Abstract

Embodiments are described of a sensing network including one or more sensor nodes, wherein each of the one or more sensor nodes includes a gas sensor that can measure the presence, concentration, or both, of one or more airborne pollutants in a nodal coverage area surrounding the sensor node. A sensor base that can measure the presence, concentration, or both, of one or more airborne pollutants is positioned in the nodal coverage area of each of the one or more sensor nodes, wherein the sensor base includes a gas sensor with higher accuracy, higher sensitivity, or both, than the gas sensors of the one or more sensor nodes. One or more servers communicatively coupled to the sensor base and the one or more sensors nodes. The sensor base and the sensor nodes can communicate their measurements to the server and the measurements of the sensor base are used by the server as a reference to correct the measurements of the one or more sensor nodes.

Claims (25)

1. A sensing network comprising:

one or more sensor nodes, wherein each sensor node includes a gas sensor that measures the presence, concentration, or both, of one or more airborne pollutants in a coverage area surrounding each sensor node;

a mobile sensor base that moves along a path along which the mobile sensor base collects a sample from the coverage area of at least one of the one or more sensor nodes, wherein the mobile sensor base includes a gas sensor with higher accuracy and higher sensitivity than the gas sensor in each sensor node; and

a data center including one or more servers communicatively coupled to the one or more sensor nodes and the mobile sensor base;

wherein the one or more sensor nodes and the mobile sensor base communicate their measurements to the data center and wherein the measurements of the mobile sensor base, the one or more sensor nodes, or both the mobile sensor base and the one or more sensor nodes, are used by the one or more servers as a reference to correct the measurements of the one or more sensor nodes.

2. The sensing network of claim 1 wherein the mobile sensor base collects air samples in a base coverage area surrounding the mobile sensor base, and wherein the base coverage area overlaps the coverage area of at least one of the one or more sensors nodes so that the sample collected in the base coverage area is considered representative of the sample collected in the coverage area of the at least one of the one or more sensors nodes.

3. The sensing network of claim 1 wherein the measurements of the mobile sensor base are used to recalibrate the one or more sensor nodes.

4. The sensing network of claim 1 wherein the mobile sensor base and the one or more sensor nodes are communicatively coupled to the data center wirelessly, by wire, or both.

5. The sensing network of claim 4 wherein the one or more sensor nodes are communicatively coupled wirelessly, by wire, or both, to the mobile sensor base, so that the one or more sensor nodes are communicatively coupled to the data center via the mobile sensor base or at least one of the one or more stationary sensor bases.

6. The sensing network of claim 1 wherein the mobile sensor base or the one or more stationary sensor bases collect air samples at or around the coverage area of each sensor node at a specified fixed frequency or specified temporal period.

7. The sensing network of claim 1 wherein the mobile sensor base or the one or more stationary sensor bases collect air samples at or around the coverage area of each sensor node at a frequency or temporal duration that depends on the drift rates of the one or more sensor nodes.

8. The sensing network of claim 1 wherein the one or more airborne pollutants include organic or inorganic chemicals, airborne particulate matter (PM), heavy metal contaminants, or airborne biological contaminants.

9. A sensing network comprising:

one or more sensor nodes, wherein each sensor node includes a gas sensor that measures the presence, concentration, or both, of one or more airborne pollutants in a coverage area surrounding the sensor node;

one or more stationary sensor bases that measure the presence, concentration, or both, of the one or more airborne pollutants in the coverage area of at least one of the one or more sensor nodes, wherein each stationary sensor base includes a gas sensor with higher accuracy and higher sensitivity than the gas sensor in each sensor node and wherein at least one stationary sensor base has one or more sampling tubes through which the at least one stationary sensor base collects samples from the coverage areas of multiple sensor nodes; and
