Abstract

An apparatus includes an elongate thin film body extending from a first end to a second end. A plurality of electrodes is disposed on the thin film body. A plurality of electrode connection traces each coupled to a respective one of the electrodes. A plurality of attachment structures is placed at predetermined locations about the thin film body. An outer molding surrounds the thin film body. The attachment structures provide connection points for the outer molding, thus allowing for adhesion between the outer molding and the thin film body.

Claims (39)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a substrate that contains polyimide;

a plurality of electrodes disposed on the substrate, wherein the electrodes are configured to deliver electrical stimulation to a first side of the substrate;

a molding material disposed on a second side of the substrate opposite the first side; and

a plurality of attachment structures that protrude away from the substrate toward the second side, wherein each of the attachment structures is encased in the molding material.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the attachment structures contains polyimide.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the attachment structures each have a body portion and a head portion that is wider than the body portion.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

a first subset of the attachment structures is implemented on one or more edges of the substrate; and

a second subset of the attachment structures is implemented away from the one or more edges of the substrate.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein:

the first subset of the attachment structures are each oriented in a first direction; and

the second subset of the attachment structures are each oriented in a second direction different from the first direction.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is a part of a paddle lead assembly.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is a part of a curved cuff lead assembly.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the molding material is disposed entirely on the second side and does not come into direct physical contact with the first side of the substrate.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of cutouts in the substrate, wherein each of the cutouts is located directly adjacent to a respective one of the attachment structures.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein each of the cutouts is filled by portions of the molding material.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the attachment structures is bendable prior to being encased in the molding material.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the molding material comprises silicone.

13. An apparatus, comprising:

a substrate that contains polyimide;

a plurality of electrodes disposed on the substrate, wherein the electrodes are configured to deliver electrical stimulation to nerve issue located on a first side of the substrate;

a molding material disposed on a second side of the substrate opposite the first side, wherein a disposition of the molding material on the substrate provides rigidity to the substrate; and

a plurality of attachment structures disposed on the substrate, wherein the attachment structures each protrude into, and are surrounded by, the molding material on the second side.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the attachment structures and the substrate have identical material compositions.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the attachment structures each have a body portion and a head portion that is wider than the body portion.

16. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein:

a first subset of the attachment structures is located at different edges of the substrate; and

a second subset of the attachment structures is located at different internal regions of a planar surface of the substrate away from the different edges.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein:

the first subset of the attachment structures are each oriented in a first direction; and

the second subset of the attachment structures are each oriented in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction.

18. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising a plurality of cutouts in the substrate, wherein each of the cutouts is located directly adjacent to a respective one of the attachment structures, and wherein each of the cutouts is filled by portions of the molding material.

19. A method, comprising:

providing a thin film substrate having a plurality of electrodes disposed thereon, wherein the electrodes are exposed from a front side of the thin film substrate, and wherein the thin film substrate contains polyimide and includes a plurality of tabs that extend outwards;

folding each of the tabs toward a back side of the thin film substrate; and

applying a molding material to the back side of the thin film substrate, wherein the molding material encases each of the tabs therein, thereby promoting adhesion between the thin film substrate and the molding material.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the providing the thin film substrate comprises fabricating the thin film substrate and the tabs simultaneously at least in part via one or more lithography processes, wherein the tabs are fabricated as integral parts of the thin film substrate.
