Abstract

Provided is a lithium battery, wherein the battery comprises an anode, a cathode, wherein the cathode comprises one or more transition metals, an electrolyte, and a porous separator interposed between the cathode and anode, wherein the separator comprises an anionic compound. Also provided are methods of manufacturing such batteries.

Claims (13)

1. A lithium-ion battery comprising:

an anode,

a cathode, and

a porous polyolefin separator interposed between the cathode and anode, wherein the porous separator comprises boehmite and a dianionic compound complexed to the separator, wherein the dianionic compound is an anthraquinone disulfonate (AQdiS) or wherein the dianionic compound functions as a photoinitiator.

2. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the dianionic compound contains anionic groups selected from the group consisting of sulfonates, carbonates, and combinations thereof.

3. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the dianionic compound is an anthraquinone disulfonate (AQdiS).

4. The battery of claim 3 , wherein the AQdiS is a sodium salt or a lithium salt.

5. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the dianionic compound is complexed to the separator via a 2%, 5%, 8% or a 10% or greater solution of dianionic compound.

6. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the porous separator is nanoporous.

7. The battery of claim 6 , wherein the average pore size of the separator is less than about 100 nanometers or less than 50 nanometers.

8. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the dianionic compound functions as a photoinitiator.

9. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the dianionic compound is capable of oxidizing lithium metal dendrites.

10. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the dianionic compound complexes with any nickel, manganese, or other transition metal ions that may diffuse into the separator.
