Abstract

Disclosed are methods and systems for validating instruments. For instance, a request to generate a cashier's check may be received from an application executing on a drawer's computing device. Request information may be stored within a data storage entry for the check, and a code to be printed on the check may be generated to include at least a portion of the request information. Instructions may be provided to a printing system to cause the check to be printed with the code, where the printed check is invalid. Instructions may be provided to the application and/or printing system to cause display of a prompt to facilitate a reading of the code to validate the check. When information within the code is read by and received from the printing system, the check may be validated, which triggers a transfer of funds from the drawer's account. Otherwise, the check may remain invalid.

1 . A computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving, from a user computing device, a request to generate a document, wherein the document is a printable document capable of use as tender upon a printing and a validation of the document;

generating an entry for the document in a data storage system, the entry indicating a validity status of the document as invalid;

generating a code to be printed on the document for use in the validation, wherein the code includes information associating the code with the entry:

causing a printing system to print the document with the code as an inactive document incapable of use as tender, wherein the document is inactive based on the validity status of the document being invalid in the entry, and remains inactive until the code printed on the document is read to validate the document;

causing one or more of the user computing device or the printing system to display instructions that prompt a reading of the code by the one or more of the user computing device or the printing system to validate the document;

receiving an indication of the code being read by the one or more of the user computing device or the printing system, the indication including the information associating the code with the entry; and

in response to receiving the indication and based on the association, activating the document to an active document capable of use as tender by changing the validity status of the document from invalid to valid in the entry.

2 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

comparing the first authenticating identifier and the second authenticating identifier to determine a match.

4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving first temporal information associated with the request;

receiving second temporal information associated with the reading of the code; and

based on the first temporal information and the second temporal information, determining a time period between the request and the reading of the code is below or equal to a pre-defined threshold time period, wherein the validity status of the document is changed from invalid to valid in response to the receiving the indication and the determining.

5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving first geolocation information associated with the request;

receiving second geolocation information associated with the reading of the code; and

based on the first geolocation information and the second geolocation information, determining a distance between a location of the request and a location of the reading of the code is below or equal to a pre-defined threshold distance, wherein the validity status of the document is changed from invalid to valid in response to the receiving the indication and the determining.

6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

subsequent to changing the validity status of the document from invalid to valid, receiving an invalidation request from the user computing device to invalidate the document; and

responsive to the invalidation request, changing the validity status of the document from valid to invalid.

The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the request includes document information associated with the document, the document information is stored in the entry, and the information associating the code with the entry includes at least a portion of the document information stored in the entry.

8 . The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein changing the validity status of the document comprises:

identifying the entry for the document using the information associating the code with the entry received as part of the indication; and

updating the entry to indicate the document is valid.

9 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein generating the code comprises encrypting the information included within the code, receiving the indication comprises receiving the indication including the encrypted information, and the method further comprises:

decrypting the encrypted information.

10 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the instructions that prompt the reading of the code comprise one or more of:

a request to confirm correct information is included on the document printed by the printing system prior to the reading of the code; or

instructions to position the document relative to the one or more of the user computing device or the printing system to enable the at least one of the user computing device or the printing system to read the code.

11 . A computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving, from a user computing device, a request to generate a document, wherein the document is a printable document only capable of use as tender upon a printing and a validation of the document;

generating an entry for the document in a data storage system, the entry indicating a validity status of the document as invalid;

generating a code to be printed on the document for use in the validation, wherein the code includes information associating the code with the entry;

causing a printing system to print the document with the code as an inactive document incapable of use as tender, wherein the document is inactive based on the validity status of the document being invalid in the entry, and remains inactive until the code printed on the document is read to validate the document;

causing one or more of the user computing device or the printing system to display instructions that prompt a reading of the code by the one or more of the user computing device or the printing system to validate the document;

when an indication of the code being read by the one or more of the user computing device or the printing system is received, the indication including the information associating the code with the entry changing the validity status of the document from invalid to valid in the entry based on the association to activate the document to an active document capable of use as tender; and

when the indication of the code being read by the one or more of the user computing device or the printing system is not received, causing the validity status of the document to remain invalid in the entry such that the document remains the inactive document incapable of use as tender.

12 . The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein when the indication of the code being read is received, the method further comprises:

subsequent to receiving the indication, authenticating a user facilitating the reading of the code.

13 . The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the authenticating comprises authenticating the user via the user computing device, including:

providing a first authenticating identifier for display on the printing system;

causing one or more of the user computing device or the printing system to display a prompt for the user to input the first authenticating identifier displayed on the printing system into the user computing device;

receiving, from the user computing device, a second authenticating identifier input by the user; and

comparing the first authenticating identifier and the second authenticating identifier to determine a match.
