Abstract

Various embodiments of the present disclosure relate to methods and systems for measuring an injected fuel quantity during multipulse injection events in a common rail of a fuel system including a fuel pump to supply fuel to the common rail. The method, using a control unit, determines if each of the multipulse injection events in a normal operating condition includes a pilot pulse; in response to determining that the pilot pulse is included, obtaining an enforced separation value between the pilot pulse and the main pulse to emulate a single-pulse injection; while the fuel pump is temporarily shut off, performing a temporary enforced separation on a fraction of the multipulse injection events; measuring a pressure change in the common rail during the temporary enforced separation; and resuming the normal operating condition of the multipulse injection events after the pressure change is measured.

Claims (36)

1. A method of measuring an injected fuel quantity during operation of a common rail fuel system including a control unit configured to control a fuel pump to supply fuel to a common rail and to control one or more injectors to inject fuel from the common rail, the method comprising:

operating the one or more injectors according to normal multipulse injection parameters including a normal pilot-pulse to main-pulse separation;

with the fuel pump shut off, operating the one or more injectors according to modified multipulse injection parameters including a modified pilot-pulse to main-pulse separation, the modified pilot-pulse to main-pulse separation being greater than the normal pilot-pulse to main-pulse separation;

sensing a pressure drop of the common rail fuel system during the operating the one or more injectors according to the modified multipulse injection parameters; and

after the sensing operating the one or more injectors according to the normal multipulse injection parameters.

2. The method of claim 1 , comprising: determining if the normal multipulse injection parameters include a pilot-pulse and a main-pulse.

3. The method of claim 2 , comprising: in response to determining that the normal multipulse injection parameters include the pilot-pulse and the main-pulse, obtaining an enforced separation value and applying the enforced separation value to provide the modified pilot-pulse to main-pulse separation.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the enforced separation value is empirically determined for a plurality of pilot quantities, main quantities, pressures, and separations to provide a main pulse quantity of an amount that would result if there were no pilot pulse present.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the modified multipulse injection parameters emulate a single-pulse injection.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the operating the one or more injectors according to modified multipulse injection parameters is performed for a subset of a plurality of multipulse injection events.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the subset comprises a one multipulse injection event in every 1000 or more multipulse injection events.

8. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

obtaining an injection drain quantity of the pilot pulse and the main pulse in the common rail; and

calculating the injected fuel quantity based on the pressure change in the common rail and the injection drain quantity.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the normal multipulse injection parameters include a post pulse, and the modified multipulse injection parameters omit the post pulse.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the modified multipulse injection parameters increase an amount of fuel injected by a main pulse to compensate for the temporary omission of the post pulse.

11. A system comprising:

a fuel pump;

a common rail fluidly coupled with the fuel pump and configured to receive fuel from the fuel pump;

one or more fuel injectors fluidly coupled with the common rail and configured to inject the fuel supplied to the common rail by the fuel pump;

an electronic control system operatively coupled with and configured to control operation of the one or more fuel injectors and the fuel pump, the electronic control system being configured to:

operate the one or more injectors according to normal multipulse injection parameters including a normal pilot-pulse to main-pulse separation;

with the fuel pump shut off, operate the one or more injectors according to modified multipulse injection parameters including a modified pilot-pulse to main-pulse separation, the modified pilot-pulse to main-pulse separation being greater than the normal pilot-pulse to main-pulse separation;

sense a pressure drop of the common rail fuel system during the operating the one or more injectors according to the modified multipulse injection parameters; and

after the pressure drop is sensed, operate the one or more injectors according to the normal multipulse injection parameters.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the electronic control system is configured to: determine if the normal multipulse injection parameters include a pilot-pulse and a main-pulse.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the electronic control system is configured to: in response to a determination that the normal multipulse injection parameters include the pilot-pulse and the main-pulse, obtain an enforced separation value and apply the enforced separation value to provide the modified pilot-pulse to main-pulse separation.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the enforced separation value is empirically determined for a plurality of pilot quantities, main quantities, pressures, and separations to provide a main pulse quantity of an amount that would result if there were no pilot pulse present.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the modified multipulse injection parameters emulate a single-pulse injection.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the electronic control system is configured to operate the one or more injectors according to the modified multipulse injection parameters for a subset of a plurality of multipulse injection events.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the subset comprises a one multipulse injection event in every 1000 or more multipulse injection events.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the electronic control system is configured to:

obtain an injection drain quantity of the pilot pulse and the main pulse in the common rail; and

calculate the injected fuel quantity based on the pressure change in the common rail and the injection drain quantity.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the normal multipulse injection parameters include a post pulse, and the modified multipulse injection parameters omit the post pulse.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the modified multipulse injection parameters increase an amount of fuel injected by a main pulse to compensate for the temporary omission of the post pulse.
