Abstract

Methods and systems for illuminating an occupied spaces are disclosed, including, in one general aspect, an illumination method for illuminating a space to be occupied by one or more occupants that includes driving a first illumination element designated as an illumination level element, driving a second illumination element designated as a biological element, and continuously adjusting the steps of driving the first illumination element and driving the second illumination element to continuously adjust illumination levels and biological effects over time. The step of continuously adjusting can adjust biological effects without significantly changing perceived illumination quality.

operative to drive the first illumination element designated as an illumination level element,

operative to drive the second illumination element designated as a biological element, and

operative to continuously adjust the driving of the first illumination element and the driving of the second illumination element to continuously adjust illumination levels and biological effects over time, while also implementing an energy efficiency function that changes over time.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller is further responsive to an illumination level control and a biological illumination control.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the control module includes software stored in a memory element and operative to run on a processor.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the control module includes a processor, software stored in a memory element and operative to run on the processor, power output circuitry responsive to the controller and operative to provide a drive signal on the first and second outputs to directly drive illumination elements on the first and second outputs.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the occupied space is an interior space with walls to reflect the illumination form the first and second illumination elements and thereby provide indirect light to the occupants.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller is specifically programmed based on characteristics of the occupied space.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller is programmed based on input from a calibration sensor deployed in the occupied space.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller is programmed based on input from a calibration sensor deployed in the occupied space in successive steps for successive area illumination elements.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller is programmed based on input from a multispectral calibration sensor deployed in the occupied space.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller receives a feedback signal from a sensor deployed in the occupied space.

11. The system of claim 1 further including a timer that is operative to adjust the biological and/or illumination levels over time.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein the first and second area illumination elements are selected based on characteristics of the occupied space.

13. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller includes a control law that is based on selected occupant photoreceptors.

14. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller includes a control law that is designed to influence an occupant circadian rhythm.

15. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller includes a control law that preferably adjusts light in wavelengths that contribute differently to biological illumination parameters and perceived visual brightness.

16. The system of claim 1 wherein the first area illumination element and the second area illumination element have different bandwidth characteristics and/or spectral characteristics.

17. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller is designed based on a computer-optimized illumination solution for positions of the illumination elements in the occupied space.

18. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller is field-updatable.

19. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller is further responsive to an occupancy sensor.

20. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller is further responsive to an occupancy indication that reports the presence of a particular individual and adjusts illumination parameters based on his or her presence.

21. The system of claim 1 further including a first area illumination element having a first illumination profile operatively connected to the first driving output of the control module, and a second area illumination element having a second illumination profile operatively connected to the second driving output of the control module.

22. The system of claim 21 further including further area illumination elements that are controlled together with the first and second area illumination elements.

23. The system of claim 22 wherein the system controls a plurality of area illumination elements together in a single fixture.

24. The system of claim 22 wherein the system controls a plurality of area illumination elements together in a plurality of fixtures.

25. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller is operative to adjust biological effects without significantly changing perceived illumination quality.

26. An illumination method for illuminating an occupied space to be occupied by one or more occupants, comprising:

driving a first illumination element designated as an illumination level element,

driving a second illumination element designated as a biological element,

continuously adjusting the steps of driving the first illumination element and driving the second illumination element to continuously adjust illumination levels and biological effects over time, and

adjusting the steps of driving the first illumination element and driving the second illumination element in response to a change in conditions relating to energy efficiency.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein step of continuously adjusting adjusts biological effects without significantly changing perceived illumination quality.
