Abstract

In an embodiment, a method of manufacturing customized ceramic labial/lingual orthodontic brackets by additive manufacturing may comprise measuring dentition data of a profile of teeth of a patient, based on the dentition data, creating a three dimensional computer-assisted design (3D CAD) model of the patient's teeth, and saving the 3D CAD model, designing a virtual 3D CAD bracket structure model for a single labial or lingual bracket structure based upon said 3D CAD model, importing data related to the 3D CAD bracket structure model into an additive manufacturing machine, and directly producing the bracket with the additive manufacturing machine by layer manufacturing from an inorganic material including at least one of a ceramic, a polymer-derived ceramic, and a polymer-derived metal.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein modifying the 3D model of the labial/lingual bracket structure further comprises modifying an inclination of the slot and/or base of the 3D model of the labial/lingual bracket structure relative to the surface of the tooth.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to perform:

rearranging one or more teeth in the 3D model of the patient's teeth to represent a desired treatment outcome.

9. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an additive manufacturing device configured to produce the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket using the 3D model of the labial/lingual bracket structure.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the additive manufacturing device is configured to produce the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket using lithography-based digital light processing.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the additive manufacturing device is a ceramic slurry-based additive manufacturing machine.

12. At least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, causes the at least one processor to perform:

accessing a 3D model of a patient's teeth;

accessing a 3D model of a labial/lingual bracket structure indicating a design of a customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket, wherein the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket comprises a base, a body, and a slot;

positioning the 3D model of the labial/lingual bracket structure on a surface of a tooth at a first position in the 3D model of the patient's teeth, wherein the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket is customized for the first position;

receiving an input indicating a change in the first position of the 3D model of the labial/lingual bracket structure on the surface of the tooth at a second position that is different from the first position in the 3D model of the patient's teeth; and

in response to receiving the input indicating the change in the first position of the 3D model of the labial/lingual bracket structure on the surface of the tooth at the second position, modifying the 3D model of the labial/lingual bracket structure based on the change in the first position of the 3D model of the labial/lingual bracket structure on the surface of the tooth at the second position, wherein the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket is customized for the second position.
