Abstract

A method for preventing digital content misuse can include detecting, by a client-side computing device, that the client-side computing device is paired to a viewing device such that, after being paired, the client-side computing device can cause digital content received from a remote server to be presented on a display of the viewing device; after detecting that the client-side computing device is paired to the viewing device, detecting, by the client-side computing device, that the client-side computing device has been unpaired from the viewing device; and in response to detecting that the client-side computing device has been unpaired from the viewing device, executing a remedial action.

Claims (29)

1 . A system for confirming an authorized user presence, the system comprising:

a client-side computing device configured to present sonic signals during access of digital content;

a user device configured to detect the sonic signals presented by the client-side computing device and transmit confirmation messages when the sonic signals are detected;

a server configured to:

receive the confirmation messages from the user device;

determine a number of unconfirmed sonic signals that were not detected by the user device; and

execute a remedial action when the number of unconfirmed sonic signals exceeds a threshold.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the sonic signals comprise audio signals with embedded codes that are included in the confirmation messages transmitted by the user device.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the server is further configured to transmit a schedule for presenting the sonic signals to the client-side computing device.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the remedial action comprises disabling access to the digital content on the client-side computing device.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the user device enters a sonic signal detection mode upon detecting a visible code presented on the client-side computing device.

6 . A method for confirming an authorized user presence, the method comprising:

presenting, by a client-side computing device, sonic signals during access of digital content;

detecting, by a user device, the presented sonic signals;

transmitting, by the user device, confirmation messages when the sonic signals are detected;

determining, by a server, a number of unconfirmed sonic signals that were not detected by the user device; and

executing, by the server, a remedial action when the number of unconfirmed sonic signals exceeds a threshold.

7 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising embedding codes in the sonic signals that are included in the confirmation messages transmitted by the user device.

8 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising transmitting a schedule for presenting the sonic signals from the server to the client-side computing device.

9 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the remedial action comprises disabling access to the digital content on the client-side computing device.

10 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising entering a sonic signal detection mode on the user device upon detecting a visible code presented on the client-side computing device.

11 . A non-transitory machine-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause a server to:

receive confirmation messages from a user device indicating detection of sonic signals presented by a client-side computing device during access of digital content;

determine a number of unconfirmed sonic signals that were not detected by the user device; and

execute a remedial action when the number of unconfirmed sonic signals exceeds a threshold.

12 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the sonic signals comprise audio signals with embedded codes that are included in the confirmation messages transmitted by the user device.

13 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 11 , storing additional instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the server to transmit a schedule for presenting the sonic signals to the client-side computing device.

14 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the remedial action comprises causing disabling of access to the digital content on the client-side computing device.

The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 11 , storing additional instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the server to enable the user device to enter a sonic signal detection mode upon detecting a visible code presented on the client-side computing device.
