Abstract

A communication system is described where multiple communication networks are simultaneously accessible from a plurality of fixed and/or mobile communication devices. A Master and Slave hierarchy is implemented among the communication devices to improve communication properties on one or multiple networks. A network system controller is implemented to select the network with optimal communication characteristics for subsets of communication devices as well as assigning Master status to a communication device within these subsets.

Claims (10)

1. A method for controlling communications in a communication system, the method comprising:

obtaining, at a first device of a plurality of first devices in the communication system, a control signal from a second device in the communication system, the control signal generated by the second device, the control signal specifying one of a plurality of distinct radiation patterns for a modal antenna associated with the first device as a selected radiation pattern for the modal antenna, wherein the selected radiation pattern is selected by the second device; and

controlling the modal antenna of the first device to operate in the selected radiation pattern to communicate with the second device over a first communication network, the second device being configured to communicate over the first communication network and a second communication network, the second communication network having a distinct protocol relative to the first communication network, the plurality of first devices being incapable of communicating over the second communication network, the second device being operable to coordinate communication of the plurality of first devices with the second communication network by determining the selected radiation pattern for each first device of the plurality of first devices.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first communication network is a wireless local area network.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second communication network is a cellular communication network.

4. A method for controlling communications in a communication system, the method comprising:

obtaining, at a first device of a plurality of first devices in the communication system, a control signal from a second device in the communication system, the control signal generated by the second device, the control signal specifying one of a plurality of distinct radiation patterns for a modal antenna associated with the first device as a selected radiation pattern for the modal antenna, wherein the selected radiation pattern is selected by the second device; and

controlling the modal antenna of the first device to operate in the selected radiation pattern to communicate with a third device of the communication system over a first communication network, the second device being configured to communicate over the first communication network and a second communication network, the second communication network having a distinct protocol relative to the first communication network, the plurality of first devices being incapable of communicating over the second communication network, the second device being operable to coordinate communication of the plurality of first devices with the second communication network by determining the selected radiation pattern for each first device of the plurality of first devices.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the first communication network is a wireless local area network.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the second communication network is a cellular communication network.
