chemical bonding process, and/or an adhesive.
