Abstract

Systems for treatment of glaucoma comprise an excimer laser, a plurality of fiber probes, and a processor. Each fiber probe is attachable to the excimer laser to treat a subject having glaucoma by delivering shots from the laser. The processor is configured to monitor and limit a variable number of shots delivered by each fiber probe, the number of shots delivered by each fiber probe programmable within a range. Methods of treating glaucoma include programming a fiber probe to deliver a number of shots from an excimer laser. The fiber probe is inserted into an eye of a subject having glaucoma and adjusted to a position transverse to Schlemm's canal in the eye. A plurality of shots is applied from the excimer laser source while the probe is in the transverse position, thereby treating glaucoma by creating a plurality of perforations in Schlemm's canal and/or the trabecular meshwork.

Claims (29)

1 . A method of treating glaucoma comprising:

programming a fiber probe to deliver a shot from an excimer laser source at a power output level based on a user interaction with at least one user input element of a user interface;

inserting the fiber probe into an eye of a subject having glaucoma;

adjusting placement of the fiber probe to a position transverse to a Schlemm's canal in the eye; and

applying a plurality of shots from the excimer laser source while the fiber probe is in the position transverse to the Schlemm's canal, thereby treating the glaucoma by creating a plurality of perforations in the Schlemm's canal and/or trabecular meshwork of the eye.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying, on a display, a number of shots already applied.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising changing a display based on the user interaction with the at least one user input element of the user interface.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user interaction is a first user interaction, and wherein the method further comprises adjusting a pulse or width setting of the excimer laser source based on a second user interaction with the at least one user input element.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user interaction is a first user interaction, and wherein the method further comprises adjusting a pulse width setting of the excimer laser source based on a second user interaction with the at least one user input element.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user interaction is a first user interaction, and wherein the method further comprises adjusting an amplitude setting of the excimer laser source based on a second user interaction with the at least one user input element.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the power output level of the excimer laser source is pre-defined by a manufacturer.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the manufacturer manufactures at least one of the excimer laser source or the fiber probe.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising adjusting the power output level of the excimer laser source within a predefined range set by a manufacturer.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the fiber probe is a first fiber probe, and wherein the method further comprises:

removing a first connection plug of the first fiber probe from the excimer laser source; and

plugging a second connection plug of a second fiber probe into the excimer laser source.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the power output level is a first power output level, the user interaction is a first user interaction, and wherein the method further comprises:

programming the second fiber probe to deliver a shot from the excimer laser source at a second power output level based on a second user interaction with the at least one user input element of a user interface.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the eye is a first eye of a first subject having glaucoma, and wherein the method further comprises:

inserting the second fiber probe into a second eye of a second subject having glaucoma;

adjusting placement of the second fiber probe to a position transverse to a Schlemm's canal in the second eye; and

applying a plurality of shots from the excimer laser source while the second fiber probe is in the position transverse to the Schlemm's canal of the second eye, thereby treating the glaucoma by creating a plurality of perforations in the Schlemm's canal of the second eye and/or trabecular meshwork of the second eye.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the fiber probe is one of a plurality of fiber probes, each fiber probe of the plurality of fiber probes attachable to the excimer laser source to treat a subject having glaucoma by delivering shots from the excimer laser source.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user interaction is a first user interaction, and wherein the method further comprises:

adjusting a maximum number of laser shots to be delivered by the fiber probe based on a second user interaction with the at least one user input element of the user interface.

15 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising displaying, on a display, the maximum number of laser shots to be delivered by the fiber probe.

16 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising causing a display to change based on the second user interaction with the at least one user input element of the user interface.

17 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the second user interaction with the at least one user input element of the user interface is configured to adjust upward the maximum number of laser shots to be delivered by the fiber probe.

18 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the second user interaction with the at least one user input element of the user interface is configured to adjust downward the maximum number of laser shots to be delivered by the fiber probe.
