Abstract

A method and a system of abating carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and/or hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) in a geological reservoir. Water is pumped or transferred from a water source to an injection well. The gasses are merged with the water under conditions where the hydraulic pressure of the water is less than the pressure of CO 2 and/or H 2 S gas at the merging point. The water with CO 2 and/or H 2 S gas bubbles is transferred further downwardly at a certain velocity higher than the upward flow velocity of said CO 2 and/or H 2 S gas bubbles ensuring downward movement of gas bubbles resulting in full dissolution of said CO 2 and/or H 2 S in the water due to elevating pressure.

Claims (31)

1 . A system for abating carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and/or hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) in a geological reservoir, wherein the system is configured for:

pumping or otherwise transferring water from a water source to an injection well,

dissolving CO 2 and/or H 2 S gas in the water by:

merging a CO 2 and/or H 2 S rich gas stream with the water at a merging point under conditions where the hydraulic pressure of the water is lower than the partial pressure of the CO 2 and/or H 2 S in the CO 2 and/or H 2 S rich gas stream to create CO2 and H2S bubbles, and

ensuring that the CO 2 and/or H 2 S is kept in solution in the water by transferring the water comprising CO 2 and/or H 2 S downwardly at a velocity, which is higher than the upward velocity of the bubbles of CO 2 and/or H 2 S gas in the water, from the merging point to a depth where the hydraulic pressure of the water has increased to a pressure required for all of said CO 2 and H 2 S gas to be dissolved,

keeping the resulting pH value of said pressurized water stream containing said dissolved CO 2 and or H 2 S between about 2 and 4,

injecting the water comprising the dissolved CO 2 and/or H 2 S into the geological reservoir.

2 . The system according to claim 1 , wherein the system comprises:

an injection well

a merging point for merging water from a water source with a CO 2 and H 2 S rich gas stream,

means for controlling how much CO 2 and/or H 2 S gas is to be dissolved in said water, and

means for controlling a downward velocity of said water within said injection well.

3 . The system according to claim 1 , wherein transferring the water comprising CO 2 and/or H 2 S downwardly at a velocity, which is higher than the upward velocity of the bubbles of CO 2 and/or H 2 S gas in the water comprises transferring the water comprising CO 2 and/or H 2 S downwardly at a velocity, which:

when bubbles of CO 2 and/or H 2 S gas in said merged pressurized stream at the merging point have a diameter below 6 mm, is as a minimum 0.4 m/s or below, and,

when bubbles of CO 2 and/or H 2 S gas in said merged pressurized stream at the merging point have a diameter above 20 mm, is above 0.8 m/s.

4 . The system according to claim 3 , wherein keeping the resulting pH value of said pressurized water stream containing said dissolved CO 2 and or H 2 S between about 2 and 4, is based on how much CO 2 and/or H 2 S gas is dissolved in said water.

5 . The system according to claim 1 , wherein keeping the resulting pH value of said pressurized water stream containing said dissolved CO 2 and or H 2 S between about 2 and 4, is based on how much CO 2 and/or H 2 S gas is dissolved in said water.

6 . A system for abating carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and/or hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) in a geological reservoir, the system comprising:

an injection well,

a merging point for merging water from a water source with a CO 2 and/or H 2 S rich gas stream,

means for controlling how much CO 2 and/or H 2 S gas is to be dissolved in said water,

means for controlling a downward velocity of said water within said injection well,

wherein the system is configured for:

transferring said water from said water source to said injection well,

merging said CO 2 and/or H 2 S rich gas stream with said water at said merging point under conditions where the hydraulic pressure of said water is lower than the partial pressure of the CO 2 and/or H 2 S in said CO 2 and/or H 2 S rich gas stream, to create bubbles of CO 2 and/or H 2 S,

transferring said merged pressurized water and CO 2 and/or H 2 S rich gas stream comprising bubbles of CO 2 and/or H 2 S downwardly at a velocity which:

when bubbles of CO 2 and/or H 2 S gas in said merged pressurized stream at the merging point have a diameter below 6 mm, is as a minimum 0.4 m/s or below, and,

when bubbles of CO 2 and/or H 2 S gas in said merged pressurized stream at the merging point have a diameter above 20 mm, is above 0.8 m/s, and

ensuring downward movement of said merged pressurized water and CO 2 and/or H 2 S rich gas streams comprising bubbles of CO 2 and/or H 2 S from said merging point to a depth where the hydraulic pressure of said water has increased to a pressure required for all of said CO 2 and/or H 2 S to be dissolved,

keeping the resulting pH value of said pressurized water stream containing said dissolved CO2 and or H2S between about 2 and 4, based on how much CO 2 and/or H 2 S gas is dissolved in said water, and

injecting the water comprising the dissolved CO 2 and/or H 2 S into the geological reservoir.
