Abstract

The present invention is a composition intended for consumption by animals containing antimicrobials and anti-inflammatory agents, which may include ovotransferrin, chitosan, and curcumin . The composition may be provided as powder that is mixed into feeds, may be incorporated into pellets, or may be delivered through water, among other methods of dosage. The invention is intended as a health supplement for increased gain and improved general health in production animals affected by enteric diseases such as coccidiosis and as a general health supplement in humans and companion animals facing enteric diseases to maintain the gut microbiome.

21 . An oral ingestible composition comprising an iron-binding glycoprotein and chitosan.

22 . The composition of claim 21 , wherein the oral ingestible composition is in the form of a dough, a paste, a gel, a powder, a liquid, and a tablet.

23 . The composition of claim 21 , wherein the oral ingestible composition is in the form of a dough.

24 . The composition of claim 21 , wherein the oral ingestible composition is in the form of a gel.

25 . The composition of claim 21 , wherein:

the iron-binding glycoprotein is present in the oral ingestible composition in an amount of at least 0.01% by weight of the oral ingestible composition and up to 2% by weight of the oral ingestible composition; and

the chitosan is present in the oral ingestible composition in an amount of at least 0.05% by weight of the oral ingestible composition and up to 8% by weight of the oral ingestible composition.

26 . The composition of claim 21 , wherein:

the iron-binding glycoprotein is present in the oral ingestible composition in an amount of at least 0.05% by weight of the oral ingestible composition and up to 1% by weight of the oral ingestible composition; and

chitosan, wherein the chitosan is present in the oral ingestible composition in an amount of at least 0.1% by weight of the oral ingestible composition and up to 4% by weight of the oral ingestible composition.

27 . The composition of claim 21 , wherein:

the iron-binding glycoprotein is present in the oral ingestible composition in an amount of at least 0.05% by weight of the oral ingestible composition and up to 0.5% by weight of the oral ingestible composition; and

chitosan, wherein the chitosan is present in the oral ingestible composition in an amount of at least 0.1% by weight of the oral ingestible composition and up to 2% by weight of the oral ingestible composition.

28 . The composition of claim 21 , wherein the iron-binding glycoprotein and the chitosan are present in the oral ingestible composition in a weight ratio of from about 1:1 (iron-binding glycoprotein:chitosan) to about 2:7 (iron-binding glycoprotein:chitosan).

29 . The composition of claim 21 , wherein the iron-binding glycoprotein is ovotransferrin.

30 . The composition of claim 21 , wherein the chitosan is present in the oral ingestible composition in the form of particles consisting of chitosan polysaccharide.

31 . The composition of claim 21 , wherein the iron-binding glycoprotein and the chitosan are mixed throughout the oral ingestible composition.

32 . The composition of claim 21 , further comprising an anti-inflammatory agent.

33 . The composition of claim 21 , further comprising a phytobotanical anti-inflammatory agent.

34 . The composition of claim 21 , wherein the oral ingestible composition further comprises a phytobotanical anti-inflammatory agent selected from the group consisting of curcumin , garlic, cinnamon, ginger, Roman chamomile, Echinacea , red clover, goldenseal, vitex (chaste tree), black pepper, and clove.

35 . The composition of claim 21 , wherein the composition is produced by:

combining the iron-binding glycoprotein, the chitosan, and one or more additional ingredients of the oral ingestible composition, wherein, prior to the combining, the iron-binding glycoprotein and the chitosan are each present in a dry powder form; and

mixing the combined the iron-binding glycoprotein, the chitosan, and the one or more additional ingredients to thereby obtain the oral ingestible composition.

36 . The composition of claim 35 , wherein the dry powder form of the chitosan comprises particles consisting of chitosan polysaccharide.

37 . The composition of claim 21 , wherein:

the oral ingestible composition is in the form of a dough or gel;

the iron-binding glycoprotein is present in the oral ingestible composition in an amount of at least 0.05% by weight of the oral ingestible composition and up to 0.5% by weight of the oral ingestible composition;

chitosan, wherein the chitosan is present in the oral ingestible composition in an amount of at least 0.1% by weight of the oral ingestible composition and up to 2% by weight of the oral ingestible composition;

the iron-binding glycoprotein is ovotransferrin;

the chitosan is present in the oral ingestible composition in the form of particles consisting of chitosan polysaccharide;

the iron-binding glycoprotein and the chitosan are mixed throughout the oral ingestible composition.

38 . The composition of claim 37 , wherein the oral ingestible composition further comprises curcumin.

39 . The composition of claim 37 , wherein the composition is produced by:

combining the iron-binding glycoprotein, the chitosan, and one or more additional ingredients of the oral ingestible composition, wherein, prior to the combining, the iron-binding glycoprotein and the chitosan are each present in a dry powder form, wherein the dry powder form of the chitosan comprises particles consisting of chitosan polysaccharide; and

mixing the combined the iron-binding glycoprotein, the chitosan, and the one or more additional ingredients to thereby obtain the oral ingestible composition.

40 . The composition of claim 39 , wherein the one or more additional ingredients comprises one or more of a bulking agent and curcumin.
