Abstract

An auto-injector for administering a dose of a liquid medicament includes an elongate housing arranged to contain a syringe with a hollow needle and a stopper for sealing the syringe and displacing the medicament, the housing having a distal end and a proximal end with an orifice intended to be applied against an injection site. The syringe is slidably arranged with respect to the housing. A spring capable of, upon activation: pushing the needle from a covered position inside the housing into an advanced position through the orifice and past the proximal end (P), operating the syringe to supply the dose of medicament (M), and retracting the syringe with the needle into the covered position. After delivering the medicament, an activator arranged to lock the spring in a pressurized state prior to manual operation and capable of, upon manual operation, releasing the spring for injection.

Claims (47)

1. An auto-injector comprising:

a housing;

a retraction sleeve comprising a stop configured to releasably engage a latch such that (i) when the latch is engaged to the stop relative movement between the retraction sleeve and the housing is limited, and (ii) when the latch is disengaged with the stop relative movement between the retraction sleeve and the housing is allowed, the stop being located (i) radially outward of a longitudinal axis of the retraction sleeve and (ii) proximal of a distal end of the retraction sleeve, and the distal end of the retraction sleeve defining a first opening located at the longitudinal axis of the retraction sleeve, the first opening extending longitudinally through the distal end of the retraction sleeve;

a syringe carrier disposed in the retraction sleeve and configured to axially retain a syringe containing a medicament;

a plunger rod configured to engage the distal end of the retraction sleeve while a distal end of the plunger rod is located within the first opening of the retraction sleeve to hold the plunger rod in an initial position prior to needle insertion and medicament delivery;

a decoupling member configured to move in a proximal direction relative to the retraction sleeve during needle insertion and medicament delivery and engage the latch to deflect the latch out of engagement with the stop of the retraction sleeve;

a spring configured to engage the retraction sleeve to bias the retraction sleeve in a distal direction relative to the housing for needle retraction; and

a collar containing a viscous substance for increasing a length of time between medicament delivery and needle retraction,

wherein a proximal end of the retraction sleeve comprises a front face configured to engage the syringe carrier to couple distal movement of the retraction sleeve to the syringe carrier for allowing the syringe carrier to move in the distal direction relative to the retraction sleeve during needle retraction.

The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the auto-injector is configured such that the decoupling member moves proximally with the plunger rod of the auto-injector when the plunger rod moves proximally relative to the housing to insert a needle of the syringe into an injection site during needle insertion.

The auto-injector of claim 2 , wherein the auto-injector is configured such that the decoupling member moves proximally with the plunger rod when the plunger rod moves proximally relative to the housing to dispense the medicament from the syringe during medicament delivery after inserting the needle into the injection site.

4. The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the decoupling member is configured to deflect the latch out of engagement with the stop (i) after a portion of the medicament has been dispensed from the syringe and (ii) before all of the medicament has been dispensed from the syringe.

The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the retraction sleeve has an axially-extending opening configured to receive an outer portion of the decoupling member and allow the outer portion of the decoupling member to slide along the axially-extending opening relative to the housing while the decoupling member moves proximally relative to the housing, the axially-extending opening being located radially outward of the longitudinal axis of the retraction sleeve and proximal to the distal end of the retraction sleeve.

6. The auto-injector of claim 5 , wherein the outer portion of the decoupling member is configured to extend beyond the axially-extending opening to engage and deflect the latch out of engagement with the stop of the retraction sleeve.

The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the auto-injector is configured such that (i) a needle shield covering a needle of the syringe of the auto-injector is removed from the needle as a cap is removed from the auto-injector, and (ii) the syringe carrier retaining the syringe remains in a first position within the auto-injector as the cap is removed from the auto-injector.

The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the auto-injector is configured such that relative movement between the retraction sleeve and the housing does not occur before (i) a needle of the syringe has been moved in the proximal direction relative to the housing and (ii) the decoupling member has deflected the latch out of engagement with the stop.

The auto-injector of claim 1 , wherein the auto-injector is configured such that during needle retraction the syringe carrier is taken along in the distal direction by the front face of the retraction sleeve to retract the syringe and a needle of the syringe into a safe position inside the housing.

10. The auto-injector of claim 1 , comprising the syringe containing the medicament.

11. The auto-injector of claim 1 , comprising a trigger button disposed at a distal end of the auto-injector for releasing the plunger rod for needle insertion and medicament delivery.

12. An auto-injector comprising:

a housing;

a retraction sleeve comprising a stop configured to releasably engage a latch such that (i) when the latch is engaged to the stop relative movement between the retraction sleeve and the housing is limited, and (ii) when the latch is disengaged with the stop relative movement between the retraction sleeve and the housing is allowed, the stop being located (i) radially outward of a longitudinal axis of the retraction sleeve and (ii) proximal of a distal end of the retraction sleeve, and the distal end of the retraction sleeve defining a first opening located at the longitudinal axis of the retraction sleeve, the first opening extending longitudinally through the distal end of the retraction sleeve;

a syringe carrier configured to axially retain a syringe containing a medicament;

a plunger rod configured to engage the distal end of the retraction sleeve while a distal end of the plunger rod is located within the first opening of the retraction sleeve to hold the plunger rod in an initial position prior to needle insertion and medicament delivery;

a decoupling member configured to move in a proximal direction relative to the retraction sleeve and engage the latch to deflect the latch out of engagement with the stop;

a spring configured to engage the retraction sleeve to bias the retraction sleeve in a distal direction relative to the housing; and

a collar containing a viscous substance for increasing a length of time between medicament delivery and needle retraction,

wherein a proximal end of the retraction sleeve comprises a front face configured to engage the syringe carrier to couple distal movement of the retraction sleeve to the syringe carrier for allowing the syringe carrier to move in the distal direction relative to the retraction sleeve during needle retraction.

13. The auto-injector of claim 12 , wherein the auto-injector is configured such that relative movement between the retraction sleeve and the housing is limited until the decoupling member deflects the latch out of engagement with the stop.

The auto-injector of claim 12 , wherein the auto-injector is configured such that the decoupling member moves proximally with the plunger rod of the auto-injector when the plunger rod moves proximally relative to the housing to (i) insert a needle of the syringe into an injection site and (ii) inject the medicament into the injection site.

15. The auto-injector of claim 12 , wherein the decoupling member is configured to deflect the latch out of engagement with the stop after (i) at least a portion of the medicament has been dispensed from the syringe and (ii) before all of the medicament has been dispensed from the syringe.

16. The auto-injector of claim 12 , comprising the syringe containing the medicament.

17. An auto-injector comprising:

a housing;

a retraction sleeve comprising a stop configured to releasably engage a latch such that (i) when the latch is engaged to the stop relative movement between the retraction sleeve and the housing is limited, and (ii) when the latch is disengaged with the stop relative movement between the retraction sleeve and the housing is allowed, the stop being located (i) radially outward of a longitudinal axis of the retraction sleeve and (ii) proximal of a distal end of the retraction sleeve, and the distal end of the retraction sleeve defining a first opening located at the longitudinal axis of the retraction sleeve, the first opening extending longitudinally through the distal end of the retraction sleeve;

a syringe carrier configured to axially retain a syringe containing a medicament;

a plunger rod configured to engage the distal end of the retraction sleeve while a distal end of the plunger rod is located within the first opening of the retraction sleeve to hold the plunger rod in an initial position prior to needle insertion and medicament delivery;

a decoupling member configured to move in a proximal direction relative to the retraction sleeve and engage the latch to deflect the latch out of engagement with the stop of the retraction sleeve;

a spring configured to engage the retraction sleeve to bias the retraction sleeve in a distal direction relative to the housing; and

a collar containing a viscous substance for increasing a length of time between medicament delivery and needle retraction.

18. The auto-injector of claim 17 , wherein the auto-injector is configured such that relative movement between the retraction sleeve and the housing is limited until the decoupling member deflects the latch out of engagement with the stop of the retraction sleeve.

19. The auto-injector of claim 17 , wherein a proximal end of the retraction sleeve comprises a front face configured to engage the syringe carrier.

The auto-injector of claim 19 , wherein the auto-injector is configured such that during needle retraction the syringe carrier is taken along in the distal direction by the front face of the retraction sleeve to retract the syringe and a needle of the syringe into a safe position inside the housing.

The auto-injector of claim 17 , wherein the auto-injector is configured such that (i) a needle shield covering a needle is removed from the needle as a cap is removed from the auto-injector, and (ii) the syringe carrier retaining the syringe remains in a first position within the auto-injector as the cap is removed from the auto-injector.

22. The auto-injector of claim 17 , comprising the syringe containing the medicament.

The auto-injector of claim 17 , wherein the plunger rod is configured to force a stopper of the syringe in the proximal direction to dispense the medicament from the syringe during medicament delivery, and the auto-injector is configured such that the decoupling member moves proximally with the plunger rod when the plunger rod moves proximally relative to the housing to insert a needle of the syringe into an injection site during needle insertion.

24. The auto-injector of claim 23 , wherein the plunger rod and the decoupling member are separate components of the auto-injector.
