Abstract

Methods, systems, and computer readable media may be operable to facilitate an allocation of one or more channels to one or more preferred stations. An access point may be configured to allocate the use of one or more sub-bands of a frequency spectrum to one or more stations. One or more sub-bands may be assigned to one or more preferred stations, thereby creating a plurality of virtual networks provided by the access point. The virtual networks provided by the access point may support different authentication and encryption options. The access point may simultaneously communicate with a plurality of stations by simultaneously transmitting and/or receiving communications over the different sub-bands.

Claims (36)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving wireless communications at an access point from respective stations, wherein the access point is configured to communicate with the stations over a plurality of sub-bands of a frequency spectrum;

retrieving at least one parameter from each of the respective wireless communications, wherein each retrieved parameter relates to a respective one of the stations;

selecting an available sub-band of the frequency spectrum for each of the stations;

outputting a respective instruction to each of the stations, wherein each instruction instructs a respective one of the stations to communicate with the access point over a respective one of the selected available sub-bands of the frequency spectrum; and

simultaneously communicating with at least two of the stations over two different ones of the sub-bands of the frequency spectrum.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the instructions includes configuration information associated with the selected available sub-bands of the frequency spectrum.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one parameter includes information regarding capability of each of stations to accommodate sub-band communication on the sub-bands.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving at the stations video services, data services, or voice services through the access point.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the frequency spectrum over which the access point is configured to communicate is partitioned into at least two sub-bands, and the access point is configured to simultaneously communicate with the stations over the at least two sub-bands.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sub-bands of the frequency spectrum have the same or different frequency bandwidths.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein certain stations are instructed to communication over a narrower sub-band than a sub-band over which other stations are designated for communicating.

8 . An access point comprising:

an interface configured to receive wireless communications from respective stations, wherein the access point is configured to communicate with the stations over a plurality of sub-bands of a frequency spectrum; and

one or more modules configured to:

retrieve at least one parameter from each of the respective wireless communications, wherein each retrieved parameter relates to a respective one of the stations;

select an available sub-band of the frequency spectrum for each of the stations;

output a respective instruction to each of the stations, wherein each instruction instructs a respective one of the stations to communicate with the access point over a respective one of the selected available sub-bands of the frequency spectrum; and

simultaneously communicate with two of the stations over two different ones of the sub-bands of the frequency spectrum.

9 . The access point of claim 8 , wherein the instructions includes configuration information associated with the selected available sub-bands of the frequency spectrum.

10 . The access point of claim 8 , wherein the at least one parameter includes information regarding capability of each of the stations to accommodate sub-band communication on the sub-bands.

11 . The access point of claim 8 , wherein the frequency spectrum over which the access point is configured to communicate is partitioned into at least two sub-bands, and the access point is configured to simultaneously communicate with the stations over the at least two sub-bands.

12 . The access point of claim 8 , wherein the sub-bands of the frequency spectrum have the same or different frequency bandwidths.

13 . The access point of claim 8 , wherein an access point may include a gateway, a cable modem, a wireless router including an embedded cable modem, a mobile hot-spot router, a multimedia over coaxial alliance (MoCA) node, or a wireless extender.

14 . The access point of claim 8 , wherein the stations may include televisions, mobile devices, tablets, set-top boxes, computers, thermostats, or sensors.

15 . One or more non-transitory computer readable media having instructions operable to cause one or more processors to perform the operations comprising:

receiving wireless communications at an access point from respective stations, wherein the access point is configured to communicate with the stations over a plurality of sub-bands of a frequency spectrum;

retrieving at least one parameter from each of the respective wireless communications, wherein each retrieved parameter relates to a respective one of the stations;

selecting an available sub-band of the frequency spectrum for each of the stations;

outputting a respective instruction to each of the stations, wherein each instruction instructs a respective one of the stations to communicate with the access point over a respective one of the selected available sub-bands of the frequency spectrum; and

simultaneously communicating with two of the stations over two different ones of the sub-bands of the frequency spectrum.

16 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15 , wherein the instructions include configuration information associated with the selected available sub-bands of the frequency spectrum.

17 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15 , wherein the at least one station parameter includes information regarding capability of each of the stations to accommodate sub-band communication on the sub-bands.

18 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15 , further comprising: receiving at the stations video services, data services, or voice services through the access point.

19 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15 , wherein the sub-bands of the frequency spectrum have the same or different frequency bandwidths.

20 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15 , wherein certain stations of the stations are instructed to communication over a narrower sub-band than a sub-band over which other stations are designated for communicating.
