Abstract

Provided is a method of operating a slave device configured to communicate with a master device and to store a plurality of status flags corresponding to a plurality of device status records, respectively, the method including: receiving a first device status request from the master device; generating a first device status response, wherein based on a value of each status flag of the plurality of status flags, the first device status response includes either a first response type having a first packet capacity or a second response type having a second packet capacity smaller than the first packet capacity; and transmitting the first device status response to the master device.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of device status records comprises one of:

hardware telemetry information representing a hardware status of the slave device;

firmware telemetry information representing a firmware status of the slave device; and

NAND telemetry information representing a status of a non-volatile memory device included in the slave device.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first device status response comprises a response status code representing a response type of the first device status response, and

wherein, when the response status code represents a first response type having the first capacity, the first device status response comprises one or more of the plurality of device status records.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein, when the first device status response has the first response type, the first device status response comprises all of the plurality of device status records.

6 . The method of claim 4 , wherein, when the first device status response has the first response type, the first device status response comprises:

one or more device status records, which are a subset of the plurality of device status records, the one or more device status records having the second value.

7 . The method of claim 2 ,

wherein the plurality of device status records corresponds to a plurality of status values and a plurality of reference ranges, respectively,

wherein, for each of the plurality of device status records, based on the corresponding status value among the plurality of status values being within a corresponding reference range among the plurality of reference ranges, a corresponding status flag has the first value; and

wherein, for each of the plurality of device status records, based on the corresponding status value among the plurality of status values not being within the corresponding reference range among the plurality of reference ranges, the corresponding status flag has the second value.

8 . The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the first device status request is received from the master device through an out-of-band channel, and

wherein the first device status response is transmitted to the master device through the out-of-band channel.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the out-of-band channel is implemented based on at least one of an inter integrated circuit (I2C) protocol, an improved inter integrated circuit (I3C) protocol, a system management bus (SMBus) protocol, and a universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter (UART) protocol.

10 . The method of claim 8 ,

wherein the slave device comprises a solid state drive (SSD), and

wherein the first device status request and the first device status response comprise a nonvolatile memory express management interface (NVMe-MI) message format.

11 . The method of claim 10 ,

wherein the slave device further comprises a memory cell, and

wherein the method further comprises performing a read operation and a write operation on the memory cell in response to a control of the master device through an in-band channel different from the out-of-band channel.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein a communication speed of an in-band channel is higher than a communication speed of the out-of-band channel.

13 . An electronic device including a memory cell and configured to communicate with an external device through an in-band channel and an out-of-band channel, the electronic device comprising:

a plurality of status sensors configured to generate a plurality of status values;

a status manager storing a plurality of device status records respectively including the plurality of status values; and

a device controller configured to perform a read operation or a write operation on the memory cell in response to a command received through the in-band channel,

wherein the status manager is configured to execute one or more instructions which cause the electronic device to:

based on receiving a first device status request from the external device through the out-of-band channel, output to the external device through the out-of-band channel a first device status response representing that each of the plurality of device status records is normal, and

based on receiving a second device status request from the external device through the out-of-band channel, output to the external device through the out-of-band channel a second device status response which includes one or more of the plurality of device status records and which has a packet capacity larger than the first device status response.

14 . The electronic device of claim 13 , wherein each of the plurality of device status records comprises one of:

hardware telemetry information representing a hardware status of the electronic device;

firmware telemetry information representing a firmware status of the electronic device; and

NAND telemetry information representing a status of a non-volatile memory device included in the electronic device.

15 . The electronic device of claim 13 , wherein the first device status request and the second device status request comprises same operation code.

16 . The electronic device of claim 13 ,

wherein the status manager also stores a plurality of reference ranges and a plurality of status flags respectively corresponding to the plurality of status values, and

wherein the status manager is further configured to execute the one or more instructions which cause the electronic device to:

for each of the plurality of device status records, based on the corresponding status value among the plurality of status values being within a corresponding reference range among the plurality of reference ranges, set a corresponding status flag from among the plurality of status flags to a first value, and

for each of the plurality of device status records, based on the corresponding status value among the plurality of status values not being within the corresponding reference range among the plurality of reference ranges, set the corresponding status flag from among the plurality of status flags to a second value.

17 . The electronic device of claim 16 ,
