Abstract

Micro-droplet delivery devices and methods are described where the device may comprise a piezoelectric actuator having a piezoelectric chip that is operatively coupled to a drug package under a preloading force. The actuator is configured to generate an acoustic pressure within the drug package to dispense droplets of an agent from an aperture, e.g., to the corneal surface of the eye. The piezoelectric actuator can be coupled or decoupled from the drug package.

Claims (48)

1. A fluid delivery device, the device comprising:

a drug package having:

(a) a reservoir configured to contain a fluid;

(b) a cavity to accommodate a volume of the fluid from the reservoir;

(c) an aperture through which the fluid in the cavity can be ejected; and

(d) a pathway between the reservoir and the cavity to direct the fluid from the reservoir into the cavity, the pathway having a cross-sectional area smaller than that of the cavity; and

an actuator designed to oscillate against the cavity in order to generate fluid pressure within the cavity and from which the fluid is ejected through the aperture.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the aperture has a diameter of 80-120 microns.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the aperture is tapered.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is configured to have a displacement of 1-5 microns.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the pathway further comprises a restriction between the cavity and the reservoir to restrict propagation of the pressure from the cavity to the reservoir.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the restriction reduces the cross-sectional area of the pathway by 50-90%.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the drug package further comprises:

a venting port to permit air to enter the reservoir as the fluid is dispensed, thereby preventing a vacuum.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the drug package further comprises:

a membrane that, when acted upon, generates the pressure within the fluid accommodated by the cavity; and

wherein the actuator oscillates against the membrane to displace the membrane which then generates the pressure within the fluid accommodated by the cavity.

9. An apparatus for emitting a fluid, the apparatus comprising:

a drug package having:

(a) a reservoir configured to contain the fluid;

(b) a cavity to accommodate a volume of the fluid from the reservoir;

(c) an aperture through which the fluid in the cavity can be ejected; and

(d) a pathway between the reservoir and the cavity to direct the fluid from the reservoir into the cavity; and

an actuator designed to oscillate against the cavity in order to generate fluid pressure within the cavity, the presence of which ejects the fluid through the aperture while allowing a cross-sectional area of the pathway to remain smaller than a cross-sectional area of the cavity.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the aperture has a diameter of 80-120 microns.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the aperture is tapered.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the actuator is configured to have a displacement of 1-5 microns.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the pathway further comprises a restriction between the cavity and the reservoir to restrict propagation of the pressure from the cavity to the reservoir.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the restriction reduces the cross-sectional area of the pathway by 50-90%.

15. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the drug package further comprises:

a venting port to permit air to enter the reservoir as the fluid is dispensed, thereby preventing a vacuum.

16. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the drug package further comprises:

a membrane that, when acted upon, generates the pressure within the fluid accommodated by the cavity; and

wherein the actuator oscillates against the membrane to displace the membrane which then generates the pressure within the fluid accommodated by the cavity.

17. A fluid delivery device, the device comprising:

a drug package having:

(a) a reservoir configured to contain a fluid;

(b) a cavity to accommodate a volume of the fluid from the reservoir;

(c) an aperture through which the fluid in the cavity can be ejected; and

(d) a pathway between the reservoir and the cavity to direct the fluid from the reservoir into the cavity, the pathway having a cross-sectional area smaller than that of the cavity, the pathway comprising a restriction between the cavity and the reservoir to restrict propagation of the pressure from the cavity to the reservoir, the restriction reducing the cross-sectional area of the pathway by 50-90%; and

an actuator designed to oscillate against the cavity in order to generate fluid pressure within the cavity and from which the fluid is ejected through the aperture.

18. An apparatus for emitting a fluid, the apparatus comprising:

a drug package having:

(a) a reservoir configured to contain the fluid;

(b) a cavity to accommodate a volume of the fluid from the reservoir;

(c) an aperture through which the fluid in the cavity can be ejected; and

(d) a pathway between the reservoir and the cavity to direct the fluid from the reservoir into the cavity, wherein the pathway further comprises a restriction between the cavity and the reservoir to restrict propagation of the pressure from the cavity to the reservoir, wherein the restriction reduces the cross-sectional area of the pathway by 50-90%; and

an actuator designed to oscillate against the cavity in order to generate fluid pressure within the cavity, the presence of which ejects the fluid through the aperture while allowing a cross-sectional area of the pathway to remain smaller than a cross-sectional area of the cavity.
