Abstract

Systems, methods, and computer-readable media are described for compact radar systems. In some examples, a compact radar system can include a first set of transmit antennas, a second set of receive antennas, one or more processors, and at least one computer-readable storage medium storing computer-executable instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the radar system to coordinate digital beam steering of the first set of transmit antennas and the second set of receive antennas, and coordinate digital beam forming with one or more of the second set of receive antennas to detect one or more objects within a distance of the radar system.

Claims (36)

1. A method comprising:

deploying a radar system configured to detect one or more objects within a range of the radar system, the radar system comprising a set of patch antennas having a first set of transmit antennas and a second set of receive antennas, wherein an electromagnetic signal isolation structure configured between the first set of transmit antennas and the second set of receive antennas comprises at least one fin that isolates electromagnetic signals between the first set of transmit antennas and the second set of receive antennas and/or dissipates heat, and wherein the radar system is configured to coordinate (a) digital beam steering of the first set of transmit antennas and the second set of receive antennas and (b) digital beam forming at the first set of transmit antennas and the second set of receive antennas to detect the one or more objects;

transmitting, using the first set of transmit antennas, an electromagnetic signal;

receiving, using the second set of receive antennas, a returned electromagnetic signal; and

detecting, based on the returned electromagnetic signal, an object.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting the object comprises determining at least one of an angle, a range, a radar cross section, and a velocity of the object relative to the radar system.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein coordinating (a) digital beam steering and (b) digital beam forming comprises suppressing at least one of signal noise, clutter, jamming at the radar system, and space time adaptive processing from among the second set of receive antennas.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein received signal reflections comprise at least a portion of the returned electromagnetic signal.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising performing, using an RF channeling element associated with the radar system, one or more of heat dissipation, RF channel isolation, mechanical vibration reduction and wave propagation.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of patch antennas comprises patches with different resonances to increase bandwidth.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of patch antennas comprises a gap that separates patches of the set of patch antennas to reduce or eliminate loss.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of patch antennas comprises one or more of a stacked patch antenna structure and a use of at least one dummy patch antennas.

9. A radar system comprising:

one or more processors;

a set of patch antennas comprising a first set of transmit antennas and a second set of receive antennas;

one or more electromagnetic signal isolation structure configured between the first set of transmit antennas and the second set of receive antennas that isolate transmission signals from received signals, wherein the one or more electromagnetic signal isolation structure comprises at least one fin that isolates electromagnetic signals between the first set of transmit antennas and the second set of receive antennas and/or dissipates heat; and

a computer-readable storage device storing instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

coordinating (a) digital beam steering of the first set of transmit antennas and the second set of receive antennas and (b) digital beam forming at the first set of transmit antennas and the second set of receive antennas to detect an object;

transmitting, using the first set of transmit antennas, an electromagnetic signal;

receiving, using the second set of receive antennas, a returned electromagnetic signal; and

detecting, based on the returned electromagnetic signal, an object.

10. The radar system of claim 9 , wherein detecting the object comprises determining at least one of an angle, a range, a radar cross section, and a velocity of the object relative to the radar system.

11. The radar system of claim 9 , wherein coordinating (a) digital beam steering and (b) digital beam forming comprises suppressing, using the one or more processors, at least one of signal noise, clutter, jamming at the radar system, and space time adaptive processing from among the second set of receive antennas.

12. The radar system of claim 9 , wherein a received signal reflections comprise at least a portion of the returned electromagnetic signal.

13. The radar system of claim 9 , further comprising performing, using an RF channeling element associated with the radar system, one or more of heat dissipation, RF channel isolation, mechanical vibration reduction and wave propagation.

14. The radar system of claim 9 , wherein the set of patch antennas comprises patches with different resonances to increase bandwidth.

15. The radar system of claim 9 , wherein the set of patch antennas comprises a gap that separates patches of the set of patch antennas to reduce or eliminate loss.

16. The radar system of claim 9 , wherein the set of patch antennas comprises one or more of a stacked patch antenna structure and a use of at least one dummy patch antennas.

17. A computer-readable storage device storing instructions which, when executed by one or more processors in communication with a set of patch antennas comprising a first set of transmit antennas and a second set of receive antennas, cause the one or more processors to be configured to:

coordinate (a) digital beam steering of the first set of transmit antennas and the second set of receive antennas and (b) digital beam forming at the first set of transmit antennas and the second set of receive antennas to detect an object;

transmit, using the first set of transmit antennas, an electromagnetic signal;
