Abstract

A device may determine a geographical location and direction of a vehicle traveling on a highway, street or road, the vehicle having a known height. A device may determine the presence of a nearby overhead hazard toward which the vehicle is traveling. A device may retrieve from a database a height of the nearby overhead hazard. A device may compare height of the nearby overhead hazard to the known height of the vehicle. A device may provide an audible warning to the driver that the overhead hazard is too low for the vehicle to safely pass.

Claims (69)

1 - 2 . (canceled)

3 . A system to warn a driver of a vehicle of an overhead hazard, the system comprising:

a processing circuitry;

a database storing locations and heights of overhead hazards;

a memory, the memory containing instructions that, when executed by the processing circuitry, configure the system to:

receive, from a GPS in communication with the system, a location of the vehicle, the vehicle having a known height;

retrieve, from the database, a location and height of an overhead hazard near the location of the vehicle;

when the overhead hazard is too low for the vehicle to safely pass below the overhead hazard:

provide, via an output device associated with the driver, a warning to the driver before the vehicle reaches the overhead hazard;

wherein

the database is configured to receive a location and height of a new overhead hazard from an other driver.

4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein

the system is further configured to:

receive, via an input device associated with the driver, the known height of the vehicle.

5 . The system of claim 3 , wherein

the warning to the driver is provided before the vehicle reaches a distance of 200 yards from the overhead hazard.

6 . The system of claim 3 , wherein

the system is further configured to:

determine the height of the new overhead hazard based on sensor readings from a sensor in communication with the system.

7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein

the sensor is mounted on the vehicle.

8 . The system of claim 3 , wherein

the database receives the location and height of the new overhead hazard when the other driver inputs, via an input device associated with the other driver, the location and height of the new overhead hazard into the associated database.

9 . The system of claim 3 , wherein

the database automatically receives the location and height of the new overhead hazard when the location and height of the new overhead hazard are determined by an other system associated with the other driver.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein

the other system determines the location of the new overhead hazard based on location data from a GPS in communication with the other system;

the other system determines the height of the new overhead hazard based on height data from a sensor in communication with the other system; and

the sensor is mounted on an other vehicle associated with the other driver.

11 . A method of warning a driver of a vehicle of an overhead hazard, the method comprising steps of:

mounting a sensor on the vehicle, the sensor configured to measure a height difference between the sensor and an overhead hazard;

receiving, from a GPS, a location of the vehicle, the vehicle having a known height;

retrieving, from a database, a location and height of overhead hazards near the location of the vehicle;

when a given overhead hazard is too low for the vehicle to safely pass below the overhead hazard:

providing, via an output device associated with the driver, a warning to the driver before the vehicle reaches the given overhead hazard; and

wherein

the database is configured to receive a location and height of a new overhead hazard from an other driver.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein

the warning to the driver is provided before the vehicle reaches a distance of 200 yards from the overhead hazard.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein

the database receives the location and height of the new overhead hazard when the other driver inputs, via an input device associated with the other driver, the location and height of the new overhead hazard into the database.

14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein

the database automatically receives the location and height of the new overhead hazard when the location and height of the new overhead hazard is determined by a system associated with the other driver.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein,

the system determines the location of the new overhead hazard based on location data from a GPS in communication with the system;

the system determines the height of the new overhead hazard based on height data from a sensor in communication with the system; and

the sensor is mounted on an other vehicle associated with the other driver.

16 . The method of claim 14 , wherein

the input device is a smart device; and

method steps are performed via an application on the smart device.

17 . A non-transitory computer readable medium having stored thereon instructions for causing a processing circuitry to execute a process, the process comprising:

receiving, from a GPS, a location of the vehicle, the vehicle having a known height;

retrieving, from a database, a location and height of an overhead hazard near the location of the vehicle;

when the overhead hazard is too low for the vehicle to safely pass below the overhead hazard:

providing, via an output device associated with the driver, a warning to the driver before the vehicle reaches the overhead hazard;

wherein

the database is configured to receive a location and height of a new overhead hazard from an other driver.

18 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein

the warning to the driver is provided before the vehicle reaches a distance of 200 yards from the overhead hazard.

19 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the process further comprises steps of:

determining a height of a new overhead hazard based on sensor readings from a sensor in communication with the system.

20 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein

the database receives the location and height of the new overhead hazard when the other driver inputs, via an input device associated with the other driver, the location and height of the new overhead hazard into the database.

21 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein

the database automatically receives the location and height of the new overhead hazard when the location and height of the new overhead hazard is determined by a system associated with the other driver.

22 . The system of claim 21 , wherein

the system determines the location of the new overhead hazard based on location data from a GPS in communication with the other system;

the system determines the height of the new overhead hazard based on height data from a sensor in communication with the other system; and

the sensor is mounted on an other vehicle associated with the other driver.
