Abstract

A bipolar electrosurgical instrument includes first and second shafts each having a jaw member extending from its distal end. Each jaw member is adapted to connect to a source of electrosurgical energy such that the jaw members are capable of selectively conducting energy through tissue held therebetween. A knife channel is configured to reciprocate a cutting mechanism therealong. An actuator selectively advances the cutting mechanism. A switch is disposed on the first shaft and is configured to be depressed between a first position and at least one subsequent position upon biasing engagement with a mechanical interface disposed on the second shaft. The first position of the switch relays information to the user corresponding to a desired pressure on tissue and the at least one subsequent position is configured to activate the source of electrosurgical energy to supply electrosurgical energy to the jaw members.

Claims (29)

1 . A surgical forceps, comprising:

an end effector configured to grasp tissue;

first and second shafts coupled to the end effector and configured to rotate relative to each other about a pivot;

a first jaw disposed at a distal end of the first shaft;

a second jaw disposed at a distal end of the second shaft, wherein the end effector comprises the first jaw and the second jaw;

a stop member disposed on the first jaw and configured to control a distance between the first jaw and the second jaw;

a knife configured to translate longitudinally through the first shaft;

a trigger coupled to the knife and extending from the first shaft, the trigger configured to rotate to cause longitudinal translation of the knife to cut the tissue grasped by the end effector; and

an anti-deployment link disposed within the first shaft adjacent to the trigger and configured to engage the trigger to prevent rotation of the trigger.

2 . The surgical forceps according to claim 1 , wherein approximation of the first and second shafts moves the anti-deployment link out of engagement with the trigger to permit rotation of the trigger.

3 . The surgical forceps according to claim 1 , further comprising a trigger link extending from the trigger, wherein the anti-deployment link is configured to directly engage the trigger link to prevent rotation of the trigger.

4 . The surgical forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the trigger includes a pair of handle members extending from opposing sides of the first shaft and configured to be rotated relative to the first shaft to cause longitudinal translation of the knife.

5 . The surgical forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the end effector is configured to deliver electrosurgical energy to the tissue grasped by the end effector.

6 . A surgical forceps, comprising:

a pair of shafts moveable about a pivot to cause an end effector to engage tissue, wherein the end effector includes a pair of opposing jaw members, at least one jaw member of the pair of opposing jaw members including a stop member disposed on the at least one jaw member, the stop member configured to control a distance between the pair of opposing jaw members;

a trigger extending from a first shaft of the pair of shafts and configured to rotate to cause longitudinal translation of a knife through the first shaft to cut the tissue engaged by the end effector; and

an anti-deployment link disposed within the first shaft adjacent to the trigger and configured to engage the trigger to prevent rotation of the trigger.

7 . The surgical forceps according to claim 6 , wherein approximation of the pair of shafts moves the anti-deployment link out of engagement with the trigger to permit rotation of the trigger.

8 . The surgical forceps according to claim 6 , further comprising a trigger link extending from the trigger, wherein the anti-deployment link is configured to directly engage the trigger link to prevent rotation of the trigger.

9 . The surgical forceps according to claim 6 , wherein the trigger includes a pair of handle members extending from opposing sides of one shaft of the pair of shafts and configured to be rotated to cause longitudinal translation of the knife.

10 . The surgical forceps according to claim 6 , wherein the end effector is configured to deliver electrosurgical energy to the tissue engaged by the end effector.

11 . A surgical forceps, comprising:

a pair of shafts configured to pivot a pair of jaw members between an open position and a closed position;

a stop member disposed on at least one jaw member of the pair of jaw members and configured to control a distance between the pair of jaw members;

a trigger extending from a first shaft of the pair of shafts and configured to rotate to cause longitudinal translation of a knife through the first shaft to cut tissue disposed between the pair of jaw members when the pair of jaw members are in the closed position; and

an anti-deployment link configured to contact a trigger link extending from the trigger to prevent rotation of the trigger when the pair of jaw members are in the open position.

12 . The surgical forceps according to claim 11 , wherein approximation of the pair of shafts moves the anti-deployment link out of contact with the trigger link to permit rotation of the trigger when the pair of jaw members are in the closed position.

13 . The surgical forceps according to claim 12 , wherein the trigger link is rotatable.

14 . The surgical forceps according to claim 11 , wherein the pair of jaw members is configured to deliver electrosurgical energy to the tissue disposed between the pair of jaw members.
