Abstract

An auto-injector for administering a dose of a liquid medicament includes an elongate housing arranged to contain a syringe with a hollow needle and a stopper for sealing the syringe and displacing the medicament, the housing having a distal end and a proximal end with an orifice intended to be applied against an injection site. The syringe is slidably arranged with respect to the housing. A spring capable of, upon activation: pushing the needle from a covered position inside the housing into an advanced position through the orifice and past the proximal end (P), operating the syringe to supply the dose of medicament (M), and retracting the syringe with the needle into the covered position. After delivering the medicament, an activator arranged to lock the spring in a pressurized state prior to manual operation and capable of, upon manual operation, releasing the spring for injection.

Claims (52)

1 . An auto-injector comprising:

a housing;

a retraction sleeve disposed within the housing;

a latch configured to releasably engage a stop of the retraction sleeve to limit relative movement between the retraction sleeve and the housing;

a spring disposed in the housing, the spring configured to bias the retraction sleeve in a distal direction relative to the housing during needle retraction;

a syringe holder disposed in a proximal region of the retraction sleeve, the syringe holder configured to (i) retain a syringe containing a medicament, and (ii) slidably engage a front face of the retraction sleeve to couple distal movement of the retraction sleeve to the syringe holder for needle retraction;

a collar disposed in the housing, the collar containing a viscous substance; and

a decoupling member disposed in the housing, the decoupling member having an outer portion configured to extend through a first opening of the retraction sleeve for allowing the decoupling member to engage and deflect at least a portion of the latch in a proximal direction to release the engagement between the latch and the stop of the retraction sleeve while the decoupling member moves in the proximal direction relative to the retraction sleeve and the housing during medicament delivery,

wherein the auto-injector is configured such that deflecting the latch out of engagement with the stop allows the viscous substance in the collar to impede a relative movement within the housing against the bias of the spring to delay needle retraction, and

wherein at least a portion of the auto-injector defines a viewing window for viewing the syringe when the syringe is in the auto-injector.

2 . The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the decoupling member is configured to deflect the latch out of engagement with the stop before all of the medicament has been dispensed from the syringe.

3 . The auto-injector of claim 2 , wherein the auto-injector is configured such that the retraction sleeve begins to move relative to the housing by the bias of the spring while the medicament is being dispensed from the syringe.

4 . The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the syringe holder is configured to limit proximal movement of the syringe relative to the syringe holder.

5 . The auto-injector of claim 4 , comprising the syringe disposed in the syringe holder.

6 . The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the first opening of the retraction sleeve is part of an axially-extending opening in which the outer portion of the decoupling member is configured to axially slide along during medicament delivery.

7 . The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the decoupling member comprises a flange portion configured to receive a proximally-directed force that biases the decoupling member in the proximal direction relative to the retraction sleeve.

8 . The auto-injector of claim 7 , wherein the decoupling member comprises an axially-extending resilient arm defining an axial end of the decoupling member.

9 . The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the auto-injector is configured such that relative movement between the retraction sleeve and the housing only occurs after the outer portion of the decoupling member has deflected the latch out of engagement with the stop.

10 . The auto-injector of claim 1 , comprising:

a needle shield covering a needle of the syringe of the auto-injector; and

a cap covering the needle shield, the auto-injector being configured such that the needle shield is removed from the needle as the cap is removed from the auto-injector.

11 . The auto-injector of claim 10 , wherein the auto-injector is configured such that the syringe holder retaining the syringe remains in an initial position within the auto-injector as the cap is removed from the auto-injector.

The auto-injector of claim 1 , comprising a trigger button disposed at a distal end of the auto-injector, the auto-injector configured such that depressing the trigger button into the housing releases the decoupling member for movement in the proximal direction relative to the retraction sleeve.

13 . The auto-injector of claim 1 , herein a distal end of the retraction sleeve defines a second opening that is centered at a longitudinal axis of the auto-injector.

14 . The auto-injector of claim 13 , comprising a plunger configured to be disposed at the longitudinal axis of the auto-injector with a distal end of the plunger extending distally through the second opening at the distal end of the retraction sleeve.

15 . The auto-injector of claim 14 , comprising two resilient arms configured to deflect in a radial direction to release the plunger from being held in a first position to allow needle insertion and medicament delivery.

16 . The auto-injector of claim 14 , wherein the plunger and the decoupling member are distinct components of the auto-injector.

17 . The auto-injector of claim 15 , wherein the retraction sleeve comprises the two resilient arms.

18 . The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the housing comprises the latch.

19 . An auto-injector comprising:

a housing;

a retraction sleeve configured to be disposed within the housing;

a latch configured to releasably engage a stop of the retraction sleeve to limit relative movement between the retraction sleeve and the housing;

a spring configured to be disposed in the housing, the spring configured to bias the retraction sleeve in a distal direction relative to the housing during needle retraction;

a syringe holder configured to be disposed in a proximal region of the retraction sleeve, the syringe holder configured to (i) retain a syringe containing a medicament, and (ii) slidably engage a front face of the retraction sleeve to couple distal movement of the retraction sleeve to the syringe holder for needle retraction;

a collar configured to be disposed in the housing, the collar containing a viscous substance; and

a decoupling member configured to be disposed in the housing, the decoupling member having an outer portion configured to extend through a first opening of the retraction sleeve for allowing the decoupling member to engage and deflect at least a portion of the latch in a proximal direction to release the engagement between the latch and the stop of the retraction sleeve while the decoupling member moves in the proximal direction relative to the retraction sleeve and the housing during medicament delivery,

wherein the auto-injector is configured such that deflecting the latch out of engagement with the stop allows the viscous substance in the collar to impede a relative movement within the housing against the bias of the spring to delay needle retraction, and

wherein at least a portion of the auto-injector defines a viewing window for viewing the syringe when the syringe is in the auto-injector.

20 . The auto-injector of claim 19 , wherein the decoupling member is configured to deflect the latch out of engagement with the stop before all of the medicament has been dispensed from the syringe.

21 . The auto-injector of claim 20 , wherein the housing comprises the latch.

22 . The auto-injector of claim 19 , wherein the first opening of the retraction sleeve is part of an axially-extending opening in which the outer portion of the decoupling member is configured to axially slide along during medicament delivery.

23 . The auto-injector of claim 16 , wherein the decoupling member comprises a flange portion configured to receive a proximally-directed force that biases the decoupling member in the proximal direction relative to the retraction sleeve.

24 . The auto-injector of claim 22 , wherein the decoupling member comprises an axially-extending resilient arm defining an axial end of the decoupling member.

25 . The auto-injector of claim 22 , wherein the auto-injector is configured such that relative movement between the retraction sleeve and the housing only occurs after the outer portion of the decoupling member has deflected the latch out of engagement with the stop.

26 . The auto-injector of claim 22 , comprising a trigger button disposed at a distal end of the auto-injector, the auto-injector configured such that depressing the trigger button into the housing releases the decoupling member for movement in the proximal direction relative to the retraction sleeve.

27 . The auto-injector of claim 19 , comprising:

a needle shield covering a needle of the syringe of the auto-injector; and

a cap covering the needle shield, the auto-injector being configured such that the needle shield is removed from the needle as the cap is removed from the auto-injector.

28 . The auto-injector of claim 27 , wherein the auto-injector is configured such that the syringe holder retaining the syringe remains in an initial position within the auto-injector as the cap is removed from the auto-injector.

29 . The auto-injector of claim 19 , wherein a distal end of the retraction sleeve defines a second opening that is centered at a longitudinal axis of the auto-injector.

30 . The auto-injector of claim 19 , comprising the syringe disposed in the syringe holder.
