Abstract

An apparatus includes a power converter, one or more power source terminal configured to connect to a power source, and one or more load terminal. The apparatus further includes two or more energy storage terminals configured to connect to two or more electrical energy storage devices. Two or more protection circuits, included in the apparatus, one for each of the protection circuits, is electrically connected between the respective energy storage terminal and the power converter. The two or more protection circuits are configured to disconnect the respective terminal from the power converter following a failure of the respective one of the electrical energy storage devices.

Claims (50)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

electrical energy storage (EES) comprising first terminals;

a circuit board comprising second terminals, wherein at least some of the second terminals are connected to the first terminals;

an enclosure; and

at least one leg comprising:

an electrical plug,

an electrical socket,

conductors electrically connecting the electrical plug and the electrical socket, and

an isolating material encasing at least part of the leg,

wherein the electrical socket and the electrical plug are configured to connect to each other,

wherein the leg extends from a top surface of the enclosure to a bottom surface of the enclosure,

wherein the electrical plug and the electrical socket are on opposite ends of the leg, and

wherein the conductors of the at least one leg are electrically connected to at least some of the second terminals that are not connected to the first terminals.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the circuit board further comprises a DC/DC converter configured to charge and discharge the EES.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein when a second apparatus is placed on the apparatus:

a socket of a second leg of the second apparatus connects with the electrical plug of the at least one leg of the apparatus; or

a plug of a second leg of the second apparatus connects with the electrical socket of the at least one leg of the apparatus.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the circuit board comprises protection circuits.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the circuit board comprises a communication circuit for sending a notification of failure to a power device.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the EES is configured to store electrical energy using at least one of a thermal storage, a kinetic storage, a compressed air device, a flywheel, a fuel cell, a flow battery, and an electrochemical cell.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the conductors comprise power conductors and signal conductors.

8. A system comprising:

a power device; and

at least one energy device comprising:

electrical energy storage (EES) comprising first terminals;

an enclosure;

a circuit board comprising second terminals, wherein at least some of the second terminals are connected to the first terminals; and

a leg comprising:

an electrical plug,

an electrical socket,

conductors electrically connecting the electrical plug and the electrical socket, and

an isolating material encasing at least part of the leg,

wherein the leg extends the height of the enclosure,

wherein the socket and the plug are configured to connect to each other,

wherein the electrical plug and the electrical socket are on opposite ends of the leg, and

wherein the conductors of the leg are electrically connected to at least some of the second terminals that are not connected to the first terminals.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein when a second at least one energy device is placed on the at least one energy device:

a socket of a second leg of the second energy device connects with the electrical plug of the leg of the at least one energy device; or

a plug of a second leg of the second energy device connects with the electrical socket of the leg of the at least one energy device.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the power device further comprises a DC/DC converter.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the circuit board comprises a DC/DC converter.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the power device comprises protection circuits.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the circuit board comprises a communication circuit for sending a notification of failure to the power device.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the EES is configured to store electrical energy using at least one of a thermal storage, a kinetic storage, a compressed air device, a flywheel, a fuel cell, a flow battery, and an electrochemical cell.

15. The system of claim 8 , wherein the circuit board is configured to charge and discharge the EES.

16. The system of claim 8 , further comprising at least one of a photovoltaic power generator, a fuel cell, a DC generator, or a DC-connected wind turbine.

17. The system of claim 8 , wherein the circuit board comprises protection circuits.

18. The system of claim 8 , wherein the conductors comprise power conductors and signal conductors.

19. The system of claim 8 , wherein the power device comprises a communication circuit configured for receiving a notification of failure from the at least one energy device.

20. The system of claim 8 , comprising a plurality of energy devices, wherein the power device and the plurality of energy devices each comprises enclosures and legs, where each leg is used to electrically connect the power device to the plurality of energy devices.
