Abstract

An apparatus for controlling an end-effector assembly is provided. The apparatus includes a elongated element configured to engage the end-effector assembly and a drive assembly. A first motion transfer mechanism is disposed at an end of the elongated element. The first motion transfer mechanism is configured to transfer a rotational motion of the elongated element to a motion of the end-effector assembly. A second motion transfer mechanism is disposed at the second end of the elongated element. The second motion transfer mechanism is configured to transfer a motion of the drive assembly to the rotational motion of the elongated element.

Claims (30)

1. A robotic surgical instrument, comprising:

an end-effector;

a tube extending along an axis between a proximal end and a distal end, the end effector pivotably coupled to the distal end of the tube and configured to pivot about a second axis perpendicular to the axis, a gear fixed to an outer surface of the proximal end of the tube; and

a second tube extending between a second proximal end and a second distal end and nested coaxially with the tube, the second distal end coupled with the end effector,

wherein rotation of the gear rotates the tube about the axis and pivots a working member of the end effector about the second axis.

2. The robotic surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a second gear fixed to an outer surface of the second proximal end of the second tube.

3. The robotic surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein rotation of the second gear rotates the second tube about the axis and pivots a second working member of the end effector about the second axis.

4. The robotic surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the end-effector comprises a blade.

5. The robotic surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the end-effector is configured to cauterize a tissue.

6. The robotic surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein one or both of the tube and the second tube comprises a flexible portion.

7. The robotic surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein the flexible portion allows flexion in a direction perpendicular to the axis and is configured to transfer rotational motion.

8. The robotic surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising means for pivoting the end-effector about a third axis different than the first axis and the second axis.

9. The robotic surgical instrument of claim 8 , wherein the third axis is perpendicular to the second axis.

10. The robotic surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the second distal end of the second elongated element is coupled to the end-effector assembly via a gear.

11. A robotic surgical system, comprising:

a support arm; and

a surgical instrument coupled to the support arm, the surgical instrument comprising:

an end-effector;

a tube extending along an axis between a proximal end and a distal end, the end effector pivotably coupled to the distal end of the tube and configured to pivot about a second axis perpendicular to the axis, a gear fixed to an outer surface of the proximal end of the tube; and

a second tube extending between a second proximal end and a second distal end and nested coaxially with the tube, the second distal end coupled with the end effector,

wherein rotation of the gear rotates the tube about the axis and pivots a working member of the end effector about the second axis.

12. The robotic surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the surgical instrument is movably coupled to the support arm.

13. The robotic surgical system of claim 12 , wherein the support arm is a robotic arm configured to move in response to an input control signal received from an input device operated by a user.

14. The robotic surgical system of claim 11 , further comprising a second gear fixed to an outer surface of the second proximal end of the second tube.

15. The robotic surgical system of claim 14 , wherein rotation of the second gear rotates the second tube about the axis and pivots a second working member of the end effector about the second axis.

16. The robotic surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the end-effector comprises a blade.

17. The robotic surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the end-effector is configured to cauterize a tissue.

18. The robotic surgical system of claim 11 , wherein one or both of the tube and the second tube comprises a flexible portion, the flexible portion allowing flexion in a direction perpendicular to the axis and is configured to transfer rotational motion.

19. The robotic surgical system of claim 11 , further comprising means for pivoting the end-effector about a third axis different than the first axis and the second axis.

20. The robotic surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the second distal end of the second elongated element is coupled to the end-effector assembly via a gear.
