Abstract

A nozzle for water jet equipment and a method of use thereof. The nozzle has a body including a base with a shaft extending outwardly therefrom. The shaft is inserted through a bore of a sleeve that rotatable about the shaft. The base and shaft define a bore therein. At least one opening is defined in the shaft and one or more grooves are milled into the shaft's exterior surface. Each opening places the body's bore in fluid communication with one of the grooves and the sleeve's bore. Water flowing through the body's bore will flow through each opening, into the associated groove and into a space between the shaft and sleeve. The shaft terminates in a conical section usable as a battering ram to break up blockages in pipes during cleaning operations.

Claims (37)

1. A nozzle for engagement with a washing arm, said nozzle comprising:

a body comprising:

a shaft having a first section that extends along a longitudinal axis; and

a sleeve mounted for rotation about the first section of the shaft;

wherein the sleeve is separated from the first section of the shaft by a space;

wherein the shaft defines a blind bore coaxially aligned with the longitudinal axis;

wherein an exterior surface of the first section of the shaft defines at least one opening therein that is in fluid communication with the blind bore; and

wherein the exterior surface of the first section of the shaft defines one or more grooves therein and the at least one opening is in fluid communication with at least one of the one or more grooves.

2. The nozzle as defined in claim 1 , wherein a bore of the sleeve includes a first region, a second region, and a third region; wherein the second region is located between the first region and the third region; and wherein both of the first region and the third region are of a first diameter and the second region is of a second diameter, and the second diameter is greater than the first diameter.

3. The nozzle as defined in claim 2 , wherein the first diameter is of a size that approximates an external diameter of the first section of the shaft.

4. The nozzle as defined in claim 1 , wherein the sleeve comprises a first end defining a first end aperture, a second end aperture and a third end aperture therein; and wherein the first end aperture, second end aperture and third end aperture are in fluid communication with a bore of the sleeve.

5. The nozzle as defined in claim 4 , wherein the first end aperture is oriented at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve, and the first end aperture is oriented so as to direct water from the bore of the sleeve outwardly beyond an exterior surface of an outer wall of the sleeve.

6. The nozzle as defined in claim 4 , wherein the second end aperture is oriented at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve; and the second end aperture is oriented so as to direct water from the bore of the sleeve inwardly toward the longitudinal axis of the sleeve and toward a tip of the shaft that projects outwardly from the first end of the sleeve.

7. The nozzle as defined in claim 4 , wherein the third end aperture is oriented at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve; and wherein the third end aperture is oriented so as to direct water from the bore of the sleeve outwardly beyond an exterior surface of the outer wall of the sleeve; and wherein water flowing out of the third end aperture causes rotation of the sleeve about the shaft.

8. The nozzle as defined in claim 1 , wherein the shaft further comprises:

a second section that extends outwardly from the first section, wherein the second section is externally threaded with threads; and

a nose cone that is internally threaded and is selectively engageable with the second section of the shaft.

9. The nozzle as defined in claim 8 , wherein the shaft further comprises:

a third section that extends outwardly from the second section, wherein the third section has an exterior surface that is smooth, wherein the third section tapers in external diameter and terminates in a tip, and wherein the tip is free of openings.

10. A method of manufacturing a nozzle for engagement with a washing arm, said method comprising:

providing a body by:

forming a shaft having a first section that extends along a longitudinal axis and a blind bore coaxially aligned with the longitudinal axis;

forming on an exterior surface of the first section of the shaft:

at least one opening in fluid communication with the blind bore; and

one or more grooves, wherein the at least one opening is in fluid communication with at least one of the one or more grooves; and

mounting a sleeve on the shaft for rotation about the first section, wherein the exterior surface of the first section of the shaft is separated from the interior surface of the sleeve by a space.

11. The method as defined in claim 10 , wherein the method further comprises providing the sleeve with a bore therethrough having a first region, a second region, and a third region; wherein the second region is located between the first region and the third region; and wherein both of the first region and the third region are of a first diameter and the second region is of a second diameter, and the second diameter is greater than the first diameter.

12. The method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the first diameter is of a size that approximates an external diameter of the first section of the shaft.

13. The method as defined in claim 10 , wherein the method further comprises providing the sleeve with a first end defining a first end aperture, a second end aperture and a third end aperture therein; and wherein the first end aperture, second end aperture and third end aperture are in fluid communication with a bore of the sleeve.

14. The method as defined in claim 13 , wherein the first end aperture is oriented at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve, and the first end aperture is oriented so as to direct water from the bore of the sleeve outwardly beyond an exterior surface of an outer wall of the sleeve.

15. The method as defined in claim 13 , wherein the second end aperture is oriented at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve; and the second end aperture is oriented so as to direct water from the bore of the sleeve inwardly toward the longitudinal axis of the sleeve and toward a tip of the shaft that projects outwardly from the first end of the sleeve.

16. The method as defined in claim 13 , wherein the third end aperture is oriented at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve; and wherein the third end aperture is oriented so as to direct water from the bore of the sleeve outwardly beyond an exterior surface of the outer wall of the sleeve; and wherein water flowing out of the third end aperture causes rotation of the sleeve about the shaft.

17. The method as defined in claim 10 , wherein the shaft further comprises:

a second section that extends outwardly from the first section, wherein the second section is externally threaded with threads; and

a nose cone that is internally threaded and is selectively engageable with the second section of the shaft.

18. The method as defined in claim 17 , wherein the shaft further comprises:

a third section that extends outwardly from the second section, wherein the third section has an exterior surface that is smooth, wherein the third section tapers in external diameter and terminates in a tip, and wherein the tip is free of openings.
