Abstract

A method for preventing digital content misuse can include detecting, by a client-side computing device, that the client-side computing device is paired to a viewing device such that, after being paired, the client-side computing device can cause digital content received from a remote server to be presented on a display of the viewing device; after detecting that the client-side computing device is paired to the viewing device, detecting, by the client-side computing device, that the client-side computing device has been unpaired from the viewing device; and in response to detecting that the client-side computing device has been unpaired from the viewing device, executing a remedial action.

Claims (26)

1 . A system for detecting nearby devices, the system comprising:

a client-side computing device configured to: present digital content; detect mobile computing devices within a geographic proximity; and determine a detected device count;

a server configured to: receive the detected device count from the client-side computing device; compare the detected device count to a threshold authorized user count associated with the digital content; and execute a remedial action when the detected device count exceeds the threshold authorized user count.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the client-side computing device detects the mobile computing devices by scanning for wireless signals.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the remedial action comprises disabling access to the digital content on the client-side computing device.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the threshold authorized user count is determined based on a number of known residents associated with the client-side computing device.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the threshold authorized user count is determined based on a digital content license assigned to a user account associated with the client-side computing device.

6 . A method for detecting nearby devices, the method comprising:

presenting digital content on a client-side computing device;

detecting mobile computing devices within a geographic proximity of the client-side computing device;

determining a detected device count based on the detecting;

transmitting the detected device count from the client-side computing device to a server;

comparing the detected device count to a threshold authorized user count associated with the digital content; and

executing a remedial action when the detected device count exceeds the threshold authorized user count.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein detecting the mobile computing devices comprises scanning for wireless signals by the client-side computing device.

8 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the remedial action comprises disabling access to the digital content on the client-side computing device.

9 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising determining the threshold authorized user count based on a number of known residents associated with the client-side computing device.

10 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising determining the threshold authorized user count based on a digital content license assigned to a user account associated with the client-side computing device.

11 . A non-transitory machine-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause a server to:

receive a detected device count from a client-side computing device, the detected device count indicating mobile computing devices detected within a geographic proximity of the client-side computing device during presentation of digital content;

compare the detected device count to a threshold authorized user count associated with the digital content; and

execute a remedial action when the detected device count exceeds the threshold authorized user count.

12 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the mobile computing devices are detected by the client-side computing device scanning for wireless signals.

13 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the remedial action comprises causing disabling of access to the digital content on the client-side computing device.

14 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 11 , storing additional instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the server to determine the threshold authorized user count based on a number of known residents associated with the client-side computing device.

15 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 11 , storing additional instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the server to determine the threshold authorized user count based on a digital content license assigned to a user account associated with the client-side computing device.
