Abstract

Claims (58)

1. A mask system for delivering breathable gas at positive pressure to a patient for treatment of sleep disordered breathing, comprising:

a frame having an opening formed therein and arranged to receive the breathable gas in use;

an axis extending through the opening in the frame;

a cushion connected to the frame, the cushion comprising silicone and configured to, in use, form a seal with the patient's face to deliver the breathable gas to an airway of the patient, an inner edge of the cushion defining a cushion aperture through which the breathable gas is to be delivered to the patient, the axis extending through the cushion aperture;

the frame being formed of a material having increased rigidity as compared to the silicone material of the cushion;

a fluid connector forming a gas passageway and configured to be disposed between the frame and an air delivery tube to, in use, convey the breathable gas from the air delivery tube towards the opening in the frame, an end portion of the fluid connector defining an aperture at a first end of the gas passageway;

a shroud configured to be connected to the fluid connector;

a pair of arms connected to the shroud and configured to extend, in use, upwardly and posteriorly on respective sides of the patient's face, each arm having a slot formed therein to receive an end portion of a headgear strap; and

a plurality of vent holes for washout of exhaust gases, the plurality of vent holes being disposed in a spaced-apart arrangement forming an are around the axis of the opening in the frame,

wherein the frame and the end portion of the fluid connector are arranged such that the axis extends through the aperture in the end portion of the fluid connector,

wherein the plurality of vent holes consists only of a single row of vent holes,

wherein the plurality of vent holes includes a first vent hole, a second vent hole, a third vent hole, a fourth vent hole and a fifth vent hole arranged consecutively in series, and

wherein the mask system does not include a forehead support configured to engage the patient's forehead in use.

2. The mask system of claim 1 , further comprising the air delivery tube,

wherein the fluid connector is connected to the air delivery tube.

3. The mask system of claim 2 , wherein the end portion of the fluid connector is a first end portion, the fluid connector having a second end portion connected to the air delivery tube.

4. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid connector comprises a material having increased rigidity as compared to the silicone material of the cushion.

5. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the cushion and the frame are molded to form an integrated component.

6. The mask system of claim 5 , wherein the cushion and the frame form a chemical bond.

7. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the material of the frame is polycarbonate or polypropylene.

8. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the cushion is an oro-nasal cushion.

9. The mask system of claim 1 , further comprising a pair of upper headgear straps configured to connect with the pair of arms, wherein in use, the headgear straps are configured to extend from the arms towards a rear portion of the patient's head.

10. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of vent holes is configured to be disposed below the patient's eye level when the mask system is in use.

11. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein each arm comprises a material that is relatively rigid as compared to the silicone of the cushion.

12. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the arms are configured to stabilize the mask system, in use, by engaging respective sides of the patient's face.

13. The mask system of claim 1 , further comprising a pair of lower headgear connectors formed on respective sides of the shroud, each lower headgear connector being configured to connect to a respective lower headgear strap.

14. The mask system of claim 1 , further comprising the air delivery tube,

wherein the fluid connector is connected to the air delivery tube,

wherein the fluid connector comprises a material having increased rigidity as compared to the silicone material of the cushion,

wherein each arm comprises a material that is relatively rigid as compared to the silicone of the cushion,

wherein the arms are configured to stabilize the mask system, in use, by pressing against the patient's cheeks,

wherein the material of the fluid connector is polycarbonate or polypropylene,

wherein the cushion is an oro-nasal cushion,

wherein the cushion and the frame are molded to form an integrated component,

wherein the cushion and the frame form a chemical bond, and

wherein the material of the frame is polycarbonate or polypropylene.

15. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of vent holes is disposed along the end portion of the fluid connector in the spaced-apart arrangement which extends around the entire perimeter of the end portion of the fluid connector.

16. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid connector is an elbow.

17. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid connector comprises silicone, and the plurality of vent holes is formed through the silicone.

18. A mask system for delivering breathable gas at positive pressure to a patient for treatment of sleep disordered breathing, comprising:

a frame having an opening formed therein and arranged to receive the breathable gas in use;

an axis extending through the opening in the frame;

a cushion connected to the frame, the cushion comprising silicone and configured to, in use, form a seal with the patient's face to deliver the breathable gas to an airway of the patient, an inner edge of the cushion defining an aperture through which the breathable gas is to be delivered to the patient, the axis extending through the aperture;

the frame being formed of a material having increased rigidity as compared to the silicone material of the cushion;

an air delivery tube configured to convey the breathable gas from a source of pressurized breathable gas along a gas passageway of the air delivery tube towards the cushion;

a hollow vent structure disposed between the frame and the air delivery tube, the hollow vent structure including a plurality of vent holes formed therein for washout of exhaust gases, the plurality of vent holes being disposed in a spaced-apart arrangement forming an arc around the axis of the opening in the frame;

a shroud connected to the hollow vent structure; and

a pair of arms configured to, in use, extend from the shroud on respective sides of the patient's face, each arm having a slot formed therein to receive an end portion of a headgear strap,

wherein the plurality of vent holes formed in the hollow vent structure consists only of a single row of vent holes,

wherein the plurality of vent holes includes a first vent hole, a second vent hole, a third vent hole, a fourth vent hole and a fifth vent hole arranged consecutively in series, and

wherein the mask system does not include a forehead support configured to engage the patient's forehead in use.

19. The mask system of claim 18 , wherein the plurality of vent holes is formed through a material of the hollow vent structure.

20. The mask system of claim 19 , wherein the material of the hollow vent structure comprises silicone.

21. The mask system of claim 18 , wherein the cushion and the frame are molded to form an integrated component.

22. The mask system of claim 18 , wherein each arm comprises a material that is relatively rigid as compared to the silicone of the cushion.

23. The mask system of claim 18 , wherein the arms are configured to stabilize the mask system, in use, by engaging respective sides of the patient's face.

24. The mask system of claim 18 , further comprising a pair of headgear straps configured to connect with the pair of arms, wherein, in use, the headgear straps are configured to extend from the arms towards a rear portion of the patient's head.

25. The mask system of claim 18 , further comprising a pair of lower headgear connectors formed on respective sides of the shroud, each lower headgear connector being configured to connect to a respective lower headgear strap.
