Abstract

Decentralized computer systems and methods are disclosed for efficient transaction dispute management using blockchain. One method includes: receiving transaction information of a transaction, wherein the transaction information includes (1) an identifier of an issuer of a payment source account, (2) an identifier of an acquirer of a payment account of a merchant, and (3) the amount of resources to be applied in the transaction; generating a blockchain entry that stores the received transaction information in a shared ledger to participants of the blockchain; receiving in the shared ledger, from a participant, (1) an indication of a dispute of the transaction information, and (2) a proposed change to the transaction information; prompting the participants of the blockchain to respond to the indication of the dispute; if one of the participants denies the proposed change, executing a dispute settlement process to determine a revised transaction information.

Claims (91)

1. A computer-implemented method of efficient transaction dispute management using blockchain, the method comprising:

receiving, by a blockchain server, dispute information for a dispute from an issuer of a payment source account of a consumer for applying resources to a transaction;

encrypting, by the blockchain server, the dispute information using a cryptographic key, wherein permissioned participants of the dispute possess corresponding private keys;

generating, by the blockchain server, a blockchain entry into a blockchain that stores the encrypted dispute information to the blockchain, the blockchain being accessible to the permissioned participants of the blockchain and rendered immutable to prevent changes to the blockchain entry;

prompting, by the blockchain server, an acquirer of a payment account of a merchant for depositing the applied resources for the transaction to respond to the dispute information by accepting or rejecting a proposed change to the transaction information;

executing, by the blockchain server, a dispute settlement process by executing a smart contract using one or more terms of the smart contract stored as attributes of the transaction on the blockchain;

determining, by the blockchain server, a first dispute resolution based on executing the smart contract using one or more terms of the smart contract stored as attributes of the transaction on the blockchain;

encrypting, by the blockchain server, the first dispute resolution using a second cryptographic key, wherein the permissioned participants of the dispute possess corresponding private keys; and

generating, by the blockchain server, an additional blockchain entry that stores the first dispute resolution to the blockchain.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

prompting the permissioned participants of the blockchain to respond to the additional blockchain entry that stores the first dispute resolution by accepting or rejecting the revised transaction information.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

based on receiving, from one of the permissioned participants of the blockchain, a rejection of the additional blockchain entry that stores the first dispute resolution, transmitting, to a server for a payment network used in the payment transaction, the additional blockchain entry that stores the first dispute resolution, to prompt a second dispute resolution.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating, by the blockchain server, a data structure in the blockchain to form an electronic contract governing the transaction, wherein the data structure includes fields for entering terms of the electronic contract;

receiving, by the blockchain server, one or more of the transaction information and proposed changes to the transaction information into the fields of the generated data structure;

identifying one or more disputed transaction information based on the received dispute information; and

executing a computerized transaction protocol to resolve the disputed transaction information, based on predetermined rules for determining a veracity of a disputed transaction information.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the dispute information includes: (1) an indication of a dispute of the transaction information, (2) the proposed change to the transaction information, and (3) an indication of an entity from which the dispute information was received.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the transaction information further includes, one or more of:

an identifier of the merchant;

an identifier of the consumer;

an itemization of the goods and/or services transacted for;

any geographical and/or temporal information of the transaction;

any taxes, tips, and/or gratuities;

any discounts, coupons, reductions;

any fees directed towards acquirers, issuers, payment networks;

currency exchange rates; and

any other attributes of the transaction.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the permissioned participants comprise one or more of the consumer, the merchant, the issuer, and the acquirer.

8. A device comprising:

a memory configured to store instructions; and

one or more processors configured to execute the instructions to perform operations comprising:

receiving, by a blockchain server, dispute information for a dispute from an issuer of a payment source account of a consumer for applying resources to a transaction;

encrypting, by the blockchain server, the dispute information using a cryptographic key, wherein permissioned participants of the dispute possess corresponding private keys;

generating, by the blockchain server, a blockchain entry into a blockchain that stores the encrypted dispute information to the blockchain, the blockchain being accessible to the permissioned participants of the blockchain and rendered immutable to prevent changes to the blockchain entry;

prompting, by the blockchain server, an acquirer of a payment account of a merchant for depositing the applied resources for the transaction to respond to the dispute information by accepting or rejecting a proposed change to the transaction information;

executing, by the blockchain server, a dispute settlement process by executing a smart contract using one or more terms of the smart contract stored as attributes of the transaction on the blockchain;

determining, by the blockchain server, a first dispute resolution based on executing the smart contract using one or more terms of the smart contract stored as attributes of the transaction on the blockchain;

encrypting, by the blockchain server, the first dispute resolution using a second cryptographic key, wherein the permissioned participants of the dispute possess corresponding private keys; and

generating, by the blockchain server, an additional blockchain entry that stores the first dispute resolution to the blockchain.

9. The device of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise:

prompting the permissioned participants of the blockchain to respond to the additional blockchain entry that stores the first dispute resolution by accepting or rejecting the revised transaction information.

10. The device of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise:

based on receiving, from one of the permissioned participants of the blockchain, a rejection of the additional blockchain entry that stores the first dispute resolution, transmitting, to a server for a payment network used in the payment transaction, the additional blockchain entry that stores the first dispute resolution, to prompt a second dispute resolution.

11. The device of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise:

generating, by the blockchain server, a data structure in the blockchain to form an electronic contract governing the transaction, wherein the data structure includes fields for entering terms of the electronic contract;

receiving one or more of the transaction information and proposed changes to the transaction information into the fields of the generated data structure;

identifying one or more disputed transaction information based on the received dispute information; and

executing a computerized transaction protocol to resolve the disputed transaction information, based on predetermined rules for determining a veracity of a disputed transaction information.

12. The device of claim 8 , wherein the dispute information includes: (1) an indication of a dispute of the transaction information, (2) the proposed change to the transaction information, and (3) an indication of an entity from which the dispute information was received.

13. The device of claim 8 , wherein the transaction information further includes, one or more of:

an identifier of the merchant;

an identifier of the consumer;

an itemization of the goods and/or services transacted for;

any geographical and/or temporal information of the transaction;

any taxes, tips, and/or gratuities;

any discounts, coupons, reductions;

any fees directed towards acquirers, issuers, payment networks;

currency exchange rates; and

any other attributes of the transaction.

14. The device of claim 8 , wherein the permissioned participants comprise one or more of the consumer, the merchant, the issuer, and the acquirer.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

receiving, by a blockchain server, dispute information for a dispute from an issuer of a payment source account of a consumer for applying resources to a transaction;

encrypting, by the blockchain server, the dispute information using a cryptographic key, wherein permissioned participants of the dispute possess corresponding private keys;

generating, by the blockchain server, a blockchain entry into a blockchain that stores the encrypted dispute information to the blockchain, the blockchain being accessible to the permissioned participants of the blockchain and rendered immutable to prevent changes to the blockchain entry;

prompting, by the blockchain server, an acquirer of a payment account of a merchant for depositing the applied resources for the transaction to respond to the dispute information by accepting or rejecting a proposed change to the transaction information;

executing, by the blockchain server, a dispute settlement process by executing a smart contract using one or more terms of the smart contract stored as attributes of the transaction on the blockchain;

determining, by the blockchain server, a first dispute resolution based on executing the smart contract using one or more terms of the smart contract stored as attributes of the transaction on the blockchain;

encrypting, by the blockchain server, the first dispute resolution using a second cryptographic key, wherein the permissioned participants of the dispute possess corresponding private keys; and

generating, by the blockchain server, an additional blockchain entry that stores the first dispute resolution to the blockchain.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise:

prompting the permissioned participants of the blockchain to respond to the additional blockchain entry that stores the first dispute resolution by accepting or rejecting the revised transaction information.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise:

based on receiving, from one of the permissioned participants of the blockchain, a rejection of the additional blockchain entry that stores the first dispute resolution, transmitting, to a server for a payment network used in the payment transaction, the additional blockchain entry that stores the first dispute resolution, to prompt a second dispute resolution.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise:

generating, by the blockchain server, a data structure in the blockchain to form an electronic contract governing the transaction, wherein the data structure includes fields for entering terms of the electronic contract;

receiving one or more of the transaction information and proposed changes to the transaction information into the fields of the generated data structure;

identifying one or more disputed transaction information based on the received dispute information; and

executing a computerized transaction protocol to resolve the disputed transaction information, based on predetermined rules for determining a veracity of a disputed transaction information.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the dispute information includes: (1) an indication of a dispute of the transaction information, (2) the proposed change to the transaction information, and (3) an indication of an entity from which the dispute information was received.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the transaction information further includes, one or more of:

an identifier of the merchant;

an identifier of the consumer;

an itemization of the goods and/or services transacted for;

any geographical and/or temporal information of the transaction;

any taxes, tips, and/or gratuities;

any discounts, coupons, reductions;

any fees directed towards acquirers, issuers, payment networks;

currency exchange rates; and

any other attributes of the transaction.
