Abstract

A content editor or a plugin thereto automatically generates authorship tokens that identify content authored by a human author or an artificial author. The authorship tokens are applied to the work while the work is being produced. Thus, subsequent review of the work can identify regions produced by a human author and other regions produced by an artificial intelligence.

Claims (132)

1 . A computer-implemented method for improving word processing software, the method comprising:

providing, via a word processor running on a computing environment, a first user interface element actuatable to cause activation of an authorship tracking feature of the word processor;

based on the authorship tracking feature being activated and automatically during one or more edit sessions where content is being edited using the word processor associated with a computing environment:

receiving, over a keyboard human interface device communicatively coupled to the computing environment, a first edit comprising one or more characters to insert into a first region of the content using the word processor and at a location specified by a first cursor location in the content;

inserting, by the word processor and within the first region of the content at the location specified by the cursor location, human text input entered via the human interface device;

determining that a human rather than an artificial intelligence made the first edit based on the first edit being caused by input received over the keyboard human interface device of the computing environment associated with the word processor;

determining that the first edit satisfies a threshold of significance;

identifying the first region associated with the first edit, the first region being selected from the group consisting of: word level, character level, sentence level, paragraph level, and a file level; and

responsive to determining the first region associated with the first edit satisfies the threshold of significance and responsive to determining that the human made the first edit rather than an artificial intelligence, providing a first authorship token in association with the first region, wherein the first authorship token has a predetermined form indicating that a human rather than an artificial intelligence is the author of the content in the first region;

determining that a human rather than an artificial intelligence made a second edit to a second region of the content at a second cursor location using the word processor;

associating the second region with a second token indicating that the second region has human rather than artificial authorship;

after associating the second region with the second token, detecting activation of a second user interface element;

responsive to detecting the activation of the second user interface element, causing the word processor to activate a generative artificial intelligence function that causes an artificial edit to modify the second region;

determining that the artificial edit is from an artificial source;

responsive to the determining that the artificial edit is from an artificial source, associating the second region with a third authorship token having a form indicating that the second region has mixed human authorship and artificial authorship;

inserting import content into a third region of the content, the import content being from outside of the word processor and inserted into the third region as a result of a paste operation, a drag-and-drop operation, or selection of an import operation from a menu of the word processor;

associating the third region with a fourth authorship token that indicates the third region is associated with external content; and

generating a report showing authorship statistics for the content based at least on the first, third, and fourth authorship tokens, wherein the authorship statistics comprise an indication of a metadata that describes a number of or percentage of characters, words, or other delimitations of content that have certain kinds of authorship,

wherein determining that the first edit satisfies the threshold of significance includes accounting for an output from performing of one or more operations selected from the group consisting of:

determining whether the first edit includes pasting;

determining whether the first edit includes moving the content;

determining an amount of AI or artificial assistance used;

determining a level of sophistication of a word processor feature that was used to produce the first edit;

determining that the edit changes more than a predetermined threshold percentage of characters or words within the first region; and

determining that the edit changes more than a predetermined threshold number of characters or words.

2 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

encrypting the first, third, and fourth authorship tokens.

3 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

making a cryptographic hash signed by a private key, wherein the cryptographic hash is of the first edit or of the first region; or

adding to the first authorship token a string within an exclude list of a generative artificial intelligence associated with the word processor.

4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , storing a representation of the first authorship token in a distributed ledger.

5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the first authorship token includes a portion of a creative work that is a continuation of a prior portion of a creative work part of a prior authorship token.

6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein providing the first authorship token in association with the region includes:

inserting a comment in source code of the content, wherein the comment has the first authorship token, and wherein the comment is inserted at a beginning of the first region, an end of the first region, or between a beginning or end of the first region; and

inserting the first authorship token in a log associated with the first region, wherein the log is a separate file from a file which contains the first region.

7 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

committing a commit based on the content using a version control system that associates the commit with the human user notwithstanding the content having authorship beyond the human user, wherein committed content of the commit includes the first and second authorship tokens.

8 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

parsing a file that contains one or more human authorship tokens;

identifying one or more human regions in the file based on presence of the one or more human authorship tokens in association with the one or more regions; and

identifying one or more other regions in the file lacking one or more human authorship tokens.

9 . The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , further comprising:

providing the one or more human regions to an artificial intelligence for training; and

resisting providing the one or more other regions as to the artificial intelligence for training.

10 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 ,

wherein the first region of the content, prior to the first edit, was associated with a second region artificial authorship token; and

wherein providing the first authorship token in association with the first region includes replacing the first region artificial authorship token with the first authorship token.

11 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

causing the word processor to send a communication to a server or call an application programming interface associated with a server regarding the first edit, the first authorship token, or both the first edit and the first authorship token, wherein the server is a device remote from a device of the text editor and the server is configured to log authorship of contributions to the content.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the content is prose or narrative text content that has authorship of the content tracked in a separate file or in another area beyond plain text of the content.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the first edit satisfies a threshold of significance includes determining that a meaning of the content in the first region is changed in response to the first edit.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first authorship token includes data describing authorship of the first region, the first authorship token being at least one of signed or encrypted and stored in a location or format that is not readily directly editable by the user of the word processor.

15 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a third edit to the content;

using one or more sensors to determine whether the third edit is characteristic of a manual edit or an artificial edit,

wherein the one or more sensors are configured to detect a movement characteristic of a human manually entering input or a biometric data characteristic of a human manually entering input.

16 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

responsive to detecting activation of a user interface element, exporting the content in a manner that preserves authorship tokens.

17 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing a file comprising the content using a markup language, wherein the file includes one or more dedicated tags for distinguishing a portion of the content of the file based on authorship.

18 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising: performing three or more operations selected from the operation group consisting of:

resisting mimicry of the first authorship token;

resisting direct modification of the first authorship token by the user;

providing, updating, or preserving a second authorship token in association with a second region based on the edit to the first region;

resisting providing any authorship token in association with a third region that is a lower-level region within the first region;

removing all authorship tokens in association with lower-level regions within the first region;

adding the first authorship token to a second file separate from a first file containing the content;

sending a communication to a server regarding either or both of the edit and the first authorship token;

calling an application programming interface associated with a server or another program based on one or both of the edit and the first authorship token;

hiding the first authorship token from the user of the content editor;

hiding the first authorship token from a viewer of the content;

automatically collapsing the first authorship token;

collapsing a representation of the first authorship token;

expanding a collapsed representation of the first authorship token responsive to an expanding user having sufficient permission to do so;

obfuscating underlying aspects of the first authorship token;

storing the first authorship token in a location or format that is not readily accessible to the user of the content editor;

removing a prior authorship token from association with the first region;

storing, on a blockchain, a node based on the authorship token and the first region;

indicating, with the first authorship token, authorship of sub-regions of the first region; and

indicating, with the first authorship token, that all regions until a closing authorship token have the same authorship.

19 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having computer-executable instructions thereon which, when executed by a computing system, perform a method for improving word processing software, the method comprising:

providing, via a word processor running on a computing environment, a first user interface element actuatable to cause activation of an authorship tracking feature of the word processor;

based on the authorship tracking feature being activated and automatically during one or more edit sessions where content is being edited using the word processor associated with a computing environment:

receiving, over a keyboard human interface device communicatively coupled to the computing environment, a first edit comprising one or more characters to insert into a first region of the content using the word processor and at a location specified by a first cursor location in the content;

inserting, by the word processor and within the first region of the content at the location specified by the cursor location, human text input entered via the human interface device;

determining that a human rather than an artificial intelligence made the first edit based on the first edit being caused by input received over the keyboard human interface device of the computing environment associated with the word processor;

determining that the first edit satisfies a threshold of significance;

identifying the first region associated with the first edit, the first region being selected from the group consisting of: word level, character level, sentence level, paragraph level, and a file level; and

responsive to determining the first region associated with the first edit satisfies the threshold of significance and responsive to determining that the human made the first edit rather than an artificial intelligence, providing a first authorship token in association with the first region, wherein the first authorship token has a predetermined form indicating that a human rather than an artificial intelligence is the author of the content in the first region;

determining that a human rather than an artificial intelligence made a second edit to a second region of the content at a second cursor location using the word processor;

associating the second region with a second token indicating that the second region has human rather than artificial authorship;

after associating the second region with the second token, detecting activation of a second user interface element;

responsive to detecting the activation of the second user interface element, causing the word processor to activate a generative artificial intelligence function that causes an artificial edit to modify the second region;

determining that the artificial edit is from an artificial source;

responsive to the determining that the artificial edit is from an artificial source, associating the second region with a third authorship token having a form indicating that the second region has mixed human authorship and artificial authorship;

inserting import content into a third region of the content, the import content being from outside of the word processor and inserted into the third region as a result of a paste operation, a drag-and-drop operation, or selection of an import operation from a menu of the word processor;

associating the third region with a fourth authorship token that indicates the third region is associated with external content; and

generating a report showing authorship statistics for the content based at least on the first, third, and fourth authorship tokens, wherein the authorship statistics comprise an indication of a metadata that describes a number of or percentage of characters, words, or other delimitations of content that have certain kinds of authorship,

wherein determining that the first edit satisfies the threshold of significance includes accounting for an output from performing of one or more operations selected from the group consisting of:

determining whether the first edit includes pasting;

determining whether the first edit includes moving the content;

determining an amount of AI or artificial assistance used;

determining a level of sophistication of a word processor feature that was used to produce the first edit;

determining that the edit changes more than a predetermined threshold percentage of characters or words within the first region; and

determining that the edit changes more than a predetermined threshold number of characters or words.

20 . A computing system comprising:

a processor;

a non-transitory memory communicatively connected to the processor and storing instructions which, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to:

provide, via a word processor running on a computing environment, a first user interface element actuatable to cause activation of an authorship tracking feature of the word processor;

based on the authorship tracking feature being activated and automatically during one or more edit sessions where content is being edited using the word processor associated with a computing environment:

receive, over a keyboard human interface device communicatively coupled to the computing environment, a first edit comprising one or more characters to insert into a first region of the content using the word processor and at a location specified by a first cursor location in the content;

insert, by the word processor and within the first region of the content at the location specified by the cursor location, human text input entered via the human interface device;

determine that a human rather than an artificial intelligence made the first edit based on the first edit being caused by input received over the keyboard human interface device of the computing environment associated with the word processor;

determine that the first edit satisfies a threshold of significance;

identify the first region associated with the first edit, the first region being selected from the group consisting of: word level, character level, sentence level, paragraph level, and a file level; and

responsive to determining the first region associated with the first edit satisfies the threshold of significance and responsive to determining that the human made the first edit rather than an artificial intelligence, provide a first authorship token in association with the first region, wherein the first authorship token has a predetermined form indicating that a human rather than an artificial intelligence is the author of the content in the first region;

determine that a human rather than an artificial intelligence made a second edit to a second region of the content at a second cursor location using the word processor;

associate the second region with a second token indicating that the second region has human rather than artificial authorship;

after associating the second region with the second token, detect activation of a second user interface element;

responsive to detecting the activation of the second user interface element, cause the word processor to activate a generative artificial intelligence function that causes an artificial edit to modify the second region;

determine that the artificial edit is from an artificial source;

responsive to the determining that the artificial edit is from an artificial source, associate the second region with a third authorship token having a form indicating that the second region has mixed human authorship and artificial authorship;

insert import content into a third region of the content, the import content being from outside of the word processor and inserted into the third region as a result of a paste operation, a drag-and-drop operation, or selection of an import operation from a menu of the word processor;

associate the third region with a fourth authorship token that indicates the third region is associated with external content; and

generate a report showing authorship statistics for the content based at least on the first, third, and fourth authorship tokens, wherein the authorship statistics comprise an indication of a metadata that describes a number of or percentage of characters, words, or other delimitations of content that have certain kinds of authorship,

wherein determining that the first edit satisfies the threshold of significance includes accounting for an output from performing of one or more operations selected from the group consisting of:

determining whether the first edit includes pasting;

determining whether the first edit includes moving the content;

determining an amount of AI or artificial assistance used;

determining a level of sophistication of a word processor feature that was used to produce the first edit;

determining that the edit changes more than a predetermined threshold percentage of characters or words within the first region; and

determining that the edit changes more than a predetermined threshold number of characters or words.
