Abstract

This disclosure describes an improved heat transfer system for use in reaction vessels used in chemical and biological processes. In one embodiment, a heat transfer baffle comprising two sub-assemblies adjoined to one another is provided.

Claims (21)

1. A method for carrying out a chemical process, a pharmaceutical process, or a biological process within a reactor vessel, the reactor vessel comprising at least one heat transfer baffle comprising at least one relief channel; and, at least one distribution channel formed between a first material and a support material; wherein:

the distribution channel comprises heat transfer fluid therein; and,

the heat transfer baffle is attached to the reactor vessel at a substantially seamless attachment point.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one heat transfer baffle comprises at least one closure bar having an adjustable width that determines the width of the relief channel and is fixably attached to the support material.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the distribution channel is formed between a first material and a second material to form a sub-assembly, and the relief channel is formed between two sub-assemblies.

4. The reaction vessel of claim 1 wherein the at least one heat transfer baffle comprises:

a. a first sub-assembly consisting essentially of a first material adjoined to a second support material to provide a distribution channel,

b. a second sub-assembly consisting essentially of a first material adjoined to a support material to provide a distribution channel, and

c. a third material that adjoins the first assembly and the second sub-assembly to one another, wherein the distribution channel is formed between a first material and the support material, and the least one relief channel is formed between the first sub-assembly and the second sub-assembly.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one heat transfer baffle comprises two or more distinct compartments through which heat transfer media may be circulated independently of any other compartment.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one distribution channel is adjoined to a heat transfer media inlet header of the reactor vessel.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one distribution channel is adjoined to a heat transfer media outlet header.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one distribution channel being adjoined to a heat transfer media inlet header and a heat transfer media outlet header.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one heat transfer baffle is adjoined to at least one heat transfer media inlet header and at least one heat transfer media outlet header, and the relief channel of each baffle is vented to the vessel exterior.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the reactor vessel comprises two or more heat transfer baffles.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the one or more heat transfer baffles is fixable attached to the interior surface of the reaction vessel at an angle relative to the interior wall or radius of the vessel, the angle being selected from the group consisting of about 5°, 10°, 15°, 20°, 25°, 30°, 35°, 40°, 45°, 50°, 55°, 60°, 65°, 70°, 75°, 80°, 85°, and 90°.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the angle is about 60° relative to the interior wall or about 30° relative to the radius.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the reactor vessel fermenter or bioreactor.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the biological process is a microbiological culture, mammalian cell culture, or plant cell culture.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the biological process is a method for cultivating cells.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the cells are selected from the group consisting of microbiological cells, mammalian cells, insect cells, and plant cells.
