Abstract

A foil displacement system includes one or more foils that can be deployed and stowed. When deployed, each foil can exert downforce or uplift depending on its orientation. For example, each foil may be positioned to have an angle of attack that creates a downward force effectively transmitted to the hull to pull the hull deeper within the water to, for example, create a larger wake. Use of the foil displacement system can enhance or replace the use of a ballast tank system, can be integrated into a new boat or retrofitted to existing boats, can be electronically or manually positioned, can enhance activities such as wake surfing, wake boarding, water skiing or other similar or related water sports.

Claims (26)

1. A method of controlling one or more foils of a water sports boat including a hull, wherein movement of the water sports boat with respect to water causes the one or more foils in certain positions to exert a downforce that is transmitted to the hull, the method comprising:

receiving a mode-selection signal responsive to a driver of the water sports boat interacting with a user interface to indicate a mode corresponding to one or more configurations for one or more foil assemblies, each of the one or more foil assemblies including a foil and a spar, each foil having a stowed position and a deployed position, the deployed position including one or more downforce positions where the foil is positioned at a downforce angle of attack to exert a downforce through the spar to the hull of the water sports boat as the hull moves through water; and

in response to receiving the mode-selection signal, activating one or more actuators operably connected to the one or more foil assemblies to move the one or more foils to adjust angles of attack of the one or more foils according to the one or more configurations.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising activating the one or more actuators operably connected to the one or more foil assemblies to move the one or more foils away from the stowed position and toward the deployed position.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mode is one of a plurality of modes.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mode corresponds to wake surfing.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mode corresponds to wakeboarding.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mode corresponds to a rider profile.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mode corresponds to a wake size.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising monitoring a speed of the hull in the water and, when the speed reaches a threshold, activating the one or more actuators operably connected to the one or more foil assemblies to move the one or more foils to adjust angles of attack of the one or more foils.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising monitoring a depth of the hull in the water and, when the depth reaches a threshold, activating the one or more actuators operably connected to the one or more foil assemblies to move the one or more foils away from the deployed position and toward the stowed position.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising monitoring a location of the water sports boat and, when the water sports boat is at a wake size restriction zone, activating the one or more actuators operably connected to the one or more foil assemblies to move the one or more foils to adjust angles of attack of the one or more foils.

11. The method of claim 1 , monitoring a location of a rider in the water and, when the location of the rider moves from one of a port side or a starboard side of the water sports boat to the other of the port side or the starboard side of the water sports boat, activating the one or more actuators operably connected to the one or more foil assemblies to move the one or more foils to adjust angles of attack of the one or more foils.

12. The method of claim 1 , monitoring a feedback sensor operably connected to the one or more foil assemblies and, when the feedback sensor senses a resistance on the one or more foil assemblies has reached a threshold, activating the one or more actuators operably connected to the one or more foil assemblies to move the one or more foils to adjust angles of attack of the one or more foils.

13. The method of claim 1 , monitoring a feedback sensor operably connected to the one or more foil assemblies and, when the feedback sensor senses a resistance on the one or more foil assemblies has reached a threshold, activating the one or more actuators operably connected to the one or more foil assemblies to move the one or more foils away from the deployed position and toward the stowed position.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more foil assemblies comprises a forward foil assembly, a port aft foil assembly, and a starboard aft foil assembly.

15. A method of controlling one or more foils of a water sports boat including a hull, wherein movement of the water sports boat with respect to water causes the one or more foils in certain positions to exert a downforce that is transmitted to the hull, the method comprising:

receiving a mode-selection signal responsive to a driver of the water sports boat interacting with a user interface to indicate a mode corresponding to one or more configurations for a forward foil assembly including a foil and a spar, the foil having a stowed position and a deployed position, the deployed position including one or more downforce positions where the foil is positioned at a downforce angle of attack to exert a downforce through the spar to the hull of the water sports boat as the hull moves through water; and

in response to receiving the mode-selection signal, activating one or more actuators operably connected to the forward foil assembly to move the foil to adjust an angle of attack of the foil according to the one or more configurations.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising activating the one or more actuators operably connected to the forward foil assembly to move the foil away from the stowed position and toward the deployed position.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the mode corresponds to wake surfing.

18. The method of claim 15 , monitoring a location of a rider in the water and, when the location of the rider moves from one of a port side or a starboard side of the water sports boat to the other of the port side or the starboard side of the water sports boat, activating the one or more actuators operably connected to the forward foil assembly to move the foil to adjust an angle of attack of the foil.

19. A method of controlling one or more foils of a water sports boat including a hull, wherein movement of the water sports boat with respect to water causes the one or more foils in certain positions to exert a downforce that is transmitted to the hull, the method comprising:

receiving a mode-selection signal responsive to a driver of the water sports boat interacting with a user interface to indicate a mode corresponding to one or more configurations for a forward foil assembly, a port aft foil assembly, and a starboard aft foil assembly, each of the forward foil assembly, port aft foil assembly, and starboard aft foil assembly including a foil and a spar, each foil having a stowed position and a deployed position, the deployed position including one or more downforce positions where the foil is positioned at a downforce angle of attack to exert a downforce through the spar to the hull of the water sports boat as the hull moves through water; and

in response to receiving the mode-selection signal, activating one or more actuators operably connected to the forward foil assembly, port aft foil assembly, and starboard aft foil assembly to move the foils to adjust angles of attack of the foils according to the one or more configurations.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the mode corresponds to wake surfing.
