Abstract

An electric drive axle in a vehicle is provided. The electric drive axle includes, in one example, a housing configured to enclose an electric motor-generator and a gearbox. In the electric drive axle, the housing includes a first section that is removably coupled to a second section, the second section at least partially encloses the gearbox, the first section includes a first axle shaft opening, and the second section includes a second axle shaft opening that is laterally aligned with the first axle shaft opening.

Claims (31)

1 . A electric drive axle system, comprising:

a housing body that at least partially encloses an electric motor, a gearbox, and a differential and including a shaft opening;

a first access panel removably attached to a first flange of the housing body via a plurality of attachment devices and providing access to the differential; and

a second access panel removably attached to a second flange of the housing body via a plurality of attachment devices and providing access to at least one of the gearbox and the electric motor;

a plurality of electrical connectors configured to electrically couple to an inverter;

multiple suspension mounting interfaces configured to attach to a suspension system; and

a third access panel removably coupled to the housing body;

wherein the third access panel is arranged parallel to the second access panel;

wherein the first access panel is arranged at a non-parallel angle in relation to the second access panel; and

wherein the housing body, the first access panel, and/or the second access panel include a plurality of reinforcing ribs.

2 . The electric drive axle system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of attachment devices are bolts.

3 . The electric drive axle system of claim 1 , wherein a half shaft extends through the shaft opening.

4 . The electric drive axle system of claim 1 , wherein the electric drive axle system is a non-steerable electric drive axle system.

5 . The electric drive axle system of claim 1 , wherein the third access panel provides access to the electric motor.

6 . The electric drive axle system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of reinforcing ribs have varying heights.

7 . The electric drive axle system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of electrical connectors are included in a wiring harness that is coupled to the housing body.

8 . The electric drive axle system of claim 1 , further comprising two wheel bearing assemblies each of which are coupled to one of two half shafts, wherein one of the two half shafts extends through the shaft opening.

9 . A rigid beam electric axle system, comprising:

a housing body that at least partially encloses an electric motor, a gearbox, and a differential and including a first shaft opening;

a first access panel removably attached to a first flange of the housing body via a plurality of attachment devices and providing access to the differential;

a second access panel removably attached to a second flange of the housing body via a plurality of attachment devices and providing access to at least one of the gearbox and the electric motor;

a wiring harness including electrical connectors configured to electrically couple to an inverter;

multiple suspension mounting interfaces configured to attach to a suspension system; and

a third access panel removably coupled to the housing body;

wherein the first access panel is arranged at a non-parallel angle in relation to the second access panel;

wherein the housing body includes a plurality of reinforcing ribs; and

wherein at least one of the first access panel and the second access panel includes a plurality of reinforcing ribs.

10 . The rigid beam electric axle system of claim 9 , wherein one of the first and second access panels includes a second shaft opening.

11 . The rigid beam electric axle system of claim 10 , wherein half shafts extend through the first and second shaft openings.

12 . The rigid beam electric axle system of claim 9 , wherein the third access panel provides access to the electric motor.

13 . The rigid beam electric axle system of claim 9 , further comprising two wheel bearing assemblies each of which are coupled to one of two half shafts and wherein the wiring harness is coupled to the housing body.
