Abstract

A system for determining a bacterial load of a target is provided. The system includes an adaptor for configuring a mobile communication device for tissue imaging and a mobile communication device. The adaptor includes a housing configured to be removably coupled to a mobile communication device and, an excitation light source for fluorescent imaging. The excitation light source is configured to emit light in one of ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared, and infrared ranges.

Claims (43)

1. An adaptor for configuring a mobile communication device for tissue imaging, the adaptor comprising:

a housing configured to be removably coupled to a mobile communication device;

an excitation light source configured to emit excitation light that elicits autofluorescence emissions from bacteria present in a tissue target in response to illumination of the tissue target by the excitation light; and

one or more light sources configured to elicit reflected red light and reflected green light from the target tissue indicative of oxygenation of the tissue target in response to illumination of the tissue target by the one or more light sources.

The adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the housing has a front wall and a rear wall, a space between the front wall and the rear wall being configured to receive a top portion of the mobile communication device having a camera lens when the housing is removably coupled to the mobile communication device.

3. The adaptor of claim 2 , wherein the housing further comprises an opening in the front wall, the opening configured to align with the camera lens of the mobile communication device when the adaptor is removably coupled to the mobile communication device.

4. The adaptor of claim 3 , further comprising an emissions filter configured to permit passage of emissions corresponding to bacterial autofluorescence to pass through the emissions filter, wherein the emissions filter is positioned within or over an opening in the front wall of the housing.

5. The adaptor of claim 4 , wherein the emissions filter is configured to permit passage of emissions having a wavelength of about 500 nm to about 550 nm and/or about 590 nm to about 690 nm.

6. The adaptor of claim 4 , wherein the emissions filter is configured to permit passage of emissions having a wavelength of about 450 nm to about 505 nm and/or about 590 nm to about 650 nm.

7. The adaptor of claim 4 , wherein the emissions filter is configured to permit passage of emissions having a wavelength of about 635+/−10 nm.

8. The adaptor of claim 1 , further comprising an emissions filter configured to block excitation light.

9. The adaptor of claim 1 , further comprising a triple band-pass filter configured to separate wavelength bands of blue, green, and red reflected light components of the tissue target.

The adaptor of claim 9 , wherein the triple band-pass filter is selectively movable between a position aligned with a camera lens of the mobile communication device when the housing is removably coupled to the mobile communication device and a position unaligned with the camera lens of the mobile communication device when the housing is removably coupled to the mobile communication device.

The adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the excitation light source configured to emit excitation light that elicits autofluorescence emissions from bacteria present in a tissue target includes two excitation light sources configured to emit excitation light that elicits autofluorescence emissions from bacteria present in the tissue target.

12. The adaptor of claim 11 , wherein each of the two excitation light sources is configured to emit excitation light having a wavelength between about 400 nm and about 450 nm.

13. The adaptor of claim 11 , wherein each of the two excitation light sources is configured to emit excitation light having a wavelength of 405 nm+20 nm.

The adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the excitation light source configured to emit excitation light that elicits autofluorescence emissions from bacteria present in a tissue target comprises a first excitation light source configured to emit a first excitation light at a first wavelength or wavelength band and further comprises a second excitation light source configured to emit a second excitation light at a second wavelength or wavelength band, wherein the first wavelength or wavelength band is different than the second wavelength or wavelength band.

The adaptor of claim 14 , wherein the first wavelength or wavelength band is between about 400 nm and 450 nm and the second wavelength or wavelength band is between about 450 nm and about 500 nm, about 500 nm about 550 nm, about 550 nm to about 600 nm, about 600 nm to about 650 nm, about 650 nm to about 700 nm, or about 700 nm to about 750 nm.

16. The adaptor of claim 14 , wherein, when emitting excitation light, the adaptor is configured to emit pulses of excitation light and cycle between the first wavelength or wavelength band and the second wavelength or wavelength band.

The adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the one or more light sources includes a white light source configured to emit white light to elicit reflection data indicative of one or more of size, shape, volume, topography, depth, area, blood, microvasculature, and granulation of the tissue target in response to illumination of the tissue target with the white light.

18. An adaptor for configuring a mobile communication device for tissue imaging, the adaptor comprising:

a housing having a front wall and a rear wall, a space between the front wall and the rear wall being configured to receive a portion of a mobile communication device when the housing is removably coupled to the mobile communication device, the housing further including an opening in the front wall of the housing, the opening configured to align with a camera lens of the mobile communication device when the housing is removably coupled to the mobile communication device;

a first excitation light source configured to emit excitation light at a first wavelength or wavelength band to elicit emission of bacterial autofluorescence from a tissue target in response to illumination of the tissue target by the excitation light;

a second excitation light source configured to emit excitation light at a second wavelength or wavelength band to elicit emission from one or more biomarkers associated with wound healing, wherein the first wavelength or wavelength band is different than the second wavelength or wavelength band;

a white light source configured to emit white light to elicit reflected light components of the tissue target; and

a multi-band transmission filter configured to separate the reflected light components of the tissue target into green wavelength bands and red wavelength bands associated with oxygenation of the tissue target.

19. The adaptor of claim 18 , wherein the first excitation light source comprises a first plurality of LEDs and the second excitation light source comprises a second plurality of LEDs.

20. The adaptor of claim 19 , wherein the first plurality of LEDs and the second plurality of LEDs are arranged in a ring.

21. The adaptor of claim 18 , wherein the first excitation light source is configured to emit excitation light having a wavelength of 405 nm+20 nm and the second excitation light source is configured to emit light in one of ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared, and infrared ranges.

22. The adaptor of claim 21 , wherein the second excitation light source is configured to emit green or red light.

23. The adaptor of claim 18 , wherein the multi-band transmission filter is positioned within or over the opening in the front wall of the housing.

24. The adaptor of claim 18 , further comprising a polarization filter.

25. The adaptor of claim 18 , further comprising a thermal imaging sensor.

26. A method of obtaining diagnostic data of a tissue target, the method comprising:

positioning an adaptor configured to be operatively associated with a mobile communication device relative to a tissue target;

illuminating the tissue target with excitation light emitted by an excitation light source of the adaptor, the excitation light source emitting at least one wavelength or wavelength band configured to cause at least one biomarker in the tissue target to fluoresce;

illuminating the tissue target with one or more light sources of the adaptor, the one or more light sources being configured to elicit reflected light components from the tissue target;

separating the reflected light components of the tissue target into reflected red light and reflected green light; and

determining oxygenation of the tissue target based on the reflected red light and the reflected green light.

27. The method of claim 26 , wherein illuminating the tissue target with the one or more light sources of the adaptor comprises illuminating the tissue target with a white light source to elicit the reflected light components of the tissue target.

28. The method of claim 26 , wherein separating the reflected light components of the tissue target into the reflected red light and the reflected green light comprises passing white light reflected from the tissue target through a triple bandpass filter.

29. The method of claim 26 , wherein illuminating the tissue target with excitation light emitted by the excitation light source comprises illuminating the tissue target with an excitation light source configured to emit excitation light in an ultraviolet range.

30. The method of claim 26 , wherein illuminating the tissue target with the excitation light emitted by the excitation light source comprises illuminating the tissue target with an excitation light source configured to emit excitation light having a wavelength of 405 nm+20 nm.
