Abstract

A cadaverous heart model and methods of making and using the cadaverous heart model are provided. The cadaverous heart model may remain within the chest cavity of the cadaver (in situ) or may be explanted (ex vivo). The efferent and afferent vessels of the heart are ligated and one or more of the heart chambers are cannulated to permit the infusion of fluid. Video cameras or other means for visualizing the flow of fluid and opening and closing of valves are applied internally or proximally externally. Pumps and inflatable bladders are used to effect the flow of fluid within the heart model.

Claims (18)

. A portable testing system comprising a pump, a heart valve, a vessel, a fluid, and a cadaveric tissue, and not comprising a whole cadaver, wherein the vessel is in fluidic communication with the pump and the cadaveric tissue.

. The portable system of claim 1 , wherein the heart valve is a synthetic aorta valve.

. The portable system of claim 1 , wherein the pump is a pulsatile pump.

. The portable system of claim 3 , wherein pump is a hand pump.

. The portable system of claim 1 , wherein the vessel is a cadaveric artery.

. The portable system of claim 1 , wherein the vessel is a synthetic tube.

. The portable system of claim 1 , wherein the heart valve is located within the vessel.

. The portable system of claim 1 , wherein the cadaveric tissue is selected from the group consisting of head, arm, leg, heart, kidney, and liver.

. The portable system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid is selected from the group consisting of blood, clear fluid, expired blood, animal blood, simulated blood, a liquid containing a viscosifier, and a liquid containing a dispersant.

. A method for testing an implantable medical device comprising flowing fluid through the medical device into a cadaveric tissue; examining the cadaveric tissue; and determining the effect of the medical device on the cadaveric tissue.

. The method of claim 10 , wherein the fluid is selected from the group consisting of blood, clear fluid, expired blood, animal blood, simulated blood, a liquid containing a viscosifier, and a liquid containing a dispersant.

. The method of claim 11 comprising controlling the temperature of the fluid.

. The method of claim 10 comprising controlling the pressure of the fluid.

. The method of claim 10 , wherein the fluid is flowed through a tubular vessel that is in fluidic communication with the implantable medical device and the cadaveric tissue.

. The method of claim 14 , wherein the cadaveric tissue is an ex vivo cadaveric tissue selected from the group consisting of head, arm, leg, heart, kidney, and liver.

. The method of claim 14 , wherein the tubular vessel is a natural blood vessel or a synthetic tube.

. The method of claim 10 , wherein the implantable medical device is a heart valve.

. The method of claim 17 , wherein the implantable medical device is an artificial aorta valve.
