Abstract

A compact rifle-caliber firearm is provided herein comprising a receiver body, a barrel, and a grip. The barrel is coupled to the receiver body and extends in a forward direction relative to the receiver body. The barrel includes a bore and a bore axis. The grip is coupled to the receiver body and positioned rearward relative to the barrel. The grip is operable to accept a magazine sized for rifle cartridges. The grip includes a grip depth that is less than or equal to two inches. The compact rifle-caliber firearm may further include a magazine operable to be inserted into the grip and operable to receive rifle cartridges. An interior magazine depth may be less than a length of the rifle cartridges. Rifle cartridges positioned in the magazine may be angled relative to an uppermost cartridge.

Claims (45)

1. A magazine for a compact rifle-caliber firearm comprising:

wherein the magazine is configured to be inserted within a grip of the compact rifle-caliber firearm and receive a plurality of rifle cartridges having a cartridge length;

a forward wall having a forward wall interior surface and a rearward wall having a ridgeless rearward wall interior surface;

feed lips positioned at an upper end of the magazine;

a follower positioned between the forward and rearward walls and biased towards the upper end of the magazine, the follower having an upper surface including a fixed angle forward portion and a pivotal rearward portion biased to align an uppermost rifle cartridge of the plurality of rifle cartridges with the feed lips of the magazine; and

wherein the uppermost rifle cartridge is configured to be oriented at a first cartridge angle relative to the rearward wall interior surface and at least a portion of the uppermost rifle cartridge extends past the forward wall.

2. The magazine of claim 1 , wherein:

the uppermost rifle cartridge is configured to be oriented at a chambering angle relative to a bore axis of the compact rifle-caliber firearm when the magazine is inserted within the grip, the chambering angle being between about zero (0) degrees and about twenty (20) degrees.

3. The magazine of claim 1 , wherein:

a second rifle cartridge of the plurality of rifle cartridges is configured to be positioned adjacent to the uppermost rifle cartridge and at a second cartridge angle relative to the rearward wall interior surface, the second cartridge angle being greater than the first cartridge angle.

4. The magazine of claim 3 , wherein:

the second cartridge angle is greater than the first cartridge angle by between about one-half (0.5) of a degree to about ten (10) degrees.

5. The magazine of claim 3 , wherein:

a third rifle cartridge of the plurality of rifle cartridges is configured to be positioned adjacent to the second rifle cartridge and at a third cartridge angle relative to the rearward wall interior surface, the third cartridge angle being greater than the second cartridge angle.

6. The magazine of claim 5 , wherein:

the third cartridge angle is greater than the second cartridge angle by between about one-half (0.5) of a degree to about ten (10) degrees.

7. The magazine of claim 1 , wherein:

a previous cartridge of the plurality of rifle cartridges is configured to be positioned at a previous cartridge angle relative to the rearward wall interior surface; and

a successive cartridge of the plurality of rifle cartridges is configured to be positioned adjacent the previous cartridge and at a successive cartridge angle relative to the rearward wall interior surface, the successive cartridge angle being greater than the previous cartridge angle by approximately one-half (0.5) of a degree to two (2) degrees.

8. The magazine of claim 1 , further comprising:

an interior depth defined between the forward wall interior surface and rearward wall interior surface, the interior depth being less than a cartridge length.

9. The magazine of claim 1 , wherein:

an angle between the upper surface of the follower relative to the rearward wall interior surface above the follower is in a range of from about ten (10) degrees to about sixty (60) degrees.

10. A compact rifle-caliber firearm for mechanically chambering a plurality of rifle cartridges having a cartridge length, the compact rifle-caliber firearm comprising:

a receiver body;

a barrel coupled to the receiver body and extending in a forward direction relative to the receiver body, the barrel including a bore with a bore axis;

a grip coupled to the receiver body;

a magazine configured to be inserted within the grip, the magazine including a forward wall having a forward wall interior surface and a rearward wall having a ridgeless rearward wall interior surface; and

an interior depth defined between the forward wall interior surface and rearward wall interior surface, the interior depth being less than the cartridge length;

wherein an uppermost rifle cartridge of the plurality of rifle cartridges is configured to be oriented at a chambering angle relative to the bore axis when the magazine is inserted within the grip, the chambering angle being in a range of from zero (0) degrees to twenty (20) degrees.

11. The magazine of claim 10 , wherein:

at least a portion of the uppermost rifle cartridge extends past the forward wall.

12. The compact rifle-caliber firearm of claim 10 , wherein:

a second rifle cartridge of the plurality of rifle cartridges is configured to be positioned adjacent the uppermost rifle cartridge, the second rifle cartridge having a greater angle relative the bore axis than the uppermost rifle cartridge.

13. The compact rifle-caliber firearm of claim 10 , wherein:

a previous cartridge of the plurality of rifle cartridges is configured to be positioned at a previous cartridge angle relative to the rearward wall interior surface; and

a successive cartridge of the plurality of rifle cartridges is configured to be positioned adjacent the previous cartridge and at a successive cartridge angle relative to the rearward wall interior surface, the successive cartridge angle being greater than the previous cartridge angle by approximately one-half (0.5) of a degree to two (2) degrees.

14. The compact rifle-caliber firearm of claim 10 , wherein:

the uppermost rifle cartridge is configured to be oriented at a first cartridge angle relative to the rearward wall interior surface, the first cartridge angle being in a range of from one-hundred-ten (110) degrees to one-hundred-forty (140) degrees and a second rifle cartridge of the plurality of rifle cartridges is configured to be positioned adjacent to the uppermost rifle cartridge and at a second cartridge angle relative to the rearward wall interior surface, the second cartridge angle being greater than the first cartridge angle.

15. The compact rifle-caliber firearm of claim 14 , wherein:

the second cartridge angle is greater than the first cartridge angle by between about one-half (0.5) of a degree to about ten (10) degrees.

16. The compact rifle-caliber firearm of claim 14 , wherein:

a third rifle cartridge of the plurality of rifle cartridges is configured to be positioned adjacent to the second rifle cartridge and at a third cartridge angle relative to the rearward wall interior surface, the third cartridge angle being greater than the second cartridge angle.

17. The compact rifle-caliber firearm of claim 16 , wherein:

the second cartridge angle is greater than the second cartridge angle by between about one-half (0.5) of a degree to about ten (10) degrees.
