Abstract

An electric motor includes a stator body that defines a rotor bore and a plurality of stator fluid channels; a plurality of electrically conductive windings forming a plurality of first winding loops extending axially outward from a first axial end of the stator body; and a generally annular body, unitarily formed from a thermally conductive and electrically insulating material, that surrounds the plurality of first winding loops and couples to the first axial end of the stator body, such that the generally annular body includes a plurality of first pins, attached to the generally annular body at a distal end of the plurality of first pins; and the plurality of first pins are configured to receive fluid from a cooling system.

Claims (33)

1 . An electric motor comprising:

a stator body that defines a rotor bore and a plurality of stator fluid channels;

a plurality of electrically conductive windings forming a plurality of first winding loops extending axially outward from a first axial end of the stator body; and

a generally annular body, unitarily formed from a thermally conductive and electrically insulating material, that surrounds the plurality of first winding loops and couples to the first axial end of the stator body, wherein

the generally annular body includes a plurality of first pins, attached to the generally annular body at a distal end of the plurality of first pins, and the plurality of first pins are configured to receive fluid from a cooling system.

2 . The electric motor recited in claim 1 , wherein the generally annular body comprises injection molded plastic.

3 . The electric motor recited in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of first pins extend radially outward from the generally annular body.

4 . The electric motor recited in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of first pins receive fluid from the cooling system prior to flowing into the plurality of stator fluid channels.

5 . The electric motor recited in claim 1 , wherein the generally annular body comprises a first inner wall, a first outer wall, and a first end wall.

6 . The electric motor recited in claim 5 , further comprising a first shroud.

7 . An electric motor comprising:

a stator body that defines a rotor bore and a plurality of stator fluid channels;

a plurality of electrically conductive windings forming a plurality of first winding loops having a first portion that is proximate the stator and a second portion that extends radially outwardly from the first portion;

a generally annular body, unitarily formed from a thermally conductive and electrically insulating material, that surrounds the plurality of first winding loops and couples to the first axial end of the stator body, wherein

the generally annular body includes a pair of first end walls, the pair of first end walls including a plurality of first pins or fins, the plurality of first pins or fins are configured to receive fluid from a cooling system.

8 . The electric motor recited in claim 7 , wherein the generally annular body comprises injection molded plastic.

9 . The electric motor recited in claim 7 , wherein the plurality of first pins extend radially outward from the generally annular body.

10 . The electric motor recited in claim 7 , wherein the plurality of first pins receive fluid from the cooling system prior to flowing into the plurality of stator fluid channels.

11 . The electric motor recited in claim 7 , wherein the generally annular body comprises a first inner wall, a first outer wall, and a first end wall.

12 . The electric motor recited in claim 11 , further comprising a first shroud.

13 . An electric motor comprising:

a stator body that defines a rotor bore and a plurality of stator fluid channels;

a plurality of electrically conductive windings forming a plurality of first winding loops extending axially outward from a first axial end of the stator body;

a first generally annular body, unitarily formed from a thermally conductive and electrically insulating material, that surrounds the plurality of first winding loops and couples to the first axial end of the stator body, wherein

the first generally annular body includes a plurality of first pins, attached to the first generally annular body at a distal end of the plurality of first pins; and the plurality of first pins are configured to receive fluid from a cooling system;

a plurality of electrically conductive windings forming a plurality of second winding loops extending axially outward from a second axial end of the stator body; and

a second generally annular body, unitarily formed from a thermally conductive and electrically insulating material, that surrounds the plurality of second winding loops and couples to the second axial end of the stator body, wherein

the second generally annular body includes a plurality of second pins, attached to the second generally annular body at a distal end of the plurality of second pins; and the plurality of second pins are configured to receive fluid from the cooling system.

14 . The electric motor recited in claim 13 , wherein the first generally annular body and second generally annular body comprise injection molded plastic.

15 . The electric motor recited in claim 13 , wherein the plurality of first pins extend radially outward from the first generally annular body and the plurality of second pins extend radially outward from the second generally annular body.

16 . The electric motor recited in claim 13 , wherein the plurality of first pins receive fluid from the cooling system prior to flowing into the plurality of stator fluid channels.

17 . The electric motor recited in claim 13 , wherein the first generally annular body comprises a first inner wall, a first outer wall, and a first end wall.

18 . The electric motor recited in claim 13 , wherein the second generally annular body comprises a second inner wall, a second outer wall, and a second end wall.
